What is the most you'd personally pay for a new bass?
Ander87 replied to lidl e's topic in Bass Guitars
I'm with 2 bands, recording and gigging on a rather relaxed schedule though... I don't think I can justify more than £2k these days, new or used! With that in mind, I rather buy 2nd hand, there's great stuff if you wait enough. My AO Precision 60s was around 1500, my MM SR 4HH Special even less (banging deal) and now I've got a Ricky 4003 Ruby red inbound for 1800£ - and I feel a bit guilty about that one, but missus insisted for xmas... Selling a shortly owned whilst very loved Jazz bass in a discontinued Sonic Blue colour. Nitrocellulose, Pure Vintage '64 pickups (only on this bass and the flea, not available separately), all case and candy. Strung with D'daddario XT's - NEW, can show receipt. Only blemish is on the side of the upper horn, not a ding, must be a superficial scratch/mark, there's still paint/nitro on it and even if I'm picky with my stuff it has not bothered me. Seen an itch I have to scratch (Ric 4003 Jetglo) so selling it for same as I bought it or very near offer. Colour goes from almost white to greenish or baby blue, lovely indeed!

oh and no trouble with the 18v operation as I've got 9/12/18v on my (HARLEY BENTON!) power supply!

Hey Lee, so good to hear from you buddy, thank you for your post! Ah, I do remember the Nemphasis I had from you, the last pedal I held onto before I oversimplified my rig - that was in between bands and now that I'm full back into one band and forming another, pedals get important again, aye? The Nemphasis had that very nice tone-enhancing, always on mode I liked with simple operation. Whilst I'm more permissive to 'just fatten up' and sacrifice treble for neosoul and clean, for my punk rock gig I need to keep that treble (going in with Jazz neck pickup mostly) whilst thickening up a bit... I do all pick so it's not like I need a lot of attack/release controls, long as all strings sound similar volume and it 'riches up' the tone, I'll be happy... I do have that feeling that the Effectrode would satisfy more my 'clean rig', especially on a P bass with flats, that low mids thing, but not as sure that it does for the distortion and fuzz I add behind it on passages with the punk rock band...! I will be getting the Diamond with the adaptor and the power supply for £170 which seems a steal considering they're all £250ish and outside UK... Will try to do an A/B once I'm back and decide from there - nice of the Effectrode on the top mounting jacks and love the silent operation but I've heard it the Diamond is really quiet too (phew!). As you suggest, with the EQ control I can fatten up for neosoul and boost treble for punk rock if need be. Best, Ander.

So I offer meself, my good gear and spacious Mazda for an originals band... I'm currently rehearsing about once a week (not strict) weekdays for my punk rock band Barking Poets, so I'm looking for something to do on the weekend. I do not know theory and almost neither the notes but I have been playing for a while and nobody has complained - I write all my lines pretty quickly too. Live experience in front of 4 punters same as a sold out show in Scala, London, for 1k+ folk. Would love neosoul/motown.. potentially some not-too-technical metal... I'd like to have a band to play finger style but I do pick as well. Ander.

Hmmm…! If only I had a clue about soldering and that world of clones I would well consider - geez the fat general is now a hefty £240…! I remember not so long ago it was £170, oh well…! Going for that Diamond BCP-1, at £170 I have to try it then will sell whichever I like least out of those two… I would defo like a try at the Fat General or clone if I see any…! Ander.
-
… and a Diamond BCP-1 appeared near my hometown in Spain for £170 😃 will pick up sometime next week, this could be a very interesting thread as a comparison! Ander.
-
Hahaha! I will not lie i do remember I had a conversation regarding the Fat General some time ago with another basschatter, some 2-3 years ago before I gave up on pedals only to come back again 😂 funny enough I was speaking recently in PM with another bc’er interested in my Effectrode… oh lord…! so you have it? Have you had a chance to have a go at it? Hmmm! Ander.

Hey gang, I've always liked my compressors simple (not many knobs, easy to set) and 'always on' / tone enhancing types. Need them to thicken up my treble strings playing on pick with distortion and fatten up everything on clean and finger style. I've recently built a mini board and an Effectrode PC-2A is at the heart of it - now whilst on holidays in Spain I've a chance for a Diamond BCP-1 at around £200, same as the Effectrode I have. What shall I expect? Is it worth a swap? I know the general advise will be 'get both, sell whichever you like least', and probably is what I will be doing, but I do not have a lot of experience with compressors and would love to hear your thoughts or experiences from folks who've had both, and definitely a 'what to listen for'. Like I said I like simple operation, tone enhancing, always on and versatility for pick/fingers over clean/distortion - little do I ask eh?! Hoping this will evolve into a comparison/review once I have both, with the help of everyone I hope! Thanks! Ander.

Hahaha most definitely! The dispersion of this cab is great even at low volume - and it encourages everyone else to play a bit louder too!

Ah @Ralf1e, yes, I will be doing Hipshot detuner on the P bass to do Drop D if necessary (there's always the odd tune) and the Stingray on D Standard along with a detuner to get to Drop C - that should make me not want a 5er, at least for longer (was also considering BEAD, we'll see, there's this band I'm listening to a lot that does Drop C and may well want to stay there). @police squad yes, same! 80% of the basses in the last 2 years have been either stingrays or precisions, so this jazz is a nice great addition - somehow never managed to have a P and a Ray at the same time either, guess I've been too black or white, all P's or all Rays...! @lidl e have never tried a Rickenbacker and they're popping up more often than ever, but the missus and I agreed that I should stick to 'just' 3 hangers on the wall considering all the other bits I've got at the moment (including a potential baby and a motorcycle, ha!)... Ah, a nice jetglo would look grand on stage though aye? Not so sure about the neck width and tales I've heard about playability though...! Always have interpreted the Ric as a power jazz... but then again I'd define the Ray as a power jazz with the P thickness so I'll just say (or want to believe) I'm covered! Best, Ander.

Ah, my bandmates told me I was a lunatic for getting the BF Six10 but they love it, pushes the band in the right way - now they ask me to bring it even to practise 😁
-
Ah thank you @Ralf1e! I thought I’d never rejoin again with a Cruz Teal… and we’ll my rig is admittedly more varied than with an SR Special 4 & 5…! Entertaining tunings now haha could keep the jazz on standard, standard with detuner to drop D on the p bass, D standard with detuner to Drop C for the Stingray… that’d cover both my project with two basses each and leave me room to pretend to play metal if need be 🤣, or have ‘almost a 5er’ when doing Drop C… … so much room for activities! 😂
-
Haha! I like to have more than one bass in standard so that I can take them to studio for my band... setting and resetting again every time I go to the studio could be well annoying...! One bass for each band and another as backup.... the P could do BEAD for my neosoul bits, the standard for the punk rock thing and stingray drop C could work for some metal or something... we shall see! Ander.
-
Thanks gents! Very happy with the three of them... I'm now debating whether I shall switch up some of the tunings, it wouldn't be crazy to put the P on BEAD or something, or a Drop C along the way... Oh well! Ander.

I prefer the P bass traditionally - love a jazz neck though, and that zing pierces through the mix great, but precision as a foundation for me. Having said that... A stingray can be set as a P and a J in any case, or a hybrid on steroids! If I had to choose, 1st Stingray, 2nd Precision, 3rd Jazz. Ander.
-
Ah, thanks gents! David, it may be a slippery slope if you look into the stingrays haha! Specially the last Special iteration, slimmer neck but P bass width...! And cheers Lozz, knowing what I play I don't think I can beat it as is...! Ander.

So... some of you fine folk may remember how some 2 months ago I went on a rampage to sell my stingrays - simply too much money on gear when I had to recover from windows we replaced at home, and a bathroom renovation...! ... Resolved to sell the 'rays with pain in my heart, replaced by American Original series Fenders, P and J - how great are these basses? I was thoroughly impressed and managed to cash in a grand to ease things on the bank account. Being back in this forum (9 months hiatus to stop selling and buying!) I let my hair off and replaced my rig without much investment... Ashdown ABM 600 head and a mighty Barefaced Six10 - from an Eich T900 and a Big Baby 2. Fast forward the bathroom is done, the windows are paid and I had sold a couple watches so I had more than I needed and then I saw this Ray Special... In the Cruz Teal that only came out on the first series and that I so dearly love...! Out of what I wanted to spend, but received an offer on eBay and then I started to consider... I messaged the owner and he was happy to let it go at the last offer minus fees, pretty much the same price as you see on the regular MM Stingrays these days so I had to pull the trigger. Some crazy 6-7 hours to remind me why I hate driving to Manchester and 320 miles later I got home, set him up, waxed the neck, hydrated the board... et voila... Very, very ambivalent collection right here, Jesus even if it's only been a couple months I missed the stingray tone! Don't get me wrong, the passive Fenders are just brilliant and plan to keep using it... but there you go, a story that started sour selling my most beloved basses managed to come back even better than it started - to happy endings! Ander.
