1. I put all my D class amps in one of those foam filled aluminium camera type cases, from Maplins.
2. Adding speakers for extra volume should always be the first option, and a massive added benefit is the improvement in your tone when you have more cones working for you. That's why it makes no sense to paint yourself into a corner with small 4 ohm cabs. I used to run 1, 2 or 3 Bergantino AE112 cabs, depending on the gigs. Same tone but adjusted to the volume of the band. Then I moved to a CN212 with an additional AE112. These days I'm using 1 or 2 BF Super Compacts. I'm happy to say that 2 SC's are easily matching the volume I got with the 3 x 12 rigs. I've got 2 2ohm amps so I wouldn't rule out 3 SC's in the future.
3.
So now you know why a 100 watt Marshall bass head and 2 4x12 100 watt cabinets (containing drivers with virtually no xmax) could blow your socks off in the old days.
100watt Marshall's were originally sold with 50 watt 412 cabs. That's 12 1/2 watts per speaker!! We live in another (so much better) world these days.
4. The mat will stop the amp moving on top of the cab but it won't stop the vibrations shaking it about. Since I had my Mesa Boogie 400+ (16 ish valves!) I've put my amps on foam blocks. I made mine from the packing foam which used to be used in PC boxes. These stop the amp moving and protects it from being shaken to bits. The other thing I'd be concerned about is those vibrations are the cab sucking the life out of your sound. My experience is that cabs are always made to be as rigid as possible, so the vibrations don't wast your tone. I don't understand why your cab is vibrating as much as it is.
5. Epifani cabs have a lot of low end, at least the 410 did. I improved my sound by moving up to Bergantino cabs. Have a look at the CN210 and CN212 cabs. I'd also checkout Barefaced cabs. You'll cut right through the mix with one of those.
6. If you are playing so loud you can get by with the midget you have no hope of breaking the BB.
7. Speed and being "fast" is about technique. The thinner neck is easier to play so you don't have to move or stretch your fingers as much so it "feels" better. In the end the Musicman will feel just as fast.
8.
Who posted that? Can't see it
In this http://www.recording...Detail/134.html
9. If you think a 5 string bass can't be recorded successfully or well, you'd better tell Nathan East. Or maybe you should get a better engineer. In terms of quality of sound both Duck Dunn and James Jamerson's sound when recording was terrible. If that matters it's only to a small number of engineers who care more about sound than they do about playing.
10. Just bought an amp off Greg. Very good sale. Many Thanks
11. A TH500 is a great amp, I've used mine for 2 years and it fits in really well with my Precision and Stax style bass thumping. The TH350 is just as good in a smaller package. Based on the tracks you keep posting I'd imagine you would do better with a more modern sounding amp, a Genz STL or maybe GK?
12.
Clearly your tuners are 1:1 ratio
I don't think I wrote that right. . . I meant 2 or 3 winds of string around the peg.
13. On my MM SR5 I had Dunlops and a 3 inch wide leather strap. If you can find them. . . Allparts strap locks are re badged Dunlops, at half the price.
14. My Lull PJ5 weighs in at 81/2 lbs. That'll be a pretty light 5er but also on the light side for some 4 string basses. Bass Direct currently has an MTD Kingston 5 string at 7lbs 10oz.
15. Do you ever get down to London? You can have a listen to my CN212 and Aguilar TH500.
16. Most bass strings only need 2 or 3 winds. Is that really enough to justify a winder?
17.
I'm looking for a compact stand that I can use at gigs, something that doesn't take up much floor space and folds up pretty small. I have a Hercules hanger stand which is great, but it's quite big and doesn't fold up very small.
I use the Hercules hanger. If I'm on a stage where there isn't room for that I'll put the bass in the gig bag between sets. I reckon leaving the bass out in anywhere that small is going to get it damaged pretty quickly.
18. Used to see them at the Marquee. Steve Ferrone was (still is) fantastic drummer but Robbie McIntosh was so much better. One of the best drummers I've ever seen. I don't know how he did it because he could hardly stand up!
19. There are no upsides or downsides. . . . only preferences and choices. Try several. If you like one. . . . get it.
20.
You're not playing loud enough then
My thoughts too. . . .
21. Do you have 2 212's for show or do you actually use so much volume that you need a 412 rig? You're talking about halving the number of speakers and your cone area. If you try to compensate and run these cabs at the top of their range then you'll risk over driving the cones which probably won't sound too good or last too long. I used to run 3 112's for very loud gigs, but I've never needed 412's for any band.
22. I know a guy who has a lego bass. It has a metal rod in the neck and the pieces are glued together. Basses can be made of almost anything. On this one they strengthened the cardboard with various resins and glues so it is now stronger than wood.
23.
Not owned by the same people apparently.
Used to be, but Doug and Charlie are no longer connected to the Kew shop. I believe they still have an excellent repair dept.
