I'm with Meddle on this. IMO great, creative playing but that Hofner is one of the least pleasant sounding basses on record.

The ACS PRO range seems to be aimed at singers.

Mine is set up as mid level, bass and treble at 1 o'clock and drive and mid freq at 11 o'clock. Gain at 12 and master at 9 or 10. But all that really depends on the band, the bass and cab.

The fan switches on when it's needed.

What else is needed? A great PA and a guy with good ears to mix it.

I've always found that the problems IE's fix are also fixed by using musicians who can play well, play together, get a balance and level and don't act like a bunch of amateurs.

That's explained by "Shadows tribute". I know a band who have decided to move from playing Cream covers to becoming a Cream tribute. This seems to have been achieved by just buying all the right gear. For me (and I suspect the audience) there is no difference except they are each several thousand pounds the poorer. It's interesting to see what successful bands do when they replace an original member. Nile Rogers doesn't require Jerry Barnes to play the exact BE bass parts, Craig Fuller didn't try to copy Lowell George when Little Feat reformed and gong right back to when Peter Green joined John Mayall, he didn't play any Clapton lines at all.

If you make a bass that is so good everyone is falling over themselves to play one then you don't need endorsers to sell them for you.

Apparently Van Morrison signed away most of his early songs and gets virtually nothing if they are used in films etc. He's been re recording most of the popular ones so that when asked if his stuff can be used he makes them use the newly recorded versions. That way he gets some money out of the use of his songs. There were some very clever copies done in the past, when bands hadn't woken up to the revenue potential of their songs. When I needed a low volume rig I looked at all the combo's. The AER Bass combo's are the only ones I thought came close but the price was way to high for me. I settled for a Berg AE112 and my regular amp. Small, light and maintaining a high quality of tone at a reasonable price. These days, for tone and volume and smallest footprint, I'd also be seriously looking at the smaller Barefaced cabs.

I'm biased. I've been using a TH500 for a couple of years. I liked it so much I bought another as a backup. The TH500 apparently uses the same power module as other 900 watt rated amps. Don't be distracted by it's lower rating. This is a loud amp. So I'd get the TH500 and start saving up for some Bergantino or Barefaced cabs to go with it.

In a band a long time ago, we had a keyboard player (usually a great player) who had worked out the run down to Living For The City.. . . . and it was wrong. It sounded very bad against the bass line (which was right) and the band were very fed up with me when I refused to change the bass part to fit with the keys. Apparently I was being unreasonable by insisting that the key board player played the right line!!! Know when to make a stand and when it's not worth it. The joys of being in a band.

Leo Fender didn't personally make any basses. He always had a team of people doing all that, while he sifted through the ideas and ran the company.

I don't know what you're all listening to, but I'm listening to Guy Pratt playing a 5 string status with Pink Floyd in 1994. Sounds like perfect 5 string bass playing to me.

Sometimes you can forget what you've got and how good it sounds. I've been trying out different amp, cab and bass combinations lately and went back to my TH500 for last nights gig. It's a great sounding amp that hits the spot for my ideal bass sound. One of the best sounding amps of the last 10 years.

A lovely guy and playing chops that are off the scale. I saw him at GAK effortlessly playing and chatting to a full house. He's just a regular guy and. . . . he makes mistakes too, but by the time he's played out of them you can't be sure if it was a mistake at all.
