  1. They do this with furniture as well. A carpenter friend built a refectory table and then customer decided it had to look like "Oliver Cromwell's troops used it!"
  2. The most musical pleasure I get is when I've done a great gig. Can't beat that feeling.
  3. I haven't seen her live but, on all the videos I've seen, I'd agree with your review of her sound. She's obviously a great player, with plenty of great licks, but that's not a good sound!!
  4. Any amp will go into any cab, as long as you match the watts to the cabs capabilities. Doubling the power of the amp will give you very little extra volume. Adding a second cab will give you a lot more volume and better tone, simply by moving more air. Most 112 cabs are 8 ohms, so when you see an 800 watt amp being used it's only putting out 400 watts at the most, and most of these amps will not be running flat out. I am probably using 150-200 watts when I#'m running my 800 watt amp into 1 cab.
  5. I consider both my basses to be #1's. The bass I choose depends on my back. On good days I'll pick up my Sadowsky Jazz. On bad days I'll play my Mike Lull PJ5 bass. It's all down to the weight. Sometimes I'll start with the Jazz and switch to the P for the 2nd set.
  6. My Japanese RV5 Metro is a great bass . Easy to play and with a huge tone. I tried a chambered NYC in Guitar Guitar in Epsom, and I preferred the sound of my Metro.
  7. Solo bass rather than bass solo. . . . Francois Rabbath
  8. Playing a song in front of an audience isn't about listening to the song, or even liking it. Who wrote it is even less important. It's about performance, keeping an audience interested and entertainment. Then it's about playing well as a bassist and playing well as a unit.
  9. We were just finishing my first ever gig, at a youth club, and the singer said, "We'd now like to do the last number". All the lights came on and the caretaker was walking up the room saying, "I wouldn't bother mate. They've all gone home!".
  10. Separate amp and cab. Then you can upgrade either at will. You can also use amp+cab for small gigs and amp+cab+cab for larger gigs.
  11. Hey Will, Thanks for the update. Bass Bros is looking good. Cheers
  12. I expect this option was "mislaid" in an update. It will probably come back at some point. In the mean time, searching for the few 5 string basses they may or may not have, in a list of 60 basses, is not a good use of my time. It might not bother you but my 5 string requirement is non negotiable so looking at 1 4 string bass is a waste of my time. Instead I'll go to sites where I can select what I'm interested in.
  13. Like all insurance, It's always a good thing if you never use it. I've never made a claim for the car or house but it makes no sense (plus being illegal in the case of cars) not to have full insurance.
  14. I keep a regular eye on the Bass Bros web site, but they seem to have removed the facility to select 5 string basses. That makes the web site unusable for me. Shame.
  15. I get the comments, but I have 2 #1 amps. Doesn't everyone? I take both to every gig and use the one that sounds best on that stage.
  16. And The Reddings. . . . The Awakening https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFNkiYkf_Zk
  17. Then there's Marvin Holmes and the Uptights. . . . Ride Your Mule https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHDrsDHLWzg Ooh Ooh The Dragon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mubF4rS493I
  18. Did anyone mention Willie Mitchell yet? My Babe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8tcsy4MgfA Soul Serenade https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSuunaEIUHY Prayer Meeting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=him8jJuh72c
  19. I don't understand buying a cheap amp as a backup. For many years the back up for my TH500 was another TH500. If I ever have to use the second amp I want it to be as good as the first amp.
  20. I'd question that a Jazz is an "easier" bass to play than a Precision. If anyone finds a Precision more difficult, they need to work harder on their technique.
  21. This. I've carried fuses since the 70's. I've given fuses to bands for PA's and guitarists for amps, but never needed one myself. I've lost count of the times I've bailed out guitarists with batteries, leads and straps!
  22. I bring 2 of everything. Small and lightweight gear has made this a realistic option. The last time I had any gear failed on a gig was in 2005 when a speaker lead stopped working. Before that was in 1999 when my valve amp cut out. Speakon leads and D class amps have upped my reliability figures to 100%. I have to go back to the 80's for my last cab failure. Sometimes I'll try both amps and both basses on a sound check and use the one that sounds best at the time.
  23. But. . . . you have a huge choice. There are a massive number of hits and popular songs to choose from. You could play a different set for a week and not repeat a song. The real problem is lazy bands or band leaders. If they chose to play the same limited list of songs then boredom can set in.
  24. I have owned a Precision since March 1969. Everyone I rated back then used one so when I had the cash, that's what I had to have. IMO it's a timeless sound and fits so well into most genres. My passive PJ5 is a perfect bass, but I also like a wider range, so I play my active Jazz on those gigs.
