On my MM SR5 I had Dunlops and a 3 inch wide leather strap. If you can find them. . . Allparts strap locks are re badged Dunlops, at half the price.

My Lull PJ5 weighs in at 81/2 lbs. That'll be a pretty light 5er but also on the light side for some 4 string basses. Bass Direct currently has an MTD Kingston 5 string at 7lbs 10oz.

Do you ever get down to London? You can have a listen to my CN212 and Aguilar TH500.

Most bass strings only need 2 or 3 winds. Is that really enough to justify a winder?

If I'm on a stage where there isn't room for that I'll put the bass in the gig bag between sets. I reckon leaving the bass out in anywhere that small is going to get it damaged pretty quickly.

Used to see them at the Marquee. Steve Ferrone was (still is) fantastic drummer but Robbie McIntosh was so much better. One of the best drummers I've ever seen. I don't know how he did it because he could hardly stand up!

Do you have 2 212's for show or do you actually use so much volume that you need a 412 rig? You're talking about halving the number of speakers and your cone area. If you try to compensate and run these cabs at the top of their range then you'll risk over driving the cones which probably won't sound too good or last too long. I used to run 3 112's for very loud gigs, but I've never needed 412's for any band.

I know a guy who has a lego bass. It has a metal rod in the neck and the pieces are glued together. Basses can be made of almost anything. On this one they strengthened the cardboard with various resins and glues so it is now stronger than wood.

Good call. Drop Alex an email and ask abut his 110 and 210 cabs. I don't know these cabs but they might be better for upright.

Just seeing the ad reminded me that the Vanderkley Aurora goes to 2 ohms.

I've played Bergs exclusively since 2008 and a CN212 for the last 2 years. Not quite a CN112 but very close. I love the Berg sound and I thought I was playing the last cab I'd own, but then I had a chance to pick up a couple of Super Compacts. I knew they would be good, but with either my Thunderfunk or TH500 my bands now tell me I now sound bigger, fatter, fuller, clearer and louder. With a weight of 21lbs and being able to use 1 for many gigs where I'd have previously used the 212 maybe I have reached the last cabs I'll own. I rate both makes very highly but my preference is for the SC's.

Various TC amps are either 2ohm or 2.6ohm, my Thunderfunk TFB750-A and the Mesa D800 goes to 2ohm. You can also run 2 4ohm amps into 2 4ohm cabs by daisy chaining the amps.

Does the band get a share of debit and credit card sales? I've seen card sales excluded and that means that the band gets not a lot at the end of the night.

He was a maestro; the inventor of "proper grown up" bass playing. His note choices were complicated or simple but always the peak of melodic and rhythmical playing and always appropriate to the song. I've been a Duck Dunn fan since I first heard Green Onions (I know that was Lewis Steinberg) but Jamerson was the first genius of the electric bass. I remember hearing For Once In My Life for the first time and wondering how that could be played on a bass.

As for bass playing. . . the gig is the buzz and the bass is the tool that enables it. Every day playing a musical instrument is a day that should be savoured.

If I had to stop gigging I'd probably stop playing bass and buy a piano and play that at home.

I don't do multiband gigs so maybe my world is different to yours, but I don't understand all the "engineers want this" and "engineers want that". I only get FOH occasionally in functions and festivals and the guys are usually good. They're flexible, will let me DI from the amp, with a post signal and will talk to me about the sound I want. I've never been dictated to about "what my sound should be".
