A good sound engineer should be able to recognise the most appropriate place to take the DI from by looking at the bassist's rig.
and a better one would make that suggestion to the player and ask for his comments !!!!

Both - variety , spice of life etc. Even nylon tape wounds from time to time. Whatever I get bought for Xmas really !! Only time I ever change strings is Xmas day because there's bugger all else to do!
Having grizzled about bad PA people, I'd now like to publically big-up our regular soundman Peter Malarkey, as well as Tony Bianco (Italian Tony), and Phil Munt of Showtec who've worked with us before at our own gigs and some of the festivals/rallies we've played. I'd recommend these guys very highly indeed.
I doubt you'll need them in the tiny World's End, Knaresboro next week - saw your name on a poster . I just warmed them up for you - have fun!!

Mine live in a floor standing rack in the back bedroom but there's always 2 on hangers as the rack in;t big enough for them all. The 2 are a Strat and A N Other bass depending which I happen to be diddling with at the time. I don't use dedicated wall hangers - I got a card containing 12 assorted hooks and hangers covered in red plastic from the pound shop - I use 2 of them - screwed into a plastic wall plug. So they were just over 8p each !! I've got my guns on them too - on the wall in the hallway - never had a faller yet.
how long did it take for you to find a photo of dusty hill playing the same bass you have?
Who? Actually the real problem was finding one of him wearing a £9.99 Timex from Argos!! -
It'll be the same Tony. I believe he was visiting family back home a few weeks ago. ARGH and others know him as well. No, not worked with those guys you mentioned. I should point out that many others have done a reasonable job and been fine to work with but the guys listed were outstanding.
Well , he's in my mobile as a result of the Skipton debacle and great to have a recommendation.
Actually a photo of me I like...!
Most folk dislike pics of themselves. You think you look strange. That's because you never see yourself but often see your reflection in a mirror and you think that's what you look like. Wrong - it's a mirror image. Pics show you as the rest of the world sees you. This is me a couple of weeks back and about an hour later !!! -

We were stuck in a cattle market in Skipton t'other week with Limehouse Lizzy , a lighting crew and no PA.Someone with the Limehouse set up caused a mix up that left the event sans PA and scuppered the gig. At one point we got a tip to try calling a bloke called 'Italian Tony' - sadly he couldn't help because he was in Italy. I thought it was so funny - ringing a number and asking to speak to 'Italian Tony' - sounds like a scene from Layer Cake or something. Ever used/worked with Dave Nutbrown and/of Starsound? - highly recommended.
PA operators usually want you to use their DI because they are (to them) a known quantity. Many heads (not GK) it seems do not have a good DI output. Some are unbalanced, some just noisy - levels are all over the place from unit to unit. They just want a signal they can use at the desk for the entire show. If you want more control , take your own DI - maybe a microphone too. But you'll get a better reaction if you take BSS/Radial... DI boxes and Shure/Audix/AKG... mics.
Agreed , in general - but I have found that though many PA hire ins use good amps/speakers/mics etc they have 10 quid DI boxes that are certainly no better than your average amp DI.
Alas.. gone are the days!! Very true though.. it is a piece classic damage.. done it myself. Well it was tremendously cool to have your burning tab poked in behind the string.. wasn't it??
I often shove an empty pack of 'Nicotinel' in there at gigs - gets a knowing laugh from some and bemusement from many!!
-
I've never understood why some PA crews , usually hire ins , insist on using DI boxes - generally pre-EQ - when just about every modern bass amp or players rig has a perfectly good DI. Homer and Russ will recall my woes at the Colne festival. The crew used a phantom powered DI box ,splitting the signal before it got to the generic , hired in Ampeg rig - and shot the whole 48v into my brand new Shuker , frying it's EQ , happily not frying me. I simply don't allow it now - even with passive boxes. They either take a DI signal from my GK or they can stick a mic in front , option c being I'm off home. That said - I still think my open letter to sound guys would include 'Thanks for your help - hopefully we'll have more time to chat next time about how we can , together , make for a better show.' Before you judge a man - walk a mile in his shoes * - I suspect many PA crews have a nightmare with some bands , their unrealistic demands and cocky attitude. End of the day - the sound man often gets the blame for stuff he'd no control over. * - then if you still hate the bastard , you're a mile away and you've got his shoes!
Agreed, this is my preferred option but the last bit they often struggle with. Of course this is for shared gigs only; on our own gigs Pete is an absolute star behind the desk and is at least as important as us 4 on stage.
Maybe the answer's to agree to the shared gigs only if Pete can mix , or at least assist in mixing , your sound.
I agree but when you only have 1x guitar, bass and drums I really do need more than just thump, especially during guitar solo/intros etc.
Same set up for us - I never really have a problem , I take a post eq DI (from my amp - I don't trust their DI boxes) and tell them to flat line it and leave it the f**k alone.
-
We're all protective of our little fifedoms. I understand the frustrations here 100% - I've had a few myself - a sound crew could have killed me once BUT how many of us would like to tell the sound crew they should spend more time on the drummers monitors or getting the guitar sound right? More likely we're just standing our own corner , I think. If the overall sound's good - that's good enough for me to be prepared to compromise. The music as a whole is more important than my bass sound.

I agree with Burrito. They lose their advantage over Fender pups the higher up the Fender pup scale you go , and for many the improvement over GOOD stock Fender pups may not be worth it , but if your F pups are crap or you're building from scratch - get the Duncan's in there. Fender - Duncan -Badass - leave me alone , I'm happy!!!
the Shuker was sublime. Big range of tones available from it, and very easy to play, lovely bass. Good score that one Al, I really hope you can find the tone you want from it, because it's a cracker.
Hmmm......... does this suggest you're not finding the tone you want from the Shuker Al or is it me putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 5?? It does look a cracking bass - with the amount of control over tone it appears to have from the number of pots and 2 pups I imagine it's in there somewhere - it took me a while to find 'my' tone on my Shuker and I only have half the pots and switches you have. With it being quite a refined , smallish instrument I struggle to use it as a hammer. I fear the basic truth is it's too subtle for me. I gives me no end of joy at home , just having it in my hands pleases me , but under battle conditions I just want to hit things so it tends to loose out to the reish single coil P and the Shukerised Status - the latter having such silly massive bottom end I miss it when it's not there. At some point in the near future I'll get stage 2 of the Status upgrading done - side LED's and smoother working pots .Daft as it seems that will pretty much make the Shuker redundant so far as my current types of gig goes.

Thunder always struck me as the most famous pub band in the world - they'd jump on stage looking like they just turned out of the saloon bar to an intro tape of AC DC music - but folk loved them for it. Good band I thought.

When I were a nipper , buying a second combo of the same type as your first seemed quite a poular way of beefing up for bigger gigs but the idea seems to be old hat now. I did it myself quite successfully for a few years - sometimes having one combo either side of the drum kit. At the time I lifted the earth wire in one of them and it stopped a fair bit of the extra hum (I marked the earth lifted cables) - although I wouldn't suggest for a second that anyone do this - I'm just not qualified to say it's safe or otherwise.
