1. A long time ago I was at an Art Farmer gig in a small club in Brussels, when in walked a few of the Count Basie Band. They had just played a gig at the Palais Des Beaux Arts. After Jo Jones, the Basie drummer, had finished with him, the Belgian bass player had blood running from his fingers and a smile a mile wide. If you ever gig at Kenny Jones's Polo club he might ask if he can sit in. He's good and still does a mean shuffle.
2. "Knuckle draggers" might be a little harsh on some, maybe not on others, but saying, "They (Janek etc) bought it on themselves", isn't good enough. When people are baited and goaded it is unnecessary and looks bad on Basschat. From Janek, through Guy Pratt and Vail Johnson down to JTUK. At the end of the day the whole forum looses. It is unpleasant to experience and unpleasant to watch. The Mods should crack down, but they don't. It is what it is, but more respect is needed for different ideas, approaches and opinions.
3. So a handmade bass should be the same price as a production line bass because the shape is vaguely similar? A Bentley is basically the same as a Skoda so why is there such a price difference?
4.
But he is up his own arse...
What a great advert for Basschat.
5. When Love Comes To Town with Johnny Lang, Joss Stone and the fantastic Reggie McBride on bass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eo7AcIdMnHY
6. He used to post here. . . until the knuckle draggers chased him away.
7. I'd check outboard pre amps first. The Sadowsky and Aguilar Tonehammer would be worth checking.
8. Really? These basses are regularly using shims? I wonder how you know that?
9. Less space than a 410 and able to take over volume and tone-wise? I would imagine that rules out most single 210's. I'd look at a good 212 or if the budget can cover it a couple of very good 112's.
10. I know several players using Skoda Yeti's. A ton of room in them.
11. Years ago Clapton used to play unannounced gigs at Scratchers in Godalming. Gary Moore would play the occasional gig with Papa George. Ronnie Wood can turn up anywhere from the 100 Club to the Eel Pie in Twickenham.
12. Bergs and Barefaced are some of the best cabs ever made. If you're short list is between these you're in the right ball park. At this level there is little difference in quality, ability or design. Bergs and BF will have differences in look and sound so any preferences are purely down to personal taste. I used Berg's for 8 years. In that time I had 7 cabs, AE and CN 12's and 10's, and I would recommend them to anyone. I moved from Bergs to Barefaced cabs (I now have 3 of them) and couldn't be happier with the tone, volume and weight. One difference, I now run 2 Super Compacts to get the same volume I used to get from 3 112 Bergs, so I don't need my 2 ohm amps any more.
13. I'd say the Aguilar GS212 would be a good choice within your budget. But an even better choice would be the 2 Barefaced Super Compacts for sale. I'd suggest to your Dad he sell his gear and go halves with you. Then you can both use one cab and put 2 together for any really loud gigs that come up.
14. Volvo estate. I've carried me and my gear, the wife and the drummer and full kit with only half the back seat down.
15. I made a great sound through 2 Berg AE112's and 2 AE210's when I had my Staccato but now the Super Compact is on the market I'd go with 2 of those.
16. You don't need volume in the studio, so, if the tone is good, it should be fine as it is. Try it and see.
17. Go along to Bernie Goodfellow in Brighton. I'd get the frets checked out as well. If they need levelling no amount of set up is going to work.
18. Fantastic bass playing. . . . and isn't that an Overwater he's playing? Edit Listening to this for a second time, I could do with less of that shouty woman at the front and more bass.
19. How old is it, what is the weight and where are you?
20.
I remember being 20 in the mid 90s when pub gigs and drinking was at its height.
Ahh. . . youth! You should have been there in the 60's, 70's and 80's. More gigs, girls and beer than was humanly possible to fit in. But we gave it our best shot.
21.
I would, my first two cars were Morris Travellers.
My first car was a Morris Traveller. The Marshall 412 and 100 watt amp were a perfect fit in the back.
22. I just use standard tuning with a B string. I play across the fret board and mostly below the 9th fret so easier access to high notes isn't a priority for me.
23. I used to play through 2 2x10's. Easier on my back.
