  1. Unfortunately we were in a school hall, and I don't drink anyway. I just sat there ignored, unloved and trying not to burst into tears!! I did chat with the singer. No one wanted to talk to her either.
  2. I was on a "tour". Thursday in Bury and next night in Keighley. As we had a spare afternoon we did a session at a local school for the students. Afterwards they were invited to chat to the band and ask questions. Everyone had queues of kids asking about their instruments. . . . except me!! Not a single student wanted to talk about bass! Ho Hum!
  3. IME bass players are the ones with brains, who can pack a van, write great set lists and come up with better arrangements. We're also the ones holding the band together.
  4. I use Duracell Ultra and change the battery every year, whether it needs it or not. The old batteries from the bass go into tuners etc, which are changed when they run down.
  5. I am kinda brand loyal-ish. I used Mesa Boogie (2 x 90lbs) for 10 years, Bergantino(2 x 30lbs) for another 10 and for the last 10, Barefaced (2 x 22lbs). The weight of these cabs tracks my physical fitness!! Currently I own a Super Compact, Super Midget, BB2 and 2 One10's. Unless a miracle happens I imagine these cabs will see me out.
  6. Give me a call when you get fed up with it.
  7. That's about right!!
  8. duplicate. . . . !
  9. IMO if a bass sustains well the rest of the note sounds better.
  10. I play in lots of trio bands and it is my favourite line up. You just gotta do it right. Don't play louder, don't add effects to fill out the sound, don't play more notes. These are all mistakes. Nothing sounds worse than trying to fill in the spaces. Improve your timing, embrace the spaces and just play the songs. It might sound "empty" at first but you'll get over that and realise you didn't need 2 guitars in the first place.
  11. She's a great player. Shame Guitar Guitar haven't flooded the stores with Sandbergs to coincide with the tour.
  12. There was a punch-up on a gig we did in Dover a few years ago. That's the only fight in a pub I've seen this century.
  13. Sorry Ewan, but Roberta's version beats yours hands down.
  14. Sad news. Beautiful voice. She launched the careers of Luther Vandross and Marcus Miller by firing them from her band. She told them they should be running their own bands and being successful in their own right.
  15. . . . . or expect a lot, lot less from the 2 x 8!!
  16. I would be surprised if the bass and amp was anything special. The tone and attack is all the player.
  17. What combo is it?
  18. What is your regular rig? 2 x 8 cabs are fine at home, but I wouldn’t be able to gig with one.
  19. To balance any bass you need a top horn that is long enough to balance the instrument when on the strap.
  20. My problem with "upgrades", "downgrades", "mods" etc, how do I know the knowledge, experience and skill set of the person making these changes? Do they know what they are doing or are they enthusiastic idiots without a clue. . . . but still think they know what they are doing!! My solution is to buy a bass that is exactly what I want in the first place.
  21. i agree. I don't want bass gear that has been altered in any way by an owner. I don't even like internal shots of amps. Why do that? Why take the amp casing apart?
  22. I don't dig in. My days of exuberant overplaying have long gone. I used to take the strings down till they buzzed and then raised them until thy didn't. Then I had a "forensic" set up from the Bass Gallery, where they reduced the action even further. At first I couldn't play the bass, but after working on my technique, that's I prefer all my basses.
  23. Sometimes it's just better to pick a new name. Status Quo was called Traffic until Steve Winwood decided to use that name.
  24. I've bought and sold basses using bank transfers, here and in Europe, pre B***** of course. It is a leap of faith but as I only buy and sell on Basschat and you can get a feel for the situation if you know the person or have seen them around for awhile. I probably wouldn't get into a sale with someone who had only just joined, or had no history. My preferred process is to meet up with cash. I've driven to Birmingham, Brighton and Margate and a few places in between for the right gear.
  25. I've been playing bass since before many here were born, and for a year, just before Covid, I took lessons from a West End player. I told him he probably wasn't going to shift me out of my rut, but could he make it wider. He didn't teach me anything I didn't already know but he taught me how to use it in different ways. That improved my fretboard skills, improved my fluency and made me think differently. . . . took the blinkers off. Anyone who thinks lessons can't teach them anything, or lessons won't improve how they play, is wrong.
