New Cory and the Wong Notes episode 'Bass' ft Victor Wooten
chris_b replied to yorks5stringer's topic in General Discussion
Love it. -
There have been posts where guys have reported their amps falling off the cabs. I guess that's a possibility for any light weight amp. There will probably be some vibration in even the best cab, and that's why I put approx 2" of foam under my amps. I started with my Mesa 400+ (with its 16 something valves) and just carried on through SS and D class. My amps never wander about, so I believe they're not being vibrated, much.

As Bill says, if the cab is vibrating enough to throw the amp off, then you're wasting a lot of energy that should be going into creating your sound. And while I know amps have to pass tests for various levels of vibrations, I treat my amps as delicate things. I wouldn't want any amp I own to be shaken around as much as this. So you need a cab that doesn't waste your tone and volume in this way, and you need a vibration resistant foam between the cab and the amp.

I always choose heavy gauge strings. IMO the heavier the better sound. My D'addario NYXL's are 45 - 130

This is why my heart sinks when people start threads about modding basses!!!! -
Some good options in valve and solid state amps.

I've played with his drummer, Craig, many times over the years. Great player.

Just restring it and see how it goes. You won't damage anything. If you are moving from a low B to a high C, you probably won't have to change the nut. The tension of all the strings is within a few lbs of each other, so swapping a B for a C should be OK.

Russell Jackson was a big influence on me too. He was the first guy I saw with replacement pickups in his P bass, Bartolini's. I bought a set from Chandler's the next week. They were a huge improvement to my sound.

I have TI flats on my Mike Lull PJ5. I tried @Happy Jack's Fender Precision with La Bellas and they sounded good, but not good enough to make fork out for another set of strings. The heavy duty La Bella 1954 flats look interesting but the TI's are still going strong, so I still have no inclination to change them.

Heavy bass? What's that? -> comfortable straps!

So is the memory foam strong enough to support the bass? -
Heavy bass? What's that? -> comfortable straps!
chris_b replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
These straps look interesting. I recently discovered that my Harvest strap, thick, wide, very comfortable, heavy leather, weighs in at 1lb. So my weight limit for a bass wasn't 9.5lbs! I've been carrying 10.5lbs! These are all small margins, but when you have issues, believe me, every ounce counts. Looks like it is a 1" strap in the middle with 1" of memory foam either side. Does the memory foam support the bass or is it just for padding? -
A Very Special song growing up in the 80's.

There was great music being made in the 80's. Released in 1987, this signalled that Little Feat was back on the road. . . . If you want to sound like Joe Dart, get a Jazz. That's the bass he uses on gigs.

I've just been sent a couple of video clips of the first pro band I was in, playing live on a European TV show. the singers were pretty cheesy, but the band was good. I was just a few months out of school and they were recorded in December 1968! No, I'm not putting them up here!!!

Nice. I love his stuff.

Public Liability Insurance and Pat Testing, Needed?
chris_b replied to Chienmortbb's topic in General Discussion
It means the club has reduced the cost of its own insurance by not covering any third parties, ie the bands or other entertainers. So if your PA falls over and hits someone etc, your insurance would be paying out rather than the club's insurance. If you don't have insurance the you'll be stumping up the cash out of your own pocket. -
People like them and order them, so Fender make them. Easy. No for me. I prefer to make my own scrapes and dents, but If you have the cash, why not. I briefly played a Custom Shop Pino Precision. It was one of the best playing basses I've picked up, and the Master built are supposed to be even better. If you want to fork out £6k or more on a bass these Fenders should be on your audition list.

I've been using NYXL's for about 4 years now. They are full range but with a nice lively top end, which lasts for a long time. I change my strings once a year and there is still life left in them.
