  1. So it's OK for he rest of the guys to be in an originals band, writing their own lines, but the bass player has to be in a covers band, by only playing lines as written!!!!
  2. Daryl heard about the vacancy from a friend and auditioned.
  3. If your barometer for a great musician is only technique then you're missing a lot of what makes musicians great. Don't confuse simple with easy. The most impressive thing on the Stones gig I saw at the O2 about 10years ago, was Charlie Watts. He never missed a beat and was spot on for feel all night. I also saw the Stones twice in 1976 at Earl's Court. and they used 2 drummers, adding Billy Preston's drummer. He was a very good, but totally superfluous to the gig. Charlie owned him.
  4. I replaced 2 AE112's with a CN212. Everyone loved the sound of both but the CN212 got special praise from the bands. My different Berg cabs were all kinds of great, but they all sounded pretty similar to me. I'd be very interested to find out how the latest NXT cabs compare.
  5. If you are giving it your best, no instrument is pretentious. Simple bass lines are usually the best and most effective bass lines. Good luck with the gig. All basses are a collection of notes. A 5 string has more notes and they are arranged differently, apart from that it's just a bass like any other.
  6. I wash my hands before playing. I don't have greasy skin or acid sweat. I never wipe or clean my strings. A set of rounds usually lasts a year.
  7. I wouldn't buy an amp without a DI and mute button. I don't call those gimmicks or optional features. I like an amp to have a fabulous baked in tone, without excessive use of the EQ. So far I haven't needed anything else. Any mid controls (high and low) are usually unused on my amps, but IMO the HPF's being added by some designers is a very interesting option.
  8. I would imagine the workings of a truss rod is effective and will work across a range of tensions. I don't know anyone who resets the truss rod every time they change strings.
  9. White + tort = good move
  10. I've had the same set of NYXL's on my Jazz bass for the last 2 years and there's still life in them. I might change them at the end of the year, we'll see.
  11. No, I don't. I have 2 basses, 3 amps and 4 cabs. They all get used. I have 5 screwdrivers, 4 saws, 2 spirit levels etc. They all get used as well. IMO owning stuff is fine if you use it. It's still fine if you don't, but not for me. If you want to sell but can't get started, just pick the bass you play the least. Keep going until you arrive at the last 2. That's when you stop selling.
  12. You don't re-Plek the neck every time you change string suppliers or gauges, so the strings must be irrelevant to the process.
  13. When I had rear ported cabs a couple of drummers said they didn't like the sound because when we're set up in a line they'd hear more bass from the back of the cab and less sound from the front. Also in some of the gigs I do space is so tight that leaving 6" behind the cab is difficult. Front ported might not make a sonic difference but IMO it's a more convenient package.
  14. He mentioned that the production team had given him a list of bassists to talk about, so I guessed he was winging it. I didn't think Peter Hook was the best representative for the bass playing world either. His knowledge seemed pretty thin as well. Never mind at least bassists got 5 mins of prime time radio, even if it was only R4!!
  15. I'm shocked. This is terrible news.
  16. I reckon Motown will also be out there forever.
  17. Thanks for the reply. . . . . Also. . . . @ped Where has the Edit option gone?
  18. I have never bought anything back. They were all sold because I found something better, so no point. However. . . . If anyone knows where my old Mike Lull M5V Jazz bass went (5 string, burst, rosewood, tort, Aguilar 18v pre amp), which I sold to Brother Jones and he sold on, I will definitely make an exception.
  19. At least you didn't get. . . . "Play something you know!"
  20. Most of the bands I've played with in the last 20 years have played at least one original song, even the cover bands. And most of the original bands have done at least one version of a cover. Original or cover doesn't matter. The only criteria, is the song is good enough and does it go down well with the punters.
  21. If people like her singing, there's still a chance for me!
  22. About 30 years ago we were looking for a singer for our R&B band and we had a "Mick Jagger" turn up. He was fed up of singing Stones songs and wanted out. The trouble was no matter what he sang he looked and sounded just like Jagger. He was very good at that but hopeless singing Dave Edmonds and Chuck Berry songs.
  23. Show us a pic of the front. Does the crack go all the way through?
