1. Dr D's fave mantra - buy the bass that feels right in your hands - anything else can be sorted with a screwdriver , a soldering iron and a spray gun. Applies just as much to your first bass as your fiftieth. I'd also advocate leaning towards classic , simple designs as a new bass owner. So I'm talking Jazz , Precision or Stingray styles. Of course you may want something different and whacky as your experience develops - but you can only break a rule if you know it first. If you took everyone who posts here off the forum if they didn't own one of these 3 design types there'd be about a dozen members left I should think. That says a lot to me.
2. In prep for the ZZ trib I went and bought a keyboard/workstation and spent ages programming it. We experimented with various triggers and monitor systems for the drummer , click tracks etc........ Then thought bollox to it - and just went and did it anyway. Obviously it depends on how 'authentic' you want a song to sound but I'd say stick with the impressionist school , as we have. BTW - Hammer to fall , esp as a set opener - difficult to better it. Plus you can melt it into One Vision halfway through - sounds brilliant. Did it with a covers band I was in for a while.
3. I think there must be one of us who could get a good job of work out of this bass by using it in some of the more colourful toilets we're asked to play in and leaving 'the precious' at home. It's a job my Blueflower is doing for me , or I'd have it like a shot.
4. We're on at Rudi's bar in Rotherham in a couple of weeks , our blues rock band supporting our ZZ Top trib - come see us!
5.
I think you're right Dave, I wanna play the blues now, life's hard and I'm hoytin'
You're doing our job mate - the great gigs will be greater because of the downers. If you wanna play some blues........I'm always happy to go have a pint and let you ,do what you want with the bass and rig but don't touch my mic stand beer holder !!
6.
Another dreary gig last night - unattentive, unappreciative largely male crowd - men don't seem to enjoy soul as much as women.
I think that's the problem , Alan. Women love it - so the blokes are suspicious of the band. Seen it lots with soul bands. We've been known to slot Mustang Sally and Take me to the River in to get the girlies going , and the blokes change atitude straight away.
7. You could sell them on saying Amy Winehouse had sneezed on them !!!
8.
I'm in a similar position. Perhaps we could help each other out here. How about: You don't send me anything and I'll exchange that with nothing? I should point out that my end of the trade is zero-rated VAT AND it's free post and packing. Complete bargain. Must be Christmas.
That sounds a good deal but it's complex. Tell you what - the 2 of you bang me a 20 spot apiece and I'll do the legwork for you!!!
9. To be serious I've never really found this to be a problem with musicians BUT I find it often with punters and partic with wannabe's. The average punter hasn't a clue what the difference is other than the other guy takes the solos and we don't. Similar thing - I sing about 40% of our sets , the guitarist about 60%. He's refered to amongst the punters as the guitarist in Dr Ble and I'm talked about as the singer. Interesting.
10.
Fortunately I don't play with any guitarists with those attitudes. But if I did, I'd just say 'Here, you try' and hand them the fretless.
Careful - I did that once and the little sh*t played it better than me
11.
Thanks guys, if this U2 tributey thing doesnt come off, she'll be up for sale.
Tell you what - I'll have that Jazz and do your U2 trib You can have my false beard and Epi Ex and do my ZZ trib Can't say fairer than that , chief
12. I'd just like to say. If Big Al reckons that GK amps are crap , Precisions are rubbish and both my bands are sh*te...........well , mate , that's fine by me!!!! I can highly recommend these 'micro' bashes. There were a few more of us at the Yorks one a bit back but the smaller numbers increase the opportunity to play such a diverse range of gear - and learn both why it's owners chose it , and how it stands up to their requirements. That's reason enough alone to cancel everything and get along toot suite. The pot of gold attached includes getting to chat with real folks , of all shapes , sizes and musical interests - all sharing the same core interest. It's far , far more than 'look at me , I've got one of these etc'. Hats well and truly doffed to all that help organise these events , and long may they continue.
13. I'm so loving that. I had a 69 - same colour scheme but mojo'd to the point of trashed. Got it cheap - sold it dear , so there's a result. Something about me won't let me ever get truly comfy with a Jazz. It's the Jazz body shape for sure - along with my body shape. I look at this though and feel like having a few ribs removed so I can have one. Look at the forearm wear - it's alive , that bass. Like an old bloke in the pub telling the tale ! Top pic goes on my desktop for a while - it's currently me and my EpiEx and I'm bored with it.
14. These guys sell Fender parts and the like - and know that there's no point in bullshitting us with eye catching adverts!!! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-USA-1962-Reis...A1%7C240%3A1318 Keep scrolling down..........and BOTH HANDS ON THE KEYBOARD or I'll tell your Mothers!!
15.
Haha what was it?
A gator pedal case - it was a quid with a minute to go and I bid a fiver , but bidder one must have had a high bid in - went for 16.
16. I'm about to - i think. I'll let you know in 8 min 52 secs!!
17. I was in and out of a band years ago that did loads of AC/DC. They're still at it and good mates of mine. Massive DC fans. They told me not to bother with the new DC album and check out this lot instead. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=67T56ke2ywA
18. Enjoy. What bass or basses are you using? We'd like to know all about them - either in the 'gear porn' section or the 'bass guitars' section.
19. You mean 400 euro for the Hartke and the Ashdown? I think that's a good deal - and I do understand you wanting to buy new gear rather than second hand. I think for that money the cab is likely to be from Ashdown's MAG range rather than ABM. It won't be built that strongly so you'll have to treat it well. Hartke amplifiers have quite a 'clean' sound to my ears but there's nothing wrong in that if you like the sound.
20. Is it just me - or has this turned into a premiership dressing room team talk? BTW , mate , yes - the amplifier section of your combo is designed to deliver it's max output into a 4 ohm load. That's achieved with 2 x 8ohm cabinets - or , in your case , connecting one 8 ohm cabinet while using the combo's internal 8ohm speaker. Don't connect a single 4ohm cabinet to the combo's amplifier section unless you unplug the combo's internal speaker first (make your connections while the amplifier is switched off) Otherwise there may be a sudden loud noise followed by a much longer period of silence! Old , red stripe Trace gear - loving it.
21. Out of interest - if Prosebass can fret the bass , or add fret lines at such reasonable cost , couldn't the dots be shifted too if the buyer wished them to be in actual fret positions?
22.
I bet he knows how to spell bespecled properly though, this just looks wrong. S
So does he Series 6 Trace kit. You could just as well say 'Myleene Klass' and have the same effect on me. I love it. I have a GK/Ashdown rig which I love too - but that's just because I couldn't buy series 6 stuff new when my S6 got nicked. I bought later furry Trace stuff - as much use as a chocolate teapot and it put me off Trace. Daft attitude because S6 stuff is built like a tank, sounds superb and someone should buy yours and use it. Either the player or the rig will die eventually - my money's on the rig to survive. In fact you should keep it and forget the Ampeg - but that's just my opinionated ramblings.
23.
Hi all We played at new venue that's just opened up in my home village. We decided to do a charity gig to raise money for this National Trust appeal. We raised over £1000, which was nice. I also borrowed Mr. Warwickhunt's Aggie DB112 cabs. They sounded bloody marvellous...
'kin 'ell. Somebody's stuck a pair of old second hand basses in the pics so I get distracted from viewing the aggies You want to get them shifted , mate. Tell you what - £300 spots for the pair and I'm cutting my hand off. Top effort on the fundraising front - caps doffed. We were in York last night. My nemesis venue where I always get injured (sprained ankle once , broken toe once , back strain , black eye etc etc). Injury free last night though and really enjoyed playing to a small (the venue's small but it was rammed ) very enthusiastic audience - some of whom laughed at my gags - told them to get out more! 2 things of note. No.1 don't drop your strap 2" 10 mins before a gig in an attempt to look cool and then expect the A string to be where it should be !! No2 - the correct answer, in York, to the question 'can I have a pint of John Smiths , please ' actually IS '£2.70'. They're not telling lies or anything. I thought they'd hung Dick Turpin not made him chair of the Lic.Vits.Assoc.
24.
It's going to take me a while to get it set up to my spec but it's worth doing and I will thoroughly enjoy doing it. OK, I will eventually sell it, but that's the Beedster way after all
Well....should that involve a black pickguard , a badass and a Fender transfer don't bother with a 'for sale' ad when a pm will do the same job
