The Bells catalogue was the first place I ever saw a Park Lead & Bass tranny head; lusted after one for a while & ended up getting the Marshall version - though they were nearly identical obviously.
Well , Bells weren't perfect!!! What a piece of crap those were - I had the Marshall for a while. It said 100w so I assumed it would be twice as loud as the Marshall 50w valve head I had. What a pillock !!

What is it with guitarists and 12inch drivers and 4x12 cabs?
Dr.Dave replied to Marvin's topic in Guitar Amplifiers
I once read an interview with Allan Holdsworth who claimed he could tell the difference in sound between and angled and a straight Marshall 4 x 12. I bet he's a riot to go for a pint with !! -
That's fantastic. Somewhere over the years my memory of the Bells Cat. had been erased but it's come flooding back. I remembered the address , I can even remember the smell of the pages. There was a Telecaster in one of the cats I had - I'd never even seen one in the flesh. Wondering now which was the best feeling - this middle aged muso with all the kit he could ever want or that young kid day dreaming.

Thankyou Mr Stop , most agreeable. I hope you spend the rest of your life laying on a carpet of fify pound notes surrounded by naked women offering you free beer and incredibly flithy sex. The amp price reflects my sincere wish for this amp to go back to work asap , which it loves doing. Happily , it appears it will be doing so as I have BCer coming to get it on Monday. The rack bag is likely on it's way to Manchester , where some sort of anthropoid character wishes to own it. I have interest too in the tuner - which is a DTR 1 model - and the 2 x 10. Nothing for the 1 x 15 - which is a shame because it definitely makes you more attractive to women. Or men. Or both - whatever floats your boat. Look just buy it then I won't have to keep thinking up gags !

Here's pics , as taken by our guitarist , bless his little plectrum , in his conserv.... consevat.... conservi.................. porch (!) last night. The gear will be back at my hovel tomorrow , so I can take any specific pics. I'll probably add more anyway because it'll be Sunday and I'll be bored ll day. I'll put these on different posts because I seem to have trouble loading multiple pics in one post , and I'll only lose my rag and punch the laptop if I try.

Up for sale is my whole current gigging rig - G K 400RB MkIV - most excellent condition having been rack protected - sold Korg Rack tuner - not the latest one (I'll update at the WE with the model number) - bought used in good condition and protected in the rack like the amp - on ebay Both are in a newish 3u rack bag , I forget the make - it will be 20 quid or so if anyone wants it but it's free to buyers of both the above. Ashdown ABM Compact 2 x 10 with switchable horn Ashdown ABM Compact 1 x 15 to match the above They've done a lot of work and the covering material has quite a few tears and nicks. If you want pristine look elsewhere. I'd describe them as road worn rather than tatty. sold You can walk away with the whole damn kaboodle for 500 of our British pounds - but not anymore because it's sold All this kit works 100% and has never let me down. Now.... No pics til the WE at least - my gear lives at the guitarists house and I won't get chance to photo it til Saturday night's gig. I'm tempted to insist on pick up only ( I live 2 easy miles from J39 of the M1 in Wakefield and I'm available during the day as well as evenings) ........BUT....... if that becomes a real issue I will pack the stuff best I can , which takes time , ready for the courier you organise to collect it. People here will tell you that I'm always willing to take a deposit to hold goods until pay day etc and that my buyers have always been welcomed and given more coffee and biccys than they can neck without throwing up.............. although one of them did as I recall !!!! I'm not skint. Far from it. So please don't take the piss offers wise because I don't need the money and I'll just tell you where to go. Fair? I'm buying a new rig and I don;t want to see this sitting idle , it deserves to be played as it has been - so buy it and use it.

I suppose many of the skills a drummer aquires are well handy when it comes to the style of bass playing Mark King's famous for. My hat's always doffed to the guy , not because of his undoubted skills as a bass player but more because of his profile raising of bass playing - How many players have begun because of him?. For me personally - he's a singer and songwriter whos plays bass playing is in support of those skills , which is how it should be. Level 42 were always too yuppy for me- too smooth - but fair play to them and him.

Playing bass wearing black silk gloves - for BETTER TONE
Dr.Dave replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I've been known to keep teasing the williams by saying there's a celebrity guest coming on later - then playing Hey Joe with a sooty puppet the wrong way round on my left hand. And I've played in fingerless wool mittens for a laugh But I think I'd rag silk gloves within seconds to be honest - you should see the state of sooty ! -
How come I never saw this thread before............. anyway I'm in 2 bands featuring the same 3 people - Mart on Drums , Rod on guitar and me on bass. We all sing lead vocals depending on who has the best voice to suit the song or , more simply , who can be arsed. One's a ZZ Top trib band , which is nice because we get to go all over and play bigger gigs than normal but I've never been truly happy about pretending to be somebody else - probably because , unlike most people I know , I've never wanted to be anyone else or had 'heros' etc. We're winding it down. Dr Blue is our pub band - it sort of morphed from a blues festival band into pub rock. Like my sig says - noisy guitars and swearing since 1999. We play most weekends but the Fri/Sat/Sun jobs are few these days. I'm the youngest at 50 and I just don't need the hassle. No idea how long we'll keep going but I'm sure we're nearer the end than the start.

I've 2 - a 73 and a 90something. No idea what strings are on them. The 90something might have flats on , can't remember. My finger ends are so dead they could be razor wire and I wouldn't know. I tend to use whatever brand/type strings folk give me for nothing !!

Well , you did ask 'should you' and my answer would be 'not in the type of gigs I play' - which is basically loud goodtime pub rock. Personally I find that the styles of music where bass soloing does fit better are not styles of music I enjoy very much. End of the day - if you're a craftsman/artist , have something to say and the best way you can think to say it is by playing a bass solo - go for it. Not quite a bass solo as such but....... years ago I used to come back on for the encore first , and while the rest of the band were putting on their instruments again I used to play through a couple of choruses of Ilkley Moor bah tat (Yorks connection etc etc). Then on the last note the band came back in. Punters loved it - but all they ever used to say to me was 'You're a great bass player , you did the Ilkley Moor bit - brilliant' etc etc. I used to ask them what else they'd remembered about what just I'd done for the best part of 2 hrs - needless to say they couldn't name a thing. So , for that reason , I stopped doing it. Just have a little think about that anecdote before you consider bass soloing

It's been tried on and we stamped on it in no uncertain terms - we actually refused to play at a venue because they wanted to pull that stunt. My own argument with them was a simple one - ' fair enough , you pay me fifty notes to sit at home watching TV and I won't play in your town that night.'

We've certainly turned a lot of trib band work down becasue it was midweek. Even Fri's can difficult as our drummer often works late. Guitar player's a retail manager so it's now his silly time of year - late night shopping etc. Of the three of us , I have it easiest by far. If we gig I can start work later the next day and never work later than standard office hours. No commute so I'm relaxed and ready come setting off time. Rod on the other hand arrives home at 6.15 , bolts a cup of tea on the fly , suit off , T shirt on and away 30 mins later without a sit down. Collects me about 7. Sometimes he comes straight to mine from work with the gear aready packed but - much as we try to ply him with food - he won't relax and only ever sips at a cup of tea. Mart arrives at a venue up to an hour after us and sometmes barly has tome to set the drums up. Happily, his son helps as our roadie.

For the next 3 days I'll only be adding to this thread by saying 'I didn;t have one'.You'd think I'd be glad of a weekend off but instead I'm already bored and the weekend hasn't started yet. I could go up to the local pub venue and watch somebody else play but that's being audience isn't it. I know it sounds daft but I've forgotten how to do that. I'll go to the pub with my mate then - and pretend I'm not jealous of all of you playing tonight and tomorrow. God knows what'll happen if my hands go - turn into a recluse I reckon.

Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker - because I just bought tickets to see the ballet at Sadlers Wells. Always wanted to go to Sadlers Wels.

What do you hate about certain basses you own or have owned ?
Dr.Dave replied to far0n's topic in General Discussion
Hate's a strong word - it's just personal preference really. I never liked Jazz Basses because they don't seem to hang right on me - they leave my hands in the wrong place. I've had a couple because they're fantastic sounding basses but couldn't get used to it and sold them. Ricks always nose dived in my hands - never owned one I was gutted to find that the G string not sounding properly on my Ray is a common Ray problem. I couldn't hear it at practise levels but at gig levels it's def. there. Everyone said when I moaned 'Oh - didn't you know that'. Like you have to part with a load of cash before anyone tells you !!! I sold it. Regarding the fix that someone's posted - fair enough if it works for you but I have a Bart Ray up on my Shuker and you can't dick with the pole pieces - no problem. I've heard the same pup on a Ray - problem. I think there's more to it than that. -
3 1 x 1973 3ts Fender Precision with Badass/QP/Schallers - had it for 34 years 1x 199something Blue Flower Fender Precision 54 reish with badass/QP - had it for 3 or 4 years - so the above can stay safely away from the manky toilets I play most weekends 1x Shuker custom - a posh and lightweight Stingrayesque jobby really - had it 5 or 6 years now Gone this last 12 months or so Status 3000 headless with Shuker top - missed but it wasn't earning it's keep Fender Fretless Precision - nice to have but just sat in the rack doing bugger all Epiphone Explorer - good riddance to bad rubbish , though it did earn me a shed load along the way.
