I was young and inexperienced back then Luke, please. But, yes, you told me so 😂 and I was trying to make P basses sound like everything else. In all honesty, through all the basses I’ve had the Stingray Special is the one I really miss/regret selling (although that was a 5 string and back then I wasn’t playing enough to warrant keeping it). Also since I’m confessing… I was trying to convince myself (maybe a bit too hard) that no bass above 1200£ ish is worth it for me. Spoiler alert: I was wrong. Or worse, lying to myself. I’m happy for now as things are, it all makes sense… for now. Genuinely want to change this behaviour 🧐 if I can’t settle on a Stingray Special I simply cannot settle on anything…! I had the Sterling ray34 but this neck is more comfortable, better finished and well the sound is shocking nice…! Long may it last…! Ander.

Jack just purchased my shortly owned, sadly leaving JMJ Mustang. Great communications and super easy to deal with - top chap to the community and marketplace, sell with confidence. Ander.

Great advise ha! I do prefer the jazz neck to be honest - having said that the SR Special is quite wide for my standards but shallower which makes a lot of sense when increasing width, I do love the touch of a Stingray neck...!

Hmm, this is interesting - I hold my Limelights to the best standard that a 1200£ bolt on bass can give, but also still the bridge to my Stingray Special is now more obvious - wondering if Nash is the equivalent before going full whack on a Fender CS (not my budget, maybe if really lucky on a 2nd hand one). My band is potentially disbanding and I'm wondering whether I need 3 basses (2 Limelights and the forementioned MM SR Special) - I have a feeling that if I 'upgrade' to a Nash or something similar and let go of the Limelights I'll end up missing them one way or another! I should just get busy playing or practising, my current lineup doesnt really need improving for 2 bands lol! Best, Ander.

oooft! Gorgeous! I love the Sean Hurley one, how’re you finding it? I love the mute on your/my Limelight, hope it’s serving you well. Much as I’ve tried to defend that instruments over 1200£ range are too much money… well, a Stingray Special made its way back to me and gosh, I have missed that top tier instruments feel dearly. how would you compare those two against the Limelight…? Best, Ander.

Oh actually, look what I came across…! Not the same of course but I’m drooling over this.

‘ItS NoT bLaCK ItS ChArCoAL…’ I love pulling that one, sorry and thanks! It really is a lovely bass - came to life with flats funny enough, it’s a Motown machine! I’m really in love with it…! take care buddy! Ander.

Gauge: ,045, ,065, ,085, ,105 24 Carat gold coating Suitable for people allergic to nickel Long scale Hexagonal core Roundwound Made in Germany Cut for 3+1 MM/Stingray. Postage likely 1,50£ including padded envelope. These strings have plenty of life as the gold coating preserves them - I'm just loyal to NYXL for rounds and hence surplus to requirements (I had 3 sets of NYXL lying around) but I can testify they're very bright still without being overpowering. Best, Ander.

Bought Kev's wonderful Charcoal Sparkle Musicman Stingray Special. Can I just commend the perfect shape of this bass? This bass has been gigged and it's in as good shape as new. I've had a SR5 Special from new in the past and this is in the same condition. I of course had to adjust it and change strings to my taste but the neck and body etc is spotless as advertised - buy with confidence from this lovely chap: easy communications and frequent updates, serious seller. Ander.

Haha! I know eh? I did - but the band disbanding means a change in gear - also a super nice dream bass came here, my 35th bday is coming, I’m expecting a bonus and got a new job for April… …and my wife said ‘just get the bass you want and get it out of your system!’ - you really need to take on those times your wife tells you to do something. It’s what good husbands do. Planets aligned and had to take that chance…! Also, I am loyal to my 3 hanger system. One comes in so one must come out…! I’ve just been playing it and heck, it’s a load of fun eh… Ander. -
Hi all, This little bass is last one in and first one out regrettably. Whilst I love it, my current band is suddenly disbanding (totally unexpected) and I've no use for this baby outside it. The bass is in perfect condition, and has been cleaned with the Music Nomad suite (nut lubrication, fretboard moisturiser, detailer and polish) by yours trully who uses to charge for bass adjustments locally. Lovely nitro finish sheen and dark even rosewood board. The action is mid-low (can get lower without buzz but even to myself it felt too low) and the neck is ultra straight. All working perfectly. Bought for the asking price, but I'm throwing in a brand new short scale Fender fitted gigbag (upgrade over the long scale stock one it comes with) and LaBella 760F-MUS (right string with silk on both ends designed for neck through Mustangs, instead of the crappy long scale Fenders in stock). A considerable upgrade. As you can see her I love the bass - huge lot of dynamics and sensitive to touch and hand placement. The adjustment gigbag and strings would kick you almost £100 so no silly offers please. Weight is a healthy 3.5kg / 7lbs11oz Any more pictures requests just ask. Will you look at this near black looking fretboard...! In a darker light the Daphne blue can change quite a bit - both colours are pretty accurate: Internet picture but the gigbag is exactly this one, much better than the long scale stock:

Hey all, Took this as a 'gift' from a buyer. It is battered everywhere but has a confident weight and solid woods, I'd say alder/rosewood. I've taken a lot of grime from it and it is okay to touch it now - I could potentially be infected with new diseases to be discovered in this bass - I can't promise you won't catch them but at least now you will stay clean after holding this bass. I was gonna restore it with my spare gotoh res-o-lite aged tuners (from my limelights' E strings, now on Hipshot Xtender drop D tuners) but they won't fit with this bass' fender mex style tuners. The bass works; E string tuner is broken although it turns with pliers. Adding red pickguard of my own and you're welcome to take one gotoh resolite if useful to you as a project, same as coper tape, thumb rest etc. Will take strings in trade, tapewound prefered. If I have to drive/move around I rather take cash, otherwise I'm happy to hear what you have, I don't need pedals or anything so.... I reckon just strings would do trade wise. Unless you have a similar range fretless bass that I can fiddle with - not interested in pocketing out, thanks! Best, Ander.

The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!

Now that I have 3 basses, one P on rounds, the other on flats… thinking whether I should try nylon tapewounds on the JMJ…! The 760F-MUS labellas are great but they’re greater yet on my P bass, I may fancy a change. Any experiences on shorties with tapewounds? The medium scale would do for the trick for the thru body strings on the Mustang. Best, Ander. -

Aha! You do make sense on that pickup/setting assessment - I'm happy with the JMJ's 41mm where I wouldn't as a long scale, 38mm has to be interesting! Made me chuckle with the fence comment but I totally get you! I think my only grip on why I wouldn't go full on short scale is a) the string spacing, I love my 19mm and can't seem to find that on the JMJ or other Fender/Classic styles, and b) I would miss the piano-like statement-y tone definition of my long scales. Having said that, I've found my JMJ (my first foray into short scales) a great lot of fun (that thing does grrrrooove!). Ander. -
So, I've realised I don't need all my 3 basses on flats. I've a P on regular Deep Talking Bass flats, same as the Mustang JMJ. This bass is gonna go back to rounds. Gold cool as it gets strings, a bit brighter and punchier than your regular flats. I've had them on for a couple weeks (can show receipt) and have played them for about an hour or so. Trades considered for LaBella black nylon 60-115, if at all, sale preferred. Cut for 4L Fender Headstock. Postage at expense.

Hmmm I can see you’re not the only one in this transition. I’m intrigued…! I don’t think I can do away with my Limelights but I was very torn between the SR and JMJ, now you’ve got both! Where do you stand with them if you gotta pick one? Ander. -
music to my ears! Great purchase!

Love anodised with covers.... Although my case is an admittedly different colour!

NBD - Short Scale... Is 3 the magic number? What a journey!!
Ander87 replied to Ander87's topic in Bass Guitars
Well that’s interesting! it really got to me that it came with long scale strings so I changed them halfway thru this thread to the LaBella Flats 760F-MUS They make a lot of sense for me, but I will try rounds at some point. I know it’s probably my OCD but I didn’t love the break angles on the actual string with the ones it came with, you could see the winding bent out and whatnot… Best, Ander. -

@Osiris thank you mate! much appreciated - I have just changed it to Labella's and they're to my linking much better than the Fenders. These flats have silk by the ball end (as they bend on a thru body like this) and also appropriate trimming/silk at the string end - now they don't curl like the stock Fenders - they sound much more clear and alive, stronger bottom too. I also find that with flat strings an action a tad bit higher helps with better tone, I prefer it. Having said that I will no doubt test rounds on this bass at some point - out of curiosity which ones did you go for? I am hoping to find some 45-105 or similar, looks like most are 45-100. Ander. -
By happenstance, yes! I changed the pickguard (was too brown) and installed the mute recently.
-
So I tried. I bought this a week ago and it seems I've just closed the door on guitars - yes, I'm a bassman (or so I think lol!) The guitar is in very very good condition - better than most I have seen on this age. New NYXL 11-50 strings, gig bag included. Low nice action, frets in very good shape - two dings in the body that are less than 2mm, really unnoticeable a meter afar and less yet on stage - and a small mark around fret 4; I've tried capture them in the pictures. Any questions just ask!
-
It escapes me as to why would Fender use long scale strings - hence the pricing since the strings roll around the post. These are stable and do have plenty of life, structurally sound - gauge is 45-100. Posting on top, cut for Mustang, 4 in line with two laps around the post, silk in good shape. Best, Ander.
