1. Get a set list and start working your way through Youtube. It'll be mostly 2 to the bar and Root and 5. Then maybe a few choice passing notes.
2.
It's in France so who knows but in the UK it's illegal, actually fraud.
I suppose he could be topping up what ever is in the jug to make what he's agreed to pay the band. Which I guess isn't fraud. Barristers make a very good living splitting these hairs. IMO the band is only getting ripped off if they end up being paid less than they were lead to believe they would get. Like my band gigging in a Paris club for a percentage of the bar takings. We only found out at the end that it didn't include credit card sales, which were a very large part of the evenings take.
3.
All those names from the past ...
Bass_Ferret!!! I never got on with that guy. Mr "blinkered opinion"; always telling people their gear didn't sound good because it didn't exactly fit the rule book, and he could argue for England. The only person I've put on the exclude list.
4. Obviously it's not illegal to send the pot around or for the pub to say "it's for the band", and then keep it. We've had that happen in the past. Currently all the gigs that put the jug around give us the money. There are no "rules", so there is nothing you can do except cross the gig off your list. If it's a good gig I'd still do it.
5. Beefy had good days and bad days. It was his inability to work out which was which that lead to his downfall. I miss him. He was fun when he was on form.
6. If you're worried about buying a crap bass on the net. . . . make it a rule to only buy a bass that you can inspect and play before you part with your money.
7. Proper grown up music. Freddie and Keith, what a rhythm section.
8.
the noise of people talking drowns out the 'music'
Not when we're playing!!
9. Depending on the model, Hipshot lightweight tuners weigh in from between 44g and 57g. http://www.hipshotproducts.com/files/all/ulite_weights.pdf
10. As long as it's a 3 tone sunburst with rosewood fretboard and tort pickguard I don't mind what kind of P bass it is. For the rest, black boxes will do nicely.
11. OK. Thanks for the info. If I'm that inaccurate I'll delete the post.
12.
alot of guys tell me that TC power outputs are still very misleading?
That started on Talkbass and unfortunately got taken up over here. The misleading bit is when people quote the power module rating like it means anything. TC use power modules that are lower power and boost the signal. The RH750 for instance is as loud as any 750 watt amp. If you like the tone they are as loud as they say.
13.
Hmmm, I found myself thinking: - Yes, that great. What happens now, then?
The groove wasn't enough?
14. I don't know any drummer who doesn't like a loud bass, but . . . . I'd have moved the cab forward so that it was firing just past him. I regularly have to deal with small stages and my days of just accepting that the guitarist and vocalist have all the room and I have to squash into a shoe box space are long gone. If I need to move everyone around so that everyone gets a good sound then that's what I make them do.
15. If anyone had ripped of Led Zep then Peter Grant and the "boys" would have sorted that out at the time. You can bet LZ management will be right on top of the pennies.
16. These things only go to court if the guys being sued say up yours and think they can bluff it out. Intros and arrangements are not covered by copyright so can be used at will, as Andy Summers found out. . . . . 17. I wouldn't blame greedy estates. I'd blame lazy songwriters. Apparently Led Zeppelin had a policy of taking songs and changing just enough so they didn't get sued. I read that Page was rather pissed of with Plant because he didn't change the lyrics enough. You can get cases years later because a recent court case ruling might have made success more likely.
18. I use both of mine. Even though I don't need 2 for the volume on most gigs, and while 1 sounds great, I still think I get a better sound using 2 SC's. I only take one cab on very low volume gigs.
19. I liked that. Never mind the bass, I'm really going to have to put more "life" and "bounce" into my playing.
20. How small and light do you want to go? There are 2 Bergantino AE112's in the classifieds. They are fantastic sounding light weight cabs. I'd also checkout an Aguilar amp (TH350 or TH500) and 2 Barefaced One10 cabs. You can't get smaller or lighter. I like the TH500 so much I bought another as a backup and I know a keyboard player who uses a BF One10 to handle the bottom end in his Hammond/piano rig, in a loud rock blues band. I'm a BF fan and I was pretty sceptical about the One10 until I heard that keyboard rig.
21. If all your basses have the flush type of straplocks then it makes sense for you to have them all the same. That none of mine are is the reason I'd never buy a bass with flush straplocks fitted.
22.
My main point is that there seems to be a general opinion on Basschat that a good drummer is a quiet drummer, and that is not the case…
A good drummer is on who uses his ears and understands that he is playing in a band.
23.
The proper way to mix for any venue is to get the vocals clear and distinct to the majority of the listeners. Then add the other instruments.
I agree, totally. I don't often end up in that situation but it is the right way to do things.
It's nonsense to regulate the band volume to the kit. Drummers who can't regulate their volume to appropriate levels need drum lessons. I won't play with any 'self taught' drummers anymore.
Totally, totally agree. If a drummer can't adjust his volume then he's usually not worth playing with.
24. How much did it cost new? How much did you pay for it? Is it in the same condition as when you bought it? How long have you had it? How old is it? How popular are these basses? How much do similar basses go for in the used market place? Do you want to trade? Up or down? I don't care about the state of the strings, but I'd expect a bag or case in the price. When I buy a bass I don't care if it's been upgraded. As far as I'm concerned mods are money down the drain. I'm unlikely to want to be paying for someone else's fiddling about. I'm also very unlikely to buy a bass that's been modded anyway, but that's just me. PS To anyone putting an ad together, remember to tell everyone where you live and how much the thing weighs.
