  1. I've seen half a dozen guitarists and a couple of bassists drop their instruments when the strap has been twisted and come off the button. Only a couple actually hit the floor but if there is a way of preventing the damage that hitting the floor, or some other hard surface, why not take it.
  2. I'm not sure I'd buy one of these. I had enough trouble on small stages getting the space for backward firing ports for this design to have any interest for me. I'd definitely be interested in the NXT cabs though.
  3. Hi Chris, My first 5 string bass was an SR5. I played that for 4 or 5 years, but the sound was never "me". Maybe the SH models might have suited me better, but they didn't exist at the time, anyway it was a good bass to start me on my 5 string journey.
  4. I've been using Dunlop strap locks on all my basses since the early 90's. I'm still using the original set on my main bass. Never had an issue. I just bought a bass that has Musicman straplocks fitted, which are a new one on me. They seem to be designed well, are very simple to fit and easy to operate.
  5. I have a Harvest leather strap and an unknown leather and sued padded strap. Both are just about 31/2" wide and very comfortable. Got to have good straps.
  6. TI flats have been on my PJ5 for the last 8 years or so. I have no plans to change them, ever. I also use a lump of foam. IMO sounds exactly like a Precision should. A few years ago I tried some Labella flat's, but the difference wasn't great enough to make me change.
  7. That would be ideal, but my last 6 gigs have been with 5 different bands, so I have to bring my own backline. These days lightweight gear is some of the best on the market. In case things get worse, I have contingency plans. . . . check out the Mbrace Stage Guitar Stand https://www.imuso.co.uk/itm/mbrace-stage-guitar-stand
  8. I'd go for the 500 watt 210 combo and start saving for the 210 extension cab. IMO 500 watts ticking over will give you a better sound than 200 watts flat out.
  9. Do they do a 5 string version?
  10. 2005 was the year I buggered my back. Lifting 2 x 90+lb cabs the wrong way for over 8 years ended how I should have predicted. . . . if I was using my brain!! I can't lift properly because I also buggered up my knee running half marathons in the 80's. I was referred to hospital once and after relating all the details, and telling them I thought it was a herniated disc, they astonished me by saying it was "just old age"! NHS fail on that one. I've done many gigs sitting on bar stools. 2 times my back gave out during the gig. I managed to finish but the band had to pack my gear away and load the car. If it wasn't for D class amps, Neo cabs and now 7-8lb basses I'd have had to quit playing years ago. I did Pilates for a while and my back gave out during a session! I'm doing gentle workouts every day now and building my strength, so fingers crossed. If you haven't any back pain, now is the right time to start looking after your back.
  11. If only. . . . I've never experienced that. An equal share is the best I've seen and, back in the day, I know of a few high charging function bands who used to give the deps less than equal share.
  12. My bands split the money equally, as do some band leaders. Some "pay the band" and I don't get involved in those cases. The guys I play with are pretty open, honest and fair. Being paid less in a band seems like they are undervaluing and conning you. That would make me leave rather than a disagreement over the cash.
  13. IMO Jazz basses are good in any situation. Take your pick. Maybe start with Sire. I'd also have a look at Lakland Skylines. Great basses for not very much money. I'd also have a look at another (better?) P bass. One with rounds and one with flats? IMO they take some beating in any genre.
  14. A great bass player. Very sad news.
  15. Same. My wife's stock reply is, "If you think it's that good, buy it".
  16. A few amps and cabs lasted for 10 years or more, the rest only for a couple of weeks/months. I am always looking for an upgrade, something that sounds better, and lately something that weighs less, so I'll buy an amp or cab that could be a potential #1 and check it out. Mostly they don't knock my current amp/cab off the #1 spot, and are sold. So while it looks like I've owned a lot of gear (I have) I've only gigged a small number.

  18. Rick Hall - Fame Studios Steve Cropper - Stax Records Cosimo Matassa - J&M Recording Studios. Cosimo kick started Rock and Roll. “Virtually every R&B record made in New Orleans between the late ’40s and the early ’70s was engineered by Cosimo Matassa, and recorded in one of his four studios,” More than 250 nationally charting singles and 21 gold records were recorded at the studio, most of them distinguished by what came to be known as the Cosimo sound: strong drums, heavy bass, light piano, heavy guitar and light horns. It is sometimes also called simply the New Orleans sound.
  19. I've had PM discussions about bass with guys in Australia, Brazil, Argentina and the US, all via posts on Talkbass. I joined TB in 2007, and so far haven't personally experienced any of the downsides that seem to bug others here. But after witnessing a few blow ups I can see why TB is so aggressively moderated. I prefer to post with care. I like the more relaxed approach here. Having said that, after some stupid posts during lockdown, I have 3 users blocked on BC. Something I've never wanted to do on TB.
  20. I buy amps because I want to be loud, so I always plug into the loudest input.
  21. I wouldn't touch Denmark Street with a barge pole. So far I have only had good experiences with the Bass Gallery. There's Charlie Chandler's Guitar Experience in Hampton Wick.
  22. I take 2 of everything: 2 basses, 2 amps, 2 cabs and 2 sets of leads. I have spares of everything else as well: tuners, batteries, strings, strap, earplugs and fuses. I had a Marshall in the 70's that was blowing fuses so I got in a few of every fuse I needed. I haven't changed a fuse on a gig since then, but I still carry the tub full of fuses. A few years back, I was able to save the gigs when a guitar amp and a PA desk blew fuses. I only take 1 trolley, but with the light cabs I don't always need it. Lightweight and small gear means it easily fits in the back of the hatchback, with the rear seats up.
  23. D'Addario NYXL's. I was going to change the strings on my Jazz but when we had the first lockdown, I put it off. These NYXL's are still on the bass and still have enough twang in them to keep me happy.
