In the name of Satan's portion , his fella knows how to pack a guitar. Should you buy one from him - as I just have - expect to spend an hour with a JCB before you can even see it - but sleep soundly knowing your new pride and joy will arrive safe as houses. Exeptional packing job , Steve. Great guy to be dealing with - so don't hesitate to do so.
Ruby IS a rather beautiful and playful Rottweiler  . She kept Mrs T occupied for the hours I was at Jons discussing wood etc
Which is odd because I left Mrs Doc chatting with Jon while I played with Ruby!!

I think he means - or hope!! - the bones that Ruby has finished chewing on rather than her skeletal ones!
Hows about this - the prefect solution would be a zero fret - hence the open string note should sound the same as any other - simple eh?
I've always thought that . As Alex says , maybe there's a degree of damping from the other frets from nice , fleshy fingers but if you choose a string with a silk(ish) wrap around the peg end maybe there's a bit from there too. I certainly think a zero fret solves - by eradication - any other issues like string height through the nut , poorly cut nuts , poorly seated nuts etc. Zero fret for me...................except I haven't got any....... except for the Status which is headless so would work pretty badly without one!

A synth is often thought of as an electronic keyboard instrument that makes weird noises as well as replicating the sound of traditional instruments. Understandable as the marriage of a synth with a keyboard to trigger it's sounds inside one 'box' is -probably - the most widely used and convenient form of a synth. In fact , a synth is a box of electronics and it's sounds can be triggered by almost anything. Drum pads , guitars , basses , footpedals , wind instruments etc.

It's a 715SM model - 130w into it's internal 15" 4 ohm speaker though you can disconnect that and use the 2 speaker outs if you wish. 7 band graphic - 2 pre shapes - eq balance - graphic in/out/level - DI out pre or porst eq - effects send/return - line out - gain with overload light - active/passive input switch - master vol . I put casters on it too. It's not new by any means but it's in pretty good nick - no nasty rips and tears or general scabbiness. I bought it for a bedroom practise amp about 2 years ago from a fellow BCer and haven't used it much - now I don't use it at all because I bought a Fender Blues Jr and that does the 'at home' job fine. It's taking up too much bloody space , simple as that , and I'm trying to downsize the amount of stuff in chez nous. In fact if you show up and there's anything on the floor in my hallway that means it's being slung so you can have it!! No issues whatsoever that I'm aware of - and the guy I bought it from is a trusted mate and I'm sure he'd have said if there were any he knew of. It's pick-up only from Wakefield - 2 miles easy find from M1 J39 - I work from home and I'm always around. It's £130 - and it's now SOLD I might be interested in the following trade bits. Badass2 - Tort Jazz pickguard - jazz quarterpounders - fender machines - Boss ME20 or 50 guitar FX....maybe......MAYBE...... a physically smaller practise combo. I'd straight swap it for a BLX 130 or 80. Of course I'll wait til pay day , so long as it's not the one in October etc !!! Paypal if you must , cash or cheque better , those Euro's left in the sports wallet you take on holiday that's at the back of your sock drawer are fine too at the rate of 1.10/£1 Yes , of course you can play with the Shuker or the vintage Fender in the (pretty duff) pic. In fact I put them there to tempt you. My much despised EpiEx is in the gig bag behind - if you nicked it I doubt I'd bother chasing you!!

Status bass - upgrade wood neck to graphite ?
Dr.Dave replied to Jambo63's topic in General Discussion
You mention too about refinishing the body so this may be of interest. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...&hl=Dr.Dave -
I have to admit that I haven't fiddled with the mid control either, I really ought to give it a go. Any idea of the frequency range? BTW I had elixirs fitted to both my Ibbys....hated them, the coating flaked off in no time flat.
Not a clue - Jon started explaining it to me but I got bored and went and played with his dog. I heard that Elixirs last a player about 3 times as long as his or her normal brand strings last - which in my case means I won't have to change them til I'm 148. Must say they've been bang on to press , no flaky coatings or anything.
<edit> Some string suggestions would be appreciated. I'm using Bass Boomers at the minute, they're about 15 months old.
Just nicely broken in, then You could try a set of groundwounds - not as dark as flats but getting there. I've got Elixirs on my Shuker , which is 3 band - generally I have the mid flat and boost the bass a fair bit and the treble a bit less. Mine's more of a posh Stingray though. In the depths of the control cavity there's another pot which allows you to adjust/set the frequencies that the top side mid pot affects. I haven't messed with mine - because I can't be bothered to be honest - but if your EQ's similar it might be worth a twiddle.
-
Pete , I take your point about alu coned drivers but I think a bit of eq experimentation costs nothing and will probably chill your tone out to near where you want it. I go through periods of finding my Shuker too bright , too middly , whatever. I just pick up another bass for a bit and appreciate the different sounds rather than seeing some of them as unsuitable if you catch my drift. Someone suggested string changing - there's another good call , easy and cheap - massive difference
-
Pete - if your Shuker's anything like mine bare this in mind. Because the bridge is made up of individual saddle pieces screwed to the wood rather than the conventional bridge type where the saddles rest on a plate , Jon has to find a different way to 'earth' all 4 strings. A wire taken to the g saddle only earths the g string. To get round this he puts a brass shim in with a bone nut , then the earth path runs up the g string to the nut and back down the other 3 strings. In your case , if you have a brass nut fitted , it's doing the same job. So - if you replace it with a bone nut alone you've broken that earth path. Just something worth your consideration.

Plenty of folk in these parts have a Mex F and are very happy - partic those who've stuck some wizard (or similar) pups in it. The chrome plating can be a bit thin and the insert in the back of the neck can be a bit proud but if you find one without these issues that feels good to you - why not. Fenders are so easy to upgrade over time should you wish to.

The first amps I had were both Marshalls but after those I used Carlsboro amps for years - Cobra's , Stingray's etc with mostly home built cabs but eventually Trace Elliot's appeared and seemed to be very serious about making good quality kit for bass players. I jumped in with both feet and was very happy with Trace. I changed model a couple of times and one day - like a fool - traded my aging series 6 kit for a new , furry combo. Piece of s**t. Mistake from day one. Poor build , cheap electrics. I tried a GK micro combo and liked the sound and that got me started on GK. That became a 400 RB amp and I'm on my third now. First was traded for an Eden rig - too Hi Fi and fiddly for me so I went back to a 400RB and got the third when the Mk4 came out. I had 2 rigs for a while and one was powered by a Hartke 3500 which got nicked along with the massive Ashdown abm cab I'd bought only a few weeks earlier. The cab had me sold on Ashdown abm cabs though and I've used them ever since for their combination of sound , price and particularly build quality. I'm not after a huge rig power wise. I don't like twiddling knobs to get a good sound and I hate it when stuff breaks. Personal opinion but I think many speaker cabs are hugely overpriced (maybe because amp makers know folk like to have cabs that 'match' the amp). I don't get too excited about 'black boxes' at all - they do me a job , end of. I get excited about instruments but so long as backline kit works and is unfussy I'm happy.
Yeah, just joking there - I wouldn't have the brass neck
Is that the pre CBS brass neck?? I'll sell you one. James Jamerson gave it me and Jaco wrote 'this was mine - honest' on it in felt pen. 5 grand to you , pal , and I'm cutting me arm off One serious point - when I went to stay with my mate in NZ , he has a 1950's tele which he paid the world for. The switch button wasn't an original though so rather than buy his wife a bunch of flowers for having me etc I got him the real deal off ebay. It was only 15 USD but it sort of illustrates one of the points made here as it's made his pride and joy all original - at least in a period sense. Me. Well , I sold the chrome knobs off my 73 on ebay for nigh on seventy quid. They were jacobsed , that's why I sold them. I got nice new ones from Q parts for a fiver. I was happy - doubtless the buyer was happy - but I'd rather be my kind of happy !!!
I posted about this guy in the overpriced listings thread, but it seems that his first attempt has been cancelled. I might just list a screw from my '74 P bass at a bit below his asking price, just to wind him up.
Brilliant idea and very tempting , but I think we'd be better off just ignoring this kind of thing. Here in the real world we can come on these forums and talk about playing and gear and crack nob gags. Guys like this belong in another world that has little to do with any of that.

Where is it written that a particular type of music has to have a particular type of bass sound requiring a particular instrument. This is 2009. Music develops as time goes by , so do instruments and sounds. If you play the instrument you like you've more chance of creating good music. Besides - don't most modern basses have tone controls??
-
I'd happily hawk round for a used squier Jazz with a comfy feeling neck , bung some wizards in it and go do the gig. With the first gig's money I'd get myself a badass for it and never look back. I don't find a Jazz body that comfy but for the purposes of this thread I should think anyone could do any gig they were asked to with a bass like that.
I'd like to think of myself as a musician first and bass player second.
You'll do for me - my thoughts exactly.

Practise scales and technique regularly Don't compete with the guitar player Never , ever show off ................ are three things totally alien to me!!!!!! I just go for it , Al. Where there's a hole - I'll fill it. The basics can be very easy and I stick to those til we've done a new tune 2 or 3 times then I just let it develop. If I cock something I do it in the next verse too and everybody thinks it was deliberate. Eventually Martin and I click with the drum bass fills and the song works. If it doesn't sound like anyone expected we care not a jot. Do not be afraid to roll your own , it's very easy for the bass player in a blues band to be the forgotten man at the back. That doesn't suit me and from what I know of your guitar playing history and entertainment/enjoyment factor it won't suit you either. I think this could put a smile back on your face which will put smiles on your audiences faces too. That's the job. That's how you do it in the venues you'll likely be playing. I'm not making a gag of this and in no way trashing the sensible comments of others - I just think you could really shine at this if you don't play it too safe and treat your mistakes as a learning process with a wry smile at yourself.

What gear is at the harrogate bass bash ?
Dr.Dave replied to david_l_perry's topic in General Discussion
Surely everybody's who's interested has already had a dibble on my Shuker so I reckoned those of you bringing sunglasses would prefer the shame of a possible pic of yourself playing my Blue Flower Fender !!! Might bring the Shukerised Status too as I'm desperate to have it pointed out to me that the pots feel a bit dodgy when you twiddle them. Unless anyone would rather I substitute one of those for the 73P so you can all see how to devalue 2 grands worth of bass by simply upgrading the crap bits!! -
I've no beef with short scale instruments or their players but I'm less convinced that a 'travel' bass in a shorter than 34" scale would be of much help to 'regular' scale players. I should think most would take a bass on hol. or similar for practise purposes and where's the point in practising on a bass that's so different to your usual one?? Something along the lines of a Hohner B2 is cheap to find used and is 34" scale - that would be more use to me. If scale length is to be sacrificed by players who normally play 34" for the sake of portability - why not go the whole hog and get an Ashbory?? Just my opinion - I'll be just as interested to see what Prosebass comes up with but I'd be thinking of it as a full time , portable instrument rather than a part time 'travel' one.
Well said, that man! To take the cliche several stages further, I'd say they're not just the dog's danglies, but in fact the whole dog, his mother, father & entire genetic lineage as well!
Mine's non-canine metaphoric but is the chocolate starfish of a feline domestic quadroped.
