Turning up to "sound better" is just papering over the cracks. You should have more confidence in your ability to improve as a bass player.

Loud is good (that's why I have 500w, 800w and 900w amps) and has its place but if you can't play well at low volume loud is going to sound pretty bad.

That's why he's my recommendation every time.

Funny how jack to jack worked perfectly well with 200w, 300w and 400w valve amps back in the day.

IMO, digging in is a waste of energy. Just relax and lighten up your touch, which will improve your tone, speed and fluidity, and work away at it. Your stamina and dexterity will improve over time. IMO a pick is fine but you should be able to play both ways. It's also perfectly OK to use just one finger.

Call me tight but I resent paying for someone to do what I can do for free. I've reliced my car and I kick myself every time I drive through that car park! My 18 year old Lakland has no major marks on it and very few blemishes. How can that detract from its look. IMO you can't get away from honest wear and tear but getting buckle marks on the back of an instrument is just being careless and sloppy.

I used to play through 2 Bergantino rigs, 2 210's and 2 112's. I though they were both great. I used the 112's for every day gigs as they were easier to carry and used the 210's for the very loud gigs because I felt they went louder with more headroom. I have replaced both rigs with a 212 which does 99% of what I need. I add a 112 for the loud gigs but you won't need to do that unless you're also playing with a mad guitarist. I thought the 10's were punchier and the 12's are warmer with a rounder, fuller tone. I miss the 10's and wouldn't rule out getting another couple of 210's in the future, but I don't think I'll be selling the 212. I'd get the cabs and road test each rig to see which you like the best. IMO it's easy to love both. Danweb had a Berg CN212 for sale...... just saying.

I prefer the ports on the front. Then I don't have to worry about leaving a space at the back of the cab for the port to work properly.

I wonder how many people knock their reliced basses about, or do they treat them with care. They do cost rather a lot after all.

Good design decision. It's got everyone talking about Eden amps after a long time off the map.

Did Apple have editorial control? Was Neil Aspinall an executive producer? -
I'm not a fan and don't really have an opinion on either band or their music. On the other hand Noel Gallagher should get an award for being one of the most unpleasant people to take breath.

TV people shouldn't be left in charge of music programs. It seems the subject isn't enough for them. That's why you always get the likes of Al Murray telling you how good the band was when you wanted to be listening to the band. I'm surprised Bono wasn't invited to gush. -
RickyV, mix speakers if you find a pairing that works. One of the better sounding rigs was the Barefaced Midget and Compact, a 12" and a 15" so it can be done. Bergantino mixed 10" and 12" 's. Mixing speaker sizes can get you better results than some would have you believe. If you already have a 112 I'd get another purely because I haven't heard a "middle end of the market" 15" that I liked. I don't like combos because upgrading is always limited to will fit rather than what will sound best.

Is the amp in a case with insufficient ventilation? I had mine in an SKB case and I had to cut holes in the inside of the plastic handle plate by the fan to get any air flow out of the amp. The pots on the front and sockets on the back are soldered directly to the boards so that is a poor design, never affected me though, but bad soldering doesn't sound like it is the cause of this problem.

I turned up to a local (fortunately only 2 miles away) gig and put my cab on the pavement beside the car. I was surprised to see one of our cats run across the pavement! She'd climbed into the cab via the port and gone to sleep. We've had keyboard players turn up without their leads case, drummers forget their cymbals, bring the wrong stands and turn up without a stool, guitarists . . . . well our current guitarist and band leader has the nickname of Mr Pastry (look him up on youtube). Should tell you all you need to know about him! Me? As Barney did, I have forgotten to plug in both cabs. Also I've left the PA amp, tuner, strap and charts at home. Several times I've had to stop on the road to see if there actually was a bass in the case I packed. These days I can't remember much, so I count all the items (7) into the car and back out again. I did once leave my bass behind at a gig. They still tease me about that one.
That's fine not understanding all the other posts
I do understand all the posts, but I was commenting to the OP on the relevance of most of them. As far as I can see there is only 1 speaker chassis in that cab so any extension cab will be a huge benefit to the volume levels and tone. (Using the collective you here) You are talking to a player who has told you several times that she doesn't understand what you are saying and yet you keep on with stuff that is mostly irrelevant to the post. Does she need to add a cab: Probably - one 110 isn't enough Can she add a cab to that combo: Yes - as it says on the back of the cab 8 ohms only Will the extension cab hurt the amp: No - as long as the cab is 8 ohms Will it improve the volume: Yes - more speakers etc Will it improve the tone: Yes - more speakers etc Can she add a third cab: No - 1 extension is maximum Is anything else relevant: No - Nooooooooooooo I was hoping that plain, simple advice would benefit the OP. ps I also understand that 90% of these posts weren't directed at the OP. But how does she know that when you're all talking in a foreign language.
I am a complete electronics numpty and just wondered if anyone could clarify something for me! I have a Promethean 3110 combo (300 watts 8ohms) and want to add a extension cab - a TC Electronics RS 210 (400 watts 8ohms)......... I've been told this will work, but if I ever wanted to add another RS210 I'd need a more powerful head.
Well, I don't quite know what the last 40 posts were about....... You can connect the TC 210 cab to this combo and it will work just fine. It'll sound much louder because it has more speakers making more sound and IMO that will give it a better tone. Nothing will break or sound bad because you have caused a problem by adding the extra cab. Take your combo and bass to try it with the 210 cab, so you can check you like the sound, before you buy. You can also try other cabs as long as they are 8 ohms. Ask about another 210 cab later, if you find out your 310 rig doesn't do what you want.

I don't know about any gain or clip discussions, but if the amp is cutting out and coming back on I reckon you've probably got thermal checks or overheating. If it stays on when you're playing at lower volume then that'll confirm it. I used to run my PRO3 with the master at about 4 o'clock and the gain at about 12 o'clock and never had problems. Maybe your Zoom is pushing the amp over its limit. Have you tried playing without it.
What I meant is they only advise it with their own cabs as they can't vouch for other brands being 8 ohms can they?
That is only a marketing ploy. Any 3 8 ohm cabs will work with the TC heads because these heads go to 2.67 ohms. I used to use 3 Bergantino cabs.
-
Just to massively confuse matters don't some TC heads run 3x8 ohm cabs as long as they are all TC cabs?
The TC heads that are advertised to run 3 cabs can run any 8 ohm cabs. There is nothing special about the cabs, just those amps can run down to 2.67 ohms.
-
This is the problem with combo's. If you want to upgrade one part you have to replace both parts. How loud do you want to play? If you want to run 2 210 8 ohm cabs you'll need a separate amp. 2 210 cabs and a 500 watt amp will be a great rig and you can keep the combo for playing at home or low volume rehearsals. I'd also suggest a 212 to pair with your separate amp.
-
Forget the watts for the moment. Your combo is running 1 cab at 8 ohms. Add a second 8 ohm cab and it will be running at 4 ohms. That is the limit for most amps. So 2 8 ohm cabs = 4 ohms = good. Add a third 8 ohm cab and you will be trying to run the amp at 2.67 ohms which will generate more heat and usually causes the amp to at best shutdown or worst cause damage.

I used to go to the Hyde park gigs. Saturday afternoons, a few beers first in The Tabard at Turnham Green, jump on the 88 bus and then see John Mayall, Jeff beck Group and many others. What a time. ps I thought WEM sounded pretty bad in comparison to the other gear available at the time. I wouldn't expect it to sound even that good now.
