My problem with them is very real. Many years ago I was gigging in Preston with my old P and the g saddle collapsed against the bridge plate. The grub screws had given way. Further inspection showed some of the springs perishing too. I did a bit of pre internet research and came across badass. I'd decided already that if a bit of my bass broke I'd replace it with the best bit I could find and afford - so I bought one. Used Badass products on Fenders ever since and they've never let me down. I'd agree that stock Fender bridges are adequate - but I don't want to go on stage with something that's just adequate. I've certainly described Fender bridges as a bent bit of tin and I'm glad I'm shut of them.

Each to their own , tank de lawd , but I wouldn't be seen within 20ft of it while there's breath in my body!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm playing here in Wakey the night before which means I won't be getting dragged away anywhere for the WE. So I'm in unless an iffy looking date in Holland comes through. Let's say a good probable to be safe. Can I ask that nobody takes pics with flash , like last time , though. I don't give a bugger about the finish on my basses but it makes me look even thinner on top than I am!!!!!!!!!!
If I joined a proper tribute band, I'd consider getting the 'correct' bass. As long as it wasn't something I detested, anyway
Which is what I did - the EpiEx for the ZZ band. I try not to detest it !!! So far as the blues band goes - I'm just as likely to play my headless Status as a vintage Precision depending what I feel like. I'm not really bothered if it's the 'wrong' bass or what anybody thinks. End of the day , though , you play what you like to play for the job you do. If that means a shopping trip - go for it.

When is a Fender Jazz MIJ a CIJ or vive versa !!!!
Dr.Dave replied to Johngh's topic in Bass Guitars
When is a MIJ a CIJ ??? When it's for sale -
I want to get more work in on the fretless and introduce it more into the Dr Blue set - hoping too that the ZZ trib will continue to get more interesting and diverse work. Most of all - with the 3 of us not getting any younger and suffering various minor aches and pains from the rigours of gigging I hope we can keep up the enthusuasm and not give in to the pain. I'll tell you it gets harder and harder to get excited about carrying speaker cabs up a frozen fire escape.

I've only tried the one I have - the cheaper of the Korgs - and I wouldn't want to gig without it. If it's reliable and it works I can't see there'll be much difference between brands.

Just stick a bit of foam by the bridge and take the strap buttons off - sorted!!

I've been doing small gigs with an Ampeg B115 - the tube preamp version. I have a loud drummer and one loudish (insane Boogie combo) guitar to cope with. The Ampeg just about cuts the mustard if I give it more middle than I actually like. Funkmaster Dave uses a GK MB150 - mostly with it's dedicated extension cab - and his Warwick always sounds well against another noisy guitarist (insane Rivera - choice of 2!) , a quiet guitarist (Blues Jnr) and a quiet drummer. Hoping I might get to play my fretless through it at their gig tonight (grovel , crawl etc in case he's reading this!) The 'trouble' with combos to me is that if you get one large enough to gig with the bloody thing's heavier than going the small amp/cab route - which despite my efforts to prove otherwise has always been better for me.
They won't stay in some stands.
Most have 2 strap buttons on the arse end - they don't need to go in a stand. In fact I'm so impressed about that fact I often wonder why I don't do the same to my other basses.
i think they look a bit strange and dont have any protection for bashing the 'headstock' against peoples heads... ^_^
I don't get that at all The whole point is there's nothing there to bash against anything - I find them a boon on cramped stages and often make my choice as to which bass to take to a particular gig on that alone. Look at my Fenders and you'll see the evidence of banging into stuff - look at my pristine Shuker and see none , because I'm so careful about which gigs it goes to after my experiences with the Fenders - look at my headless Status and there's nothing to see , I've never once banged into anything with it. There's nothing to worry about beyond my hand. It travels in a guitar gig bag and is far more portable too. Never goes out of tune in a gig bag like my Fenders do due to the pegs turning either. I think , for a working bass player , a headless is a fantastic tool.
There's no possible way I'd buy anything from the scheisters at Music Ground, Leeds. Especially vintage instruments. PM 99ster.
I have to throw my hat in with Joe on this one - but if your dream bit of kit appears anywhere it's a hard call to stay principled. They are one serious bunch of smug hombres who stick telephone numbers on tatty old crap though. Be wary.

wal bass - are they really worth the premium?
Dr.Dave replied to blind pilot's topic in Bass Guitars
As ever - to make a decent 'jump' in quality from a £500 bass (which these days is already a pro's tool) doesn't cost £700. You need to go into the realms of very high build quality and then you're into personal choice. I think it's a mistake to assume that buying a Wal will make you sound like someone else you heard playing one and before I considered shelling out 2k on an instrument I'd try every 2k range instrument I could lay my hands on and see what feels/sounds/works best for you. That could well end up being a Wal - they are a wonderful instrument to play , and I've played plenty. They seem to hold their value well too which is not true of some high end basses (bar the vintage Fender market). A move to this quality is not a question of cost , though , but one of value - an investment not just in cash but in life interest. I'm ever mindful of the fact that of the 6 basses I own the two that earn me the most and - more important - get played the most are the two cheapest ones. Having said that - I find playing my vintage Fender or my handbuilt Shuker truly inspirational. -

Not relic'd, but very distressed
I rather like it as it is!
Me too. Funny thing this mojo lark - if I'd had it ages and it got that way by my hand I'd never sell it , but I don't think I'd want to buy one that already looks like that. And 2 grand?? No. -
That is a stunner condition wise , and nice to see one that's not sunburst !! Love to your Mum.
-
Not guilty - though I did think about it in the end and I reckon it represents good value to whoever bought it. I decided I have the Blueflower 54 reish doing essentially the same job so it would be unemployed with me so my only interest was in selling on my oldvintage neck , putting something cheaper on the bass and then selling that on.
-
That's seriously effing spooky. The picture, I mean.
Ha! When I wrote 'a previous incarnation ' on the file I meant the bass - turned out to be me !!
-
I wouldn't know how to put a price on it but I'm guessing a P or a J from that era would be worth the 360 the bass is currently selling for at least. Beedster's your man , he knows stuff like this , WOT maybe , probably others too if you can attract their attention to this forum. Prospective bidders on here could do worse than note there are 2 of us with personal knowledge of the bass and I'm happy to help if anyone has any Q's about the neck.

Just thought - I put Schaller M/C's on it - non- 'Fender' style of the type where you need to drill 2 small holes per M/C that the back plate drops into and the unit locks from the front with a screw collar. So - the 8 little holes are still there - though you'll never see them under the back plate of the new M/C's or any other M/C's you might want to put on it barring the tiny Schallers (M3's?? Not sure what you call the small ones) that look daft on a Fender anyway. Oh - and if the nut's brass (don't think it is) my Dad made it for me and I'll pay you to get it back. Here's the file on it from my documents though the neck is only in the old shot on the right. Christ , did my hair really used to be dark!!!
-
Jesus H Christ - I swear this is true and I only just noticed and checked. That was my neck. It came off a 72 Telecaster bass - humbucker version. I recognised it because of the 2nd string guide which I did and folk who know my attitude to Fender basses know it's a trademark of mine to do that. I just checked my records and that's the serial number of mine right there on the 3 bolt plate. The Hipshot wasn't me , in fact I sold the tuners seperately. It's a pretty chuncky neck - I remember it well. It had zero issues when it left me.I traded it in a deal with a local music shop here in Wakefield I would think getting on for 10 years ago. I bet a local vintage guitar type called Dixie had it off them as part of another deal. If one of us buys it I have pics of the neck on the original bass I can mail you.
-
I like it. The hole's a bummer but either replace the pickguard or don't bother. Looks fine without. Can't think of a rational reason for this - but it seems a strange instrument to put a de-tuner on to me. £360 at the mo. 70's neck. Decent bridge. Good players Fender to my eyes at that price or even a bit more.
After Saturday's gig I've decided to get a bandana. I'll see how much sweat that manages to keep out of the eyes. Does that qualify?
Well , you either wear a bandana / headband or spend the entire gig with your eyes screwed up and your face hideously contorted in pain. So you get to look like Mark Knopfler either way !!
-
Strikes me that it's a simple case of uploading the wrong photo - white body? Rosewood board? Checking out Music Ground's other items for sale reveals that to be true. The MM that the pic is of is £979 on a BIN The daft sods have also used the same pic to advertise a Cort 'Warwick style' bass !!!!
-
2 hats at once - if you count the bandana. Folk ask me why I wear a bandana - I tell them the truth , it's cheaper than hair dye.
