1.
I'm really... really.... tempted by a little giant 350....
Not managed to actually find one to try yet but I am too. If you're 'building up' gear so to speak (thinking partic about the very sensible suggestions re extension cabs) do yourself a favour and get versatile stuff of good quality. 'Used' is a more prudent route with cabs than amps. The cab needs to be powerful enough to cope with what you're likely to have NEXT amp wise , not just what you have now - otherwise you'll find yourself in the 'losing money by trading spiral'. I doesn't have to be big physically but needs to cope with road rigours. Think also about the ohmage of the cab. An 8ohm cab will do a great job as an extension to a combo and would work perfectly well as a stand alone cab with your next amp BUT most amp heads deliver full power into a 4ohm load which you won't get from one 8ohm cab - that leaves you needing a 2nd 8 ohm cab or changing to a single 4ohm cab. Either way you would be spending. For the mo - my best guess is you're asking a little too much of your combo. As folk are saying - try to beg steal or borrow any halfway decent 8ohm cab and see if the sound improves , certainly it will be louder. In that case you know the score and can start looking for something suitable to buy.
2.
I think what's more worrying is that I know full well it'll hit my like a tonnes of bricks at some point... probably riiiiiiiiiiight before going onstage... lol!
You're in danger of 'making' that happen. Calm down. By stepping on to that stage you take the first steps into a place you want to feel is home. It's new. It's odd. You can't quite fit with it etc. But it's home. Things will go wrong tomorrow - OK? That's the deal. It's the same for me and I've been doing it for nigh on 30 years. Only difference is I'm used to it and have learned how to cope. Allow yourself to learn too. Expect the unexpected - but don't try and work out what that will be. Tomorrow - be an actor. Be confident beyond what you feel. Be the best bass player that ever lived even when you're not. Know all there is to know even though you don't. Soon it'll be 2 gigs - then 5 - then 20. Sooner than you think. You'll find you have to act less and less as it becomes a real part of your life.
3. What a pisser. I suppose you've already thought about taking the remains of the smashed board to a sparky/guitar techy type. That sounds as good a shot as any considering Fender's reply. There's plenty of after market 2 band eq's around - try basspartsresource as a start point - but that won't really solve the problem if you're after the exact same thing. I take it you pass the lead through the strap when you're gigging?
4. This guy took some great pics of us at the Boardwalk,Sheffield on Sunday. http://www.boardwalklivepixs.com/page80.htm
5. If you believe in what you're doing - here's your chance , at last , to do something about it. Deep breath - stay calm - it's your stage. Go do it. We all get nervous , because we care. Full report afterwards please.
6.
Ok, no longer looking for offers over £1000. What do you wise men think it is worth then?
If it's all original plus a pro quality defret - somewhere in the region of £500. Vintage and Rare , and similar shops , would tag it over a grand but nobody in the real world would pay that. That's this man's opinion - I don't claim to be wise.
7. I well remember his avatar and his contributions. Bad news indeed. Sleep tight , mate.
8. To be honest Gareth - half the membership object to folk joining the site just to flog something so will probably not be interested and the rest are clued up enough to know that your ask is well OTT , partic at the moment as prices are def. on a downhill trend. It's your bass , I hope you get what you want for it. Good luck with it's sale.
9. I think one's enough in a pub band - the sound gets too swamped with more - but it can depend on what sort of sound the dude has. A single , cleanish Tele say in a 3 piece. That would create a hole every time there was a solo. One guy with a big sound is fine. In bigger venue's 2 fill out the sound in a much more interesting way. Trouble with a lot of '2nd guitarists' in pub bands is they tend to be somebody else's mate , usually the lead guitarist who they're in awe of , and don't contribute much.
10. I've never even seen anything as old as this , let alone play it. I'd dearly love to - just to get a feel of something that was around at the start of something that became so important to me years on and has proved to be a life interest. A museum piece then - from a collector standpoint , a sound investment - but I'm not a collector , I'm a player. No way I'd ever buy anything at this sort of money.
11. There was loads of chat in these parts a bit back about Ashdown mini 48s. I would think most of the issues raised re those would be similar with this Mark Bass only more so. I loved my mini48 but many reported problems with sound break up and the rear porting.
12. I know there's a few refs. to these in previous threads but I see them advertised for sale in several places now. Anybody tried one yet?? Partic the green 350 job.
13.
...and I agree. I'm not personally a fan of solid finishes either.
I've noticed that The guy that sold the 17yr old Jnr Dr D his Precision told me to always go for non-solid colours as the wood has to be good. I'm sure he was correct back in the late 70s rather than now - there was some utter sh*te back then , esp in the 'copy' market. I've always remembered his remark though and it seems to have served me well.
14.
Bear in mind we're talking about Fenders here. Until the late 70's, Fender generally did solid colours, bursts and blondes.
I know - and my comment stands.Given a straight choice between 2 otherwise similar basses I'd rather have a bass where I could see something of the grain than a solid paint job.
15. Mine might be on its way soon. The new GK micro head will hopefully give me the sound I want plus the power (the current range hasn't the power) Then it's probably down to a lightweight , efficient , 12 plus 8 cab to finish the job. Have to get my thinking cap on re. that. I love my GK/korg tuner rack set up and my Ashdown compacts , but my elbows are getting stiff and my knee continues to worsen. Time to do something sensible before they go ballistic. My rig isn't the biggest by any means but I'm not prepared to lug it about much longer. It hot home Sat. night - I wondered who else would be daft enough to do what ammounts to a house removal at 1 in the morning in the pissing rain. If I ever stop playing - that'll be the reason.
16. Might be a bit simplistic - but I always figured if wood isn't covered up with six layers of paint it has to be good wood.
17. Even I don't understand this one - and I think I'm more tolerant of fancy prices on vintage Fender basses than most. There's no room for an investment opp. here at anywhere near that money. It's way out for anyone wanting an old bass to actually play - so who does that leave?? Nobody. There's def. a point with - for instance - Music Ground putting telephone numbers on instruments to keep them in the shop attracting customers who may spend on something else , plus If someone walking in is daft enough....c'est la vie. Maybe this is in that catagory. Why it's on ebay I can't imagine other than as an advert for a vintage guitar shop. And - no - were my six numbers to come up tomorrow I wouldn't have it. You have to have some degree of respect for the life you've lead to date - some sort of integrity. I couldn't come on here and brag about my purchase to you lot with any sense of pride and I think it would be bloody well insulting to those of you that work/ gig /save hard for far better instruments costing a fraction of this one. It's tha bass equivalent to winning the lotto and building your own private pub in the garden. I'd rather go to a proper pub and meet some friends.
18.
Does it have to have the F word on the headstock? If not I believe both John Shuker and Rob Allen make P-shaped thin-line basses with piezos and magnetic pickups.
Correct - but they'd be (rightly) wanting proper money for one. My self imposed 'work' ethic won't let me pay proper money for a home use instrument. Plus I'd like a Fender , yes.
19.
Is this close enough?
Nope - it's the idea of a Fender fretless electro/acoustic bit that interests me. And I woudn't want a blue one!
20.
If it was any good, surely Fender would have made loads of them? S.P.
If it had been more popular maybe they would - which is slightly different.
21. Well - maybe not quite so rare but I've been looking for one of these for ages. This ones in the USofA and the likley bid required to secure it , plus the shipping , plus the church boys cut when it gets here makes it a bit rich for my blood. However - should any of you know where there's one for sale , or if you come across one in the future , please pm me and go to the top of my Xmas card list. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RARE-FENDER-PRECISIO...p3286.m63.l1177 I played one briefly in a shop years ago. It was very playable with a reasonable - if not stunning - core sound. It also had a slight 'cheap' feel to it - hence my unwillingness to part with a fortune for one. I do, however, think it looks the dogs. And I'd love one for home use and hopefully to find a job of work for.
22. In the dim and distant past when I figured that the 3 or 4 songs I could acually play entitled me to a Rolls Royce , a Mansion and the ability to snort coke off a mucky birds arse I actually gave up a job when I was put on shifts. I suspected at the time that it was a deliberate move on my form's part to put a stop to my playing - as they had done with another guy at the firm. Shift work is a consideration long term if you're intending gigging to be a life choice. If you're talking a serious , rewarding career here though - and depending on commitments you will have to put gigging second. Yes you can gig around shifts - even swap them etc but it won't be easy and it will come to a head at some point. If I had my time again I'd do the same thing , but that's just me - you have to decide what sort of life you want.
23. Status series 3000. Spalted beech top and refinish done by Jon Shuker.
24. Isn't there one in 'Space Oddity' - 'Ground control to Major Tom' etc Anyone ancient enough to remember those Wasp synths? Like a keyboard back scuttled a Stylophone and the Wasp was it's accidental love child.
25.
Here's my custom J5... since the pics were taken, she's now wearing nice ebony control knobs courtesy of a splendid chap in the US.
