1. I don't think Mike has feedback here but happy to say I know him personally and he's a top guy to deal with.
 2.
STICKER Can I have JON (maybe in brackets) as well - I never really use my Avatar name and I'll forget who I'm supposed to be!
I see you're playing at the Crimea tonight - in which case you won't need a name sticker as we'll all recognise you from the full body cast and wheelchair !!!!! However - 2 of us that have survived the Crimea - allbeit as bitter, broken men will be along to the bash and will both need a STICKER (Dr) Dave and (Funkmaster) Dave
 3.
iv seen them before, but they look really, really bright. Anyone used them before to comment? id love to have blue side led's fitted to my status neck
Thinking much the same I emailed Sims and asked. If I sent them the neck off mine (graphite bolt-on) they'd install side LED's and send it back leaving me to make 2 simple solder connections and route a battery wire (supplied) into the control cavity - can't remember if a switch was included but the batery clip was. £180 they said.
 4.
I have got to see your ZZ top band Doc. Is Dr Blue involved in the Colne festival this year? Why don't you go in a new direction Al? Dub reggae? Metal? You could wear a wig.
Not sure about Colne. We were at the Limelight Club in Crewe last Sat and will be there again later this year. We're doing the Hark to Towler , Bury way too. When I get dates for those or dates for anything else within a non silly driving distance of Stockport I'll let you know. Come to think of it - anywhere in Stockport good for us to try???
 5.
Thread will be locked IMMEDIATELY on the first appearance of a jellied eel or pearly king.
Do what? Not many ahncle - here's a fing I fahnd in the lock aaaaaaap http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Diner/2674/chash_b.htm Showing the Chas Hodges is also a bass player and had an interesting bass playing career with a lot of interesting musicians before deciding that 'this nahmbers for the Queen Mam and the twins dahn the slammer gawd bless 'em'.
 6.
I'll probably end up in some sad classic rock embarassment
Works for me
 7. I think it's too much on the fingerboard but I quite like the body inlays. I don't like the bass much , like it's built from spares , but I like the body.
 8.
Thanks a million Cameron - I've been in touch with them already. I'll keep you posted.
Tip for ,Alan, you re. the blues band should you go and have a play with them......... It's in 'A' I thought it might come to this - you've sounded very peed off of late re. the band. As you say it's a bloody shame. Hope you get sorted out soon , matey.
 9. Good old Vintage and Rare. I'm sure they , and their like , are responsible for some of the unrealistic telephone numbers we see on 'vintage' basses in our classifieds. One sure fire way to not sell your bass is to use V and R's prices as a guideline to set yours.
 10.
Is that you then?
Ha! Top marks for deduction and cynicism but no - I've nothing for sale nor am I pointing you towards friends of mine or similar. I just think a Fender style bass is a great 'improver' instrument and could easily end up being all you'll ever want. Bare in mind too that resale is easy with a Fender should you wish to trade up later. I'm a great believer in breaking rules - but in order to break a rule it helps to know it first , if you catch my drift. A Fender is the absolute 'reference' instrument in that respect.
 11. Just to act as a bit of a champion for the Fender cause............... Folk have been using Fender Jazz and Precision basses for 50 ish years to make every form of music imaginable. You're perfectly entitled to think every single one of them is wrong but - if I were you - I'd figure that with only a few weeks experience I'm not yet in a position to say that. So - dull looking as you may find them - seriously consider a Fender style instrument as a good 'reference' and workhorse as you begin your journey. Doesn't have to have the magic F on the headstock as there are many quality copies available. Having said that a used Mexican made Fender P or J is certainly within your budget and a look at the classifieds here should soon sort you out. I think you'll find the likely seller here is honest, helpful and knowledgeable.
 12.
I think I bought yours. It is still going strong (has an extra pickup in it now of course) and sounds wonderful.
Yes , I remember. You posted a pic with the 'sheeanesque' additions!! It makes me really happy it's still getting played.
 13.
I built this when I was 13/14, with no experience of woodwork or using power tools at all You should see the neck pocket routing.......
I just about made the Tirpitz out of a plastic kit at that age - don't knock the neck pocket - that's a fantastic achievement.
 14. When 'Funkmaster' Dave and I went to visit Jon we both played 2 artists that were in stock - maybe they were orders , not sure. One had the schertler pup system , the other piezo. We were both impressed with both basses and Dave esp. was knocked out by the tone of the schertler one. He'd just bought a Jack Bruce Warwick fretless or I think he'd have had to be dragged away.
 15. I used one of these for years - fantastic bass. I sold it to part finance the Shuker and missed it so much I ended up buying a 3000 which is very similar. Somebody buy it and put it to work.
 16. It's def. a Mex - with the upgrades I doubt you'd get what you wanted for it so if the neck's good I'd keep it and love it.
 17. There's folk a lot dafter than Lysdexia driving around in Rollers because they knew how to advertise things in an eye catching way. Dude likes to photgraph pretty girls holding quality basses - all power to ya , I say. I've always wanted a 70's sunburst/rosewood fretless - no secret there. Price is out of my league , sadly , but it looks stunning to my eyes. Hope somebody here buys it and floods the gear porn section with pics.
 18.
Me too. I will be at the Black Swan jazz night next Wednesday (and more Wednesdays than not for that matter). I have an Ibanez BTB555 - so you know which one is me All the best, Nick
We do the Black Swan a couple of times a year. it's my 'nemesis' gig - always seem to hurt myself when we play there. Not really a room for a blues/rock band but fun. Welcome bumfrog - more the merrier , I say.
 19. I'm certain I have a problem in both ears. They feel like they're blocked - like when water's in them post-shower - all the time. There's no gunk in there , used drops and had them syringed. The result is I can hear my own voice too loudly and I've started speaking so quietly to compensate that folk can't hear me. I had a lot of problems scuba diving a few years ago - think it stems from that. I know I should go see the quack but I'm a bit scared he'll tell me to stop playing. I'm not the trusting bloke when it comes to medical types anyway. When I bust my knee climbing mountains the doc said 'don't climb any more mountains then'. Brilliant.
 20.
Can they call it a "Bad ass" bridge? and the price?
If my name was Mr Quan and I lived in a posh house I'd get my chauffeur to drive me round to Mr Gibson's even posher gaff and punch him in the gob. That or get the Badass packaging to read 'if you take a hammer to this it'll drop straight in and replace the piece of sh*te you'll find on your Eppifone or Gibbsun'. I've always like Tbirds but prefer to admire them from afar rather than wrestle them myself.I have to say the sound and build quality of my Epi Explorer is great - no issues at all with it. It's a pig to play but horses for courses etc. As has been said moving the strap button around can help a lot but it means taking the drill to your pride and joy which is a bit rubbish. I shifted the bottom one on mine rather than the neck one and it's about 6 inches in on the back of the body. Moves the whole thing to my right so at least I can reach the first fret. That's an explorer though so not sure why I said it!
 21. No idea on that one matey - I suppose a furniture upholsterer might be able to do it but you can do a Blue Peter on it yourself I should think. The covering should be easy enough to get hold of.
 22. I have a reliced P It was fine when I got it but I've dragged it around the circuit for 30 years and now it's buckle rashed , chips out of it , worn through where my forearm and ribs go etc. I wish these had been around when I bought mine. All that fun and memories , not to mention all the money I made - I could have saved myself all that bother and sat at home watching the telly.
 23. a 4 string bass may sound different to a 5 string bass of the same brand/style. Wether that difference is better or worse is in the eye of the beholder. End of discussion. Next.
 24.
Having always used a pick, I've been playing w. fingers the last couple of months. Someone said pick for speed, fingers for tone; never realised how true. BTW, my pick's a large, triangular heavy 1.4mm gauge Gibson, sprayed with nitro-cellulose for a 50's 'Kalamazoo' look then 'reliced' with wire wool to increase adhesion and add 'Vintage Mojo'. The LH edge is pre-serrated for string scrapes, while RH edge is slightly filed back for false harmonics. It's also been split, chambered with a router then re-assembled to reduce mass without compromising its size. 0-20 notes per sec in under 0.3 of a second, guys! Played with the (modern style) Gibson logo facing the thumb for extra grip as recommended by Carol Kaye in her evergreen classic "1001 Pick-holding Methods for Modern Jazz, Blues and Rock". I'd be very interested to see any other BC-ers modded or vintage picks, and any interesting or humourous 'pick anecdotes'.
When I decided to be God I recall blowing your local pub up. I didn;t think at the time how much harm this may cause you. I've just had it rebuilt so for Christ's sake get out and get down there
 25.
Only gays use picks.
Funnily enough when I use one I retain the 'limp wrist' right hand position!!! I can't see this thread even as a debate. You use whatever technique you're comfortable with to make the sound you want to make - the more techniques the merrier. Hopefuly nobody will start a 'what guage of pick?' thread - if so, may I encourage everyone to trash it !!!! Liking the sound of the new set , Alan. Hope it's perked you up a bit - you sounded a bit down about the band a few weeks back. Good thing to keep moving. I would have thought in your case - being an acomplished pick player from your guitar days - it'd be criminal not to use one. Fill your boots , my son.
