1.
Steve Harris does strum chords sometimes- which looks like Nard's chucking technique. eg. here at 0.35 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpI49B6QVUY
Bernard also showed Nile Rodgers this a technique on guitar which Nile refers to as 'chucking'. It's basically about fretting a chord across all six strings, but only picking out the notes you want and muting the rest. Nile worked on this for a while and it became his 'style' of rhythm guitar playing. You can see him employ it on things like 'Le Freak'. Incidentally, check out the live Chic DVD's - they may not have Bernard on bass (it's Jerry Barnes these days), but the band is hot, and Nile is a funk machine! In case anyone doesn't know, I am publishing a Bernard edwards/Nile Rodgers book in a couple of weeks time - check it out at: www.basslinepublishing.com - there will be 5 copies up for grabs to basschatters in the form of a competition! You should also check out Daryl Easlea's book Everybody Dance: Chic & The Politics of Disco - amazing read. Cheers Stu
 2.
My friend wrote a book on Chic a couple of years ago which is a darn good read (I'm not just saying that). Highly recommended: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Everybody-Dance-Ch...9053&sr=8-1 Nick
Hi Nick, Yes I have read that book and it is indeed excellent. It was an invaluable resource when i was writing my book, and the author, Daryl Easlea was kind enough to allow me to quote from it. My book is out at the beginning of March - it's heading off to the printers today in fact. Cheers Stu
 3.
Cracking edition.....NAMM Report, Fodera Report, Cables and a feature on Bernard Edwards. Top marks to everyone at BGM Cheers, Jim
The feature on Bernard Edwards is a preview from my forthcoming book: Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards - Funk & Disco Grooves. The mag got a bit of a revamp recently - we now have a new approach to reviews, and will only be reviewing new stuff from now on. Stu
 4.
Apparently he had a solo album released in 1983 called 'Glad to Be Here'. Presumably released when Chic split. An ironic title with hindsight. I've not heard it though, so I can't comment on what it's like. I imagine it'd be quite rare. Edwards was a bass colossus. I can't wait for Stuart Clayton to release his 'Ultimate Funk & Disco Grooves' book. In my opinion it'll be a 'must own' for groove disciples... and naff bass players like me who want to groove.
At the same time Nile Rodgers released his solo album, titled 'Adventures In The Land of the Good Groove' - both flopped, although are supposedly both very good. Book is out at the beginning of March and is looking great. Stu
 5.
Quite fancy reading a review on some of your stuff dave. So have just subscribed to BGM. Do you know of any more reviews on the horizon? Cheers
I also have one of Dave's compressor pedals, which is great, so there could well be a review of that at some point. Dave's pedals are really good stuff, check them out if you haven't already - the distortion he built for me is killer! Stu
 6. One day, I will find time to make a DVD of my Ultimate Slap Bass book... thanks for the mention! Until then, if you want a book+CD with over 200 exercises, covering EVERYTHING, it's worth a look ;-) Stu
 7.
hey Stu, how's the Chic book coming along ? P
Very nicely - I just have this bass teaching job that keeps getting in the way of writing the damn thing... Seriously, it's looking great. Most of the bass transcriptions are done, just sorting out the guitar transcriptions. Incidentaly, it's not full transcriptions, it's been written along the lines of the Motown and James Brown rhythm sections books. That means you get a transcription of the Chorus, the Verse, then all the cool variations that occur in the line. Basically, all you need, all the cool fills etc, but presented in a slightly different way. It makes a lot of sense when you see it, and means i don't have to write a 12 page transcription for each song - original versions of tracks like 'He's The Greatest Dancer' and 'We Are Family' are over 8 minutes long...! Should be out in March. Stu
 8.
I was lucky enough to get tickets to see Jeff Beck in november, and I was blown away by her playing. When they first walked on I was slightly anxious as she looked about 12 but after a bass solo in an early number I knew she meant business
Great vid. I seriously recommend Tal's album, 'Transformation', it's awesome stuff. Stu
 9.
Thanks a lot Terry! Just what I needed.
Damn, I was gonna write one of those... Stu
 10.
That seems like a really fun show. I bet those bass solos are every time Beyonce has to change outfits.
That's a great bassline on that song. The US Bass Player ran a full transcription of it a few months ago and I learnt it the other day for a bit of readng practice. Great stuff. Stu
 11. Hi all, I've posted a special competition in the competitions forum - we have 3 Stuart Hamm Bass Transcription Books to give away. Here's the link: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=9251 Haven't had any entries to the competition, so giving the thread a bump here. Cheers Stuart
 12. Just a quick note to say it was great to meet everyone yesterday. I had a great day even though I have now completely lost my voice after spending the day chatting and extolling the virtues of studying at BIMM... Lessons will be interesting tomorrow...! Stu
 13.
I'll be mingling there too, so if you recognise me say hi - I've only had the good fortune of meeting one basschatter before (Luke Ward) so it'd be great to see some more of you! Just about to head off actually from Surrey, so I should be there by Monday
Please all come and say hi if you see me! Be great to meet some basschatters. I'll be on the BIMM stand most of the day, and on GB Guitars & EBS occasionally too. Stu
The Boomstick Bottom Feeder is a clone of the old 440 but its amazing, it's my personal fav filter, it's small, true bypass, has a massive range of sounds and is just so musical which is the main thing, a lot of people buy it then think it's subtle but get it in a band situation and its amazing because that huge wetness that other filters might have just sounds like drop out live. The FX25b is horrible, simply horrible complete and utter waste of time. The FX25 is cool but very much a 2 trick pony with a maximum of 2 settings one just being a big dubby low pass filter. But generally it's just to unpredictable to use usefully. So in my opinion just to give you a good idea of what I think the Boomstick Bottom Feeder is better than are Moog Low Pass Filter Emma Discumbobulator Xotic Bass Robotalk EHX Bassballs EHX Q-tron Mini, Normal, Plus Boss AW-2 Guyatone BR-2 EBS Bass IQ Digitech BSW DOD FX25B, FX25 MXR Bass Auto Q I've owned or used all of these and end of the day only thing I found that sounds better than the Bottom Feeder is an Original Mutron III or a similar period Mutron Clone but these are like 6 times the size and very difficult to power as Higgie will tell you, also alot of the parts in them degrade so you can't always get a decent one for you £300-£450 So visit www.tonefactor.com and check it out
I have a DOD FX25 for sale on Ebay if that's of any use to anyone? Stu
 17. Hi guys, I'll be at Bass Day now representing BIMM (Brighton Institute of Modern Music). I'll be doing a bit of playing, and of course answering questions about the various courses on offer. Please come up and say hi if you see me! Cheers Stuart
 18.
Yep BGM is the best out there as far as i'm concerned. It has it's US counter-part but that's usually 75% adverts, with a few reviews and interviews chucked in for good measure.
The US equivalent (which was nothing to do with BGM by the way) has now finished. Stu

 20.
I play it between 7th and 5th (with just a hint of 6th) g string down to a. Sounds great.
Never worked out the line on the record, but when I play it (every weekend...) I play a descending D minor pentatonic lick off the 7th fret G - can't remember what exercise in my book was similar, but that's probably the one I use. I've always meant to transcribe the track since I love the bass part. Now here's a question.... anyone know who played bass on the original? I do. Stu
 21.
Hey Stu - that is something eBay put in place a while ago, for security. When it goes above £100 or £200 or something, the bidders automatically get their identity hidden. I'm not sure how much more secure it makes it though. Mike
Ahh, well there you go, that was something I was unaware of. Ignore my last post everyone... Stu
 22.
My first amp was a Sound City 50 - was pretty good really. The Carlsbro replacement was not a better amp, but it was a lot smaller, lighter and didn't smell so bad...there's progress for you. I wouldn't pay more than £100 even if in good nick, (with mullards and gold plated mains plug.. ^_^ ) BB
This is interesting. The fact that when you click on the number of bids all the bidders are named Bidder1, Bidder2 etc is quite dodgy. I think it's a scam. Recently, I wanted to sell my Sony Ericsson mobile phone as I had upgraded to a new handset. I knew I could sell it on Ebay for around 100. When I looked at similar models, I found that some had bids up to 500! I looked at the bidders and they were all named Bidder1, Bidder 2 etc. Here's an example: http://offer.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V...em=150170851773 Look at any legitimate auction, and you'll see that the bidders are NAMED by their Ebay ID. Here's an example; http://offer.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V...em=330177377484 Unless I'm missing something (and I might be, I don't use Ebay that often), this appears to be a scam. I guess the logic is, that a potential buyer would see all those bids, and assume it must be worth it if that many people want it!! What do you all think? Stu
