1.
But surely this must be the definitive live version:
Why? It's very good but so was the 94 video (with that note!), as was the stunning version Dave Gilmour played at the Albert Hall last year.
2. At last. . . a McCartney bass sound that I like.
3.
Of course Wal now have me flying the flag for the marque and all the prestige that bestows...
They paid me a fortune to stop playing their basses.
4. Apparently Van Morrison signed away most of his early songs and gets virtually nothing if they are used in films etc. He's been re recording most of the popular ones so that when asked if his stuff can be used he makes them use the newly recorded versions. That way he gets some money out of the use of his songs. There were some very clever copies done in the past, when bands hadn't woken up to the revenue potential of their songs. This version Levi's recorded of Heard It Through The Grapevine is a classic in its own right. https://www.youtube....h?v=wT4DR_ae_4o edit - spelling!
5. Good for them. At least the artists and writers are making some money from their work.
6.
Ah, don't assume that the artist knows how it's supposed to go Seriously - the recorded performance may have been improvised, yet gone on to be definitive in the eyes (and ears) of the audience, so that's 'how it goes'.
I think that sums up Maggie May. A bottle of brandy later and that's how every bass player is supposed to play it, cock ups and all!
7. When I needed a low volume rig I looked at all the combo's. The AER Bass combo's are the only ones I thought came close but the price was way to high for me. I settled for a Berg AE112 and my regular amp. Small, light and maintaining a high quality of tone at a reasonable price. These days, for tone and volume and smallest footprint, I'd also be seriously looking at the smaller Barefaced cabs.
8. I'm biased. I've been using a TH500 for a couple of years. I liked it so much I bought another as a backup. The TH500 apparently uses the same power module as other 900 watt rated amps. Don't be distracted by it's lower rating. This is a loud amp. So I'd get the TH500 and start saving up for some Bergantino or Barefaced cabs to go with it.
9. In a band a long time ago, we had a keyboard player (usually a great player) who had worked out the run down to Living For The City.. . . . and it was wrong. It sounded very bad against the bass line (which was right) and the band were very fed up with me when I refused to change the bass part to fit with the keys. Apparently I was being unreasonable by insisting that the key board player played the right line!!! Know when to make a stand and when it's not worth it. The joys of being in a band.
10.
It's just during the chorus. 1:38 on here.
Sounds perfect.
11. Leo Fender didn't personally make any basses. He always had a team of people doing all that, while he sifted through the ideas and ran the company.
12. I don't know what you're all listening to, but I'm listening to Guy Pratt playing a 5 string status with Pink Floyd in 1994. Sounds like perfect 5 string bass playing to me.
13. Sometimes you can forget what you've got and how good it sounds. I've been trying out different amp, cab and bass combinations lately and went back to my TH500 for last nights gig. It's a great sounding amp that hits the spot for my ideal bass sound. One of the best sounding amps of the last 10 years.
14. A lovely guy and playing chops that are off the scale. I saw him at GAK effortlessly playing and chatting to a full house. He's just a regular guy and. . . . he makes mistakes too, but by the time he's played out of them you can't be sure if it was a mistake at all.
15. Playing bum notes is never fine and playing the wrong notes, which you thought were the right notes, isn't good either. One thing I find guitarists do a lot is to play a song wrong because they were too lazy to listen to it and work out the parts. Interpreting a song is fine, if that's what you are doing, but I don't like lazy short cuts. There are cover bands that just approximate a song, which is OK, and those who play them straight. We have a new drummer in our cover band who is very good, but annoys the hell out of me because he doesn't see why changing the rhythm of a song is a problem! I think he's just being lazy and doesn't want to learn the arrangements, or maybe it's ADD.
16. Has it got the "Noiseless" pickups? If yours is the same problem, here are a lot of complaints about noisy noiseless pickups on Talkbass. Maybe another foot/shot moment from Fender? They all seem to be very happy after they've changed their pickups. You can try Charlie Chandler's Guitar Experience at Hampton Wick and Chandler Guitars in Kew, or the Bass Gallery in Camden.
17. The budget was big enough to make everyone happy. Seems like some of them got on top of it and some didn't. 12 years is a long time. I guess how good you are depends on what you've been doing in the meantime. Typically the bass player turned up knowing the parts. Go girl.
18. There's a Clapton Live at the NEC video where the cock-up is so big they put a speech bubble over his hear with "Oops" in it. Everyone makes mistakes. The better the player the fewer mistakes you'll hear but they're always there. Even classically trained musicians won't get it right every time.
19. So, how low and are there 1 or 2 notes on 1 or 2 strings that are buzzing or all of them? There are several side issues that could be affecting the action on your bass, like nut height, but if you want to go very low then you're into uneven fret territory, and fret levelling is the first thing to check and fix. Everything else flows from that. A couple of years ago I had my US Lakland set up with a fret levelling. It played like a million dollars afterwards. I cost me about £80. Worth every penny.
20. Vintage Trouble might have some numbers that would fit. . . . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fbMmrDItSg
21. It was Bowie's band, although they hadn't played together for 12 years I thought they were fantastic. I'm not sure what purpose Lorde served. The weak link IMO.
22. Check out The Groundhogs. Another UK blues band not getting enough praise these days. They moved into heavier and even prog rock territory. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9aS6asrurQ
23. The Mesa Boogie D800 and several of the TC amps will go to 2 ohms.
24. You have to be practical. If this guy's on the skids it's nothing to do with you, but if you don't replace him someone else will, so it might as well be you. I've been playing with my current covers band (through various changes) for nearly 10 years. Sometimes it's been my main band and sometimes it's been the diary filler, but if it's done properly a good cover band is worth playing in. IMO Mustang Sally is a great number if you can play it like the Wilson Pickett version (Tommy Cogbill on bass).
