1. If your technique is correct small hands won't be an issue when playing bass and having small hands doesn't require a thin neck or short scale bass. Esperanza Spalding can play an upright bass with no effort. Checkout how she plays upright and electric basses. How you hold the bass and how high you play the bass makes reaching the strings easier or harder. If you can't reach the lowest string without stretching or feeling uncomfortable hold the neck at a higher angle until you can. Some people play with a sharp angle to their wrists. I find it's more comfortable and easier to play if the wrists are straighter. Whether you use 1,2,3,4 (1 finger per fret) fingering or 1,2,4 depends on where you are on the neck and what the next note is. Generally use 1,2,3,4 higher up the neck, above the 10th fret, for instance, but I'd always, always use 1,2,4 fingering below. Don't stretch (ever), so don't fix your thumb to any spot on the back of the neck. Always move your left hand to place your fingers over the correct fret. Aim to move your left hand for every fret change. Watch videos of Rocco Prestia and Travis Carlton. They'll play whole lines with one finger, just moving their hands to the correct place. Move your hand a lot and your fingers a little. If your left hand is moving properly then you'll be hitting all the notes without stretching. Always focus on your fingers and the note and in the end your hand will follow.
2. I guess you should try to turn this to your advantage. Try to get a local gig (promote yourselves if you have to) and advertise the hell out of it, including this "issue" and make people come to see you to find out what all the fuss was about.
3. They do. Venues have told my bands that if we play the gig half a mile down the road we won't get booked at their venue. It's business. You don't split your customer base or audiences. It's tough and "unfair" but totally predictable. The tribute band is trying to sell tickets and they see a band doing the same act playing for free at the same venue. Sorry, if this was me I know that I'd be doing the same thing.
4. At this level it's pointless to just rehash the records. That's what cover bands do. The artists live show has to be so much more. Dynamics and arrangement do this. The arrangements and performances fit GK and the songs like a glove. Count me as a fan of this "overblown", exciting and lively style of playing and performance.
5. It's a standard approach. Especially in the theatre. They won't allow a touring version of any play planned or actually running in the West End. Even school Am Drams get refused.
6. And here's another fantastic clip from the White House in 1996. . . .
7. Amazing band, amazing arrangements and an amazing drummer. Amazing 5 string bass playing.
8. Call Alex and explain.
9. I would imagine the UK/US exchange rates aren't working in our favour at the moment.
10.
I really don't know why some venues have the level so high, they must know about their duty of care and potential hearing damage?
As soon as one gets sued and looses the case they'll all put limiters in.
11.
Ironically I woke up even deafer than usual this morning, having used earplugs at a rehearsal for the first time ever last night.
Did you forget to take the plugs out?
12. Firstly, don't do 1 finger per fret. Start with 1,2,4. Next get him into a band ASAP.
13. Glad they got the treatment started early. Bill Wyman, the guy who made me want to pick up a bass.
14. Tony Williams Lifetime at the Marquee about 1969. Everyone had 200watt Marshall stacks on 11. Definitely the first most pointlessly and stupidly loud gig I remember. I believe Gary Moore ruined the hearing of several band members. Including the drummer I played with in a Led Zeppelin tribute band a few years ago. Crazy volume levels, probably louder than Led Zep themselves played.
15.
I've got some ACS pro 10's with mixed results, if I use them in both ears I feel horribly isolated ( started with 17's they were even worse) I they do take out more top end than anything else, I use the ACS's in the ear with tinnitus , which is the side I have the drummer on and a generic one in the other ear so I can hear what's going on better, mind you I already have hearing loss (around the 2 - 8K hz range) so someone with good hearing might have a different experience
I think we've had this conversation before. IMO you're endangering the only good ear you've got left.
16. My TH500 never moves around on my Berg or Barefaced cabs. That's not a good sign if it's happening on your Ampeg cab.
17. I had 5 mins and it appears I've been waiting in vain for the other 10! These days a good gig is good no matter where it is. The Dog and Duck is fine but a limo and a 30,000 seat arena tour would be better. Just try and make every gig better than the last one and play every gig like you've sold out the Albert Hall. Then go home happy that you've just played the best gig you could.
18. Fortuitous. Maybe!! RM's kids took him to court recently to try to stop her influence over his money and financial dealings.
19. Buying good gear and looking after it is the best insurance. There will always be single points of failure. Sometimes you need a backup brain. Last week our guitarist left his leads and pedals at home. The week before the drummer forgot his stool.
20. You couldn't. . . . and these are IEM'S not ear plugs.
21. This is the problem with people not locking their sheds properly. They provide all the tools to allow these scumbags to break into your house as well. I'd ask all neighbours to put good locks on their sheds and use them.
22. Nothing wrong with D class through a CN212. I'd start by taking the pedal away. That's just messing with your sound, and IMO not in a good way. Then you can start to evaluate the EQ. You get more low mids than flat out bass from a CN212 but that's a good thing. IMO a ton of low bass doesn't sound so good is a band setting. I don't use pedals and I can get enough low mids out of my PJ5~TH500~CN212 to rattle your fillings out.
23. +1 ER15's have done me well from an on stage whisper to some very, very loud bands. As Lo-E says, unless you're standing next to a real shed builder I would go for the 17's.
24. ACS moulded plugs are not the cheapest but IMO they are amongst the best. I've been using ACS ER15's for about 9 years now and in that time they have saved my, already pretty compromised, hearing from any more damage. The ACS PRO series also looks like a good range to check out.
25. Love the look on the guitarists face at 6:00 when he looks around expecting to see the cones popping through the front of the cab.
