This was truly a gig i will never forget. I was lucky enough to be sitting 5 rows from the front where i could clearly see the superhuman goings on- especially Edgar's... I found the night totally inspiring from start to finish, were any other basschatters there that would like to share their feelings? The spontaneity and the sheer talent provided what i think was probably my favourite gig i have attended so far. For me the cherry on the cake was Edgar's rendition of a Bach cello solo, and I'm sure i'm not alone in thinking we'll be seeing much more of Julian Lage's wonderful playing in the years to come. He's going places.

If I could afford it I would change my strings every 2 weeks. Unfortunately, it's almost a quarterly thing

Not that essential to the discussion but I concur, John Patitucci is the sh*t. I absolutely love Remembrance and Line By Line, and his playing with Chick Corea is unbelievable. John Patitucci + John Myung = My acquisition of my six strings.
Cracking stuff! I particularly like the way the keys player just wouldn't shut up I'm going to have to track down some of these guys' work. Eek. No thanks, I'd rather listen to a Manowar CD
John Ellis (the nice Soprano [mostly] sax player) has some alright albums, but nothing as good as this. Jojo Meyers own stuff is just him playing live drums to drum and bass which isn't really my cup of tea, he also plays in a very cliché funky band which isn't that special. To my horror the beautiful man on keys among many other things (he's most famous for his trombone playing) doesn't have any releases that he leads and I can't find him much generally - a great shame, he's probably my favourite soloist on the album.
-
For me Gwizdala's grooves and composition are what make him so excellent, his solos are still good but the horn arrangements on Mystery To Me are beautiful and the melodic writing in tunes such as Darkness is just brilliant - totally unique. The fact that he has John Ellis, Jojo Meyer and Elliot Mason (trombone, bass trumpet, keyboards and ingenious solos) also helps somewhat, I find the line up on his other major release a bit stale in comparison.
today finally got both Janek Gwizdala's albums, which are live ones.. Didn't get to listen to "Mystery To Me" (2004) yet, but already went through whole "Live at 55 Bar" (2008).. The music is f*cking brilliant, nothing more to add.. For those, who dig modern jazz, it's a must-have. After an intense listening to Janek, Mr.Feraud, as Doddy mentioned once, does start to seem really unmusical.. There may be10 times less notes in Janek's improvs, but, man, it breathes music, as opposed to Hadrien, for me at least..
And Mystery To Me is his better album, by far in my opinion. Prepare yourself!

How is this not completely awesome? Especially if you were actually there, that would be so much fun.

This guy is badass, thanks for introducing me to him! Just relaxing to the album 'Bestial Cluster'. I feel like I have accomplished something today.

Decent bass playing by a non-bassist?
I remember reading an interview with Lemmy where he said that Hendrix actually played a lot of the bass on his albums, not Noel Redding.
I'm not much of a Hendrix fan but I do recall this bit about him, he played almost all the bass in studio recordings and in fact he played very tastefully, again nothing too flashy but exactly what was required of the music. I think Noel Redding was his live bass player, and to be honest I think he butchers some really great songs, especially in the woodstock videos I saw a while back... if that is him... -
I would not attempt this yourself unless you have some experience of refinishing and/or shooting urethane or epoxy. You'll end up ruining the 'board (as I did as a young man, trying to 'Jaco-up' a P-bass) and you'll be back to square one. This process takes time and involves working up through grades of fine grit papre and pads. If you want to try it, get hold of a junker neck and get on Google. Failing that, give the neck to a luthier who is proficient in this line of work.
Cheers, I'm not completely deterred but still, the warning is appreciated. I will check how much this would cost to do too. On another note your signature has always made me think... I just thought you should know that it has benefited the world in some way. Not to say I wouldn't think otherwise.

Hello everyone, After playing a Pedulla Pentabuzz I have decided that one of many changes I need to make to my Yamaha TRB fretless is the feel of the neck, more specifically the fingerboard. On a Pedulla fretless there is (as I'm sure you all know) a relatively thick layer of varnish on the fretboard, I like the effect of this, it sounds nice. Now I am well aware that I can't make my TRB sound like a Pedulla that easily but I think adding a similar layer of varnish would be a step in the right direction. The fingerboard of my TRB is made of rosewood, is it the case that I simply need ebony (like on the buzz basses) to sound that bit better? Or will a good layer of varnish simulate the very compact composition of ebony? So, the main thing I want to know is how exactly it is best to varnish my fingerboard for this effect? If anyone knows how Pedulla do it and could share it, that would indeed be an added bonus! I know there have been some threads on this already but I get very mixed impressions from looking through all of them, so a nice up-to-date set of specific answers would be great. Thanks ya'll

Where can I hear some Steve Berry Trio? I had a good look but I can't seem to find any to listen to without buying first, I prefer to hear my music before I buy it, not to say I want a torrent, just a youtube link or a preview. Thanks

Nik West - Anyone listened to her at all?

I'm generally not impressed... mainly however by the lyrics in the first song on her myspace. "You see she was educated by urban exploitation and graduated with honours" ...eurgh -
What strings do you use on a five string 35" scale bass????
Can't fault you for it (Hide's the Ibanez as things are gettin scary)...eheh...eheheh...uhm... Ty for the advice anyways, guess I got stuck into knowing where my strings are always stocked (and the fact that they know me by voice should I call) that I forgot to do what I did in the first place; search for cheaper car insur...er bass strings! This sure opens up gauge options (6-string super long come in one gauge for some reason...) and I can always pick and mix i.e. 4-string set with high-C and low-B to my tastes.
That's what I do with my 5 string as I string it with a high C and it works for me. Enjoy your £10 off! -
Nope, Standard '98 TBR6-II, 35" scale length. I hadn't tried standard length on this bass yet tho, from ur exp, sounds like they fit. For some reason I always forget about Ebay...
It's odd. Over the last year or so I have owned almost exactly the same gear as you. AH300-12 and a trace 4x10 along with the old Yamaha TRB around the same age (except mine is freltess and 5 string as you have probably noticed)... just thought I would point that out. Back to relevance - those indeed are the strings on my yamaha 35" now, so all should be well! -
Indeed, I DETEST Roto's, as much as I like supporting our own they don't work for me, despite many of my fav bassists using them, I hate the extreme feel to them and they seem to come with half tone and die fast, but thats me and my own skin Ph to blame. Tried Ernie Ball...whereas they are a good second they don't deliver like D'addario. I used to use Elites Stadium series until I got some that came with a touch of rust and started breaking. Warwick also tried all but black Label, the Red Label can cut through rock, never mind skin! and the Yellow label were...well...Never again. Even on my P-bass I've gone Prosteel, jus changed from my glass feel Nickel D'addario's to Pro-Steel, fancy a custom gauge tho. I'd love it if you could direct me where to get em for £24 tho, Ive been a customer of Stringsdirect for ages but feel the prices are going up too much considering you cut out the middleman.
This is where I buy mine - not exactly in the depths of cyberspace http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/D'Addario-EXL170...24091b0fa47e4ac These aren't extra long though... I don't think this is a problem however as these strings go fine on my 35" scale TRB and I'm assuming your TRB isn't a freak of nature 37" jobby? I have found them for around £26 incl. postage here http://www.soundsliveshop.com/p/D'Adda...s/DADD-EXL165-6 in case those ebay ones ever go out of stock for a while. Hope that helps P.S I can't agree with you more about Rotosound, all my heroes (apart from John Patitucci [D'addario]) play them but I just hate them! -
You need to watch out and make sure that the 'phones you buy are proper studio ones as the pair I recently bought I just sold as they sound almost as if there is constant octave effect - which in some respects is true (some bass frequencies are added) and for simply indulgent listening this is great, but sadly for bass practice or anything besides recreational listening it is pretty rubbish.
Dear God - look at the bass line up! http://www.discogs.com/Donald-Fagen-The-Ni...release/1468150
Holy crap! That's nice! and the Brecker Brothers too. I'm gonna have to give this a good ol' listen. Even though I don't listen to much metal any more the first track that comes to mind is Tool's Jambi, this Wal sounds like it's causing tectonic movement, nice. What's great is the fact that there are a 2 or 3 fantastic tones going. I had forgotten how much I love this talk box solo 5 minutes in mmmmm ...
Been using D'addario Pro Steels Extra long, gauge 30-130 (6-string) for maybe 4 years solid now. Not badly priced (£30 Stringsdirect), last a long time and theres tension to suit all needs. I use finger, slap, tap...whatever I need and catered my gauge for it: 30 - 45 - 65 - 80 - 100 - 130 Not too thick on the lower strings or they sound duff when tapped, yet on a 35" you dont need to worry about them flopping about. Might make the switch to DR LoRiders tho as these dont work so well on my most recent bass. Cost about £5-£10 more than D'addario's tho! :-O
Look around and you can get that set posted for less then £24, an absolute bargain! I've settled on D'addario strings now, they really are the sh*t! I think they utterly wipe the floor with Rotosound and Ernie ball etc. Mmm, I need some new ones. -
http://line6.com/community/message/111958 Summarised - basically plug it into the FX loop if your amp has one, I'm gonna try that now.
I've had the same kinda thing with my Bass POD XT Live. Just adore the sound I get from my rig and would ideally want to use the POD XT Live for the occasional effects (ie a bit of chorus, a bit of flange, perhaps the odd envelope filter) without it in any shape or form affecting the core tone. However, maybe it's all in my head but the moment I put the XT Live in the effects loop of the HD350, there's something "different" in the tone, even when I've dropped out all the amp modelling and EQ so that I've in theory just got effects in the patches. Am I missing something? T
That's what I was getting too, I'm having a tinker now and it seems to be sounding better. Bypass volume for the amp simulators like Dood said worked well, and also like he said the use of different output types (which is what I'm now looking at). But yeah, if there is a way to make the pod simply not effect your sound in any way unless you want it to, I want to know how to do it.
