1. Peavey make some great guitars and basses, but for some strange reason they seem to be very under-rated. Here is my late 80's American made Rudy Sarzo Signature. The build quality and playability are amazing. Far better than any Fender or Gibson (and I've had quite a few over the years). Great gold plated Schaller hardware etc. Beautiful through neck. Oh and I love the snake eye block inlays on the fretboard, which came from Rudy's time with Whitesnake. Great tonal palate from active circuit and humbucking ceramic pick-ups. Plenty of growl & thud bit like T'bird or Alembic. The closest I have seen to this are the American Cirrus series. No idea what it's worth, but the 5 piece laminate neck feels close to my Alembic.
2. Am considering getting a 6 string bass. Have fairly small hands so have always prefered slimmer necks i.e. Jazz, T'Birds, MM Sterling, Ibanez etc Was thinking about an Ibanez SR1206 (like the sound & look etc) but fellow Basschatters are reporting problems with quality control and build issues. Budget up to £1000 new or preowned. Appreciate views?
3. I tried the SR1204 & SR1604 in GuitarGuitar and was very impressed with the playability, balance and tonal range of both models. Great pick-ups. Really liked the natural wood finishes too. Was just about to order the SR1206 NTF, but will hold off pending further feedback and investigation. Worried that I now might be completely underwhelmed when compared to my recent aquisition of a Dingwall 5 ABII which is absolute magic. (probably not a fair comparison given the vastly differing price!)
4. A couple of Fenders I used to own:- The Fender Reggie Hamilton (sunburst) is a great jazz bass with P/J pick-up configuration and active circuitry with passive switch. USA Precision Deluxe (chrome red) with MM/P configuration was also a very versatile bass but no passive switch. Excellent bridge pick-up. As I prefer slimmer profile jazz necks, I now mainly use an American Jazz with S1 Switching passive J pick-ups. The series switching is good, but not quite a P bass sound (but close enough for Jazz!?) or this Czech made Spector (spalted poplar) has superb PJ configuration and plays like a dream. All a matter of taste really.
5. Many Thanks. That's really helpful. Possibly a Rosetti then. I will check out serial number.
6.
This is an Egmond
WOW BetaFunk you've nailed it. Many thanks. I've been playing for 40 years and never seen one before. Do you know when and where they were made? Cheers Graham
7.
Oh I like that, I've seen some Russian stuff on eBay that look similar but the 1/4" input suggests its European. Possibly Eko. If you look at the back of the pots that might give you an idea of origin
Thanks, I have searched EKO bass models but not yet come up with anything. It is a bit of a mystery so I might start taking it apart to gain a few more clues.
8.
Looks almost homemade to me...
Thanks Steve. Yeah I'm beginning to think it might be homemade or substantially modified. But the serial number on the headstock suggests it's factory built or maybe a Frankenstien!
9. A friend of mine found this in an old cowshed in Ireland. Think it is circa 1960-70s. It has 24 frets, a very thin body and seems like a fairly low quality budget model. Though pick-up seems quite decent I initially thought it might be an early Teisco, Japanese or Framus European but had no joy googling for similar pics? Looks like the aluminium truss rod cover and bridge plate might be custom-made later additions. Probably not worth restoring. But very interested to see fellow bass chatters opinions. Thanks for looking.
10. Bought a Phil Jones Bass 300 powered cab from Scooby. Item in great condition, as described. Great comms. Very pleased. Highly recommended.
11. Just collected a Phil Jones Bass Cab which was in excellent condition and very reasonably priced. Great comms and an absolute pleasure to deal with. Many thanks Chris
12. I have a Markbass CMD 102P and Mini121P. They are both excellent combos and hard to choose between hence I acquired both!! I use them with Markbass extension cabs on bigger gigs. I have tried these against a number of combos and IMHO nothing else came close. I lliked sound of the old GK Combos, but they weighed a ton. On balance I very marginally prefer CMD 102P as it has tiltback and to my ears the 2x10 is a tad more punchy. Having said that the Mini 121p is smaller & even lighter and can be tilted back with a Markstand. Let your ears (& back muscles) be the best judge. PS PHIL JONES BASS stuff is also well worth a listen.
13. Well that decided it - I'm committed now ---- or should be!! Thanks guys.
14. I originally had an Epiphone T'bird with bolt-on neck, which was a great bass for the money at the time, but no comparison to the Gibson T'birds I acquired since. Main difference was American pickups and thru-neck. So if these have Thru neck, American pick-ups, they only need to reintroduce much classier chrome pick-ups and hardware, I would just have to buy one---or two! It is worth changing the strap button position to reduce neck dive. I also added HIPSHOT SUPERTONE bridges to my T'bird & EB3. They far better than original Gibson/Epiphone bridges, and can be retrofitted without any mods to original instrument.
15. Sorry just too many great bass/drum combos to choose one. As Julie Andrews once sang -- Here are a few of my favourite things James Jamerson/Pistol Allen or Uriel Jones Bernard Edwards/TonyThompson Sting/Copeland Flea/Chad Smith Andy Frazer/Simon Kirke Lee Sklar/Billy Cobham Squire/Bruford Tal Wilkenfeld/Vinnie Colaiuta Verdine White/White J P Jones/Bonzo Glen Hughes/Dave Holland
16. Hi whereabouts in Warwickshire are you based?
17.
I have a 212MNT and live in South London, you are welcome to bring your head and try it out, obviously at low volume though or I'd be strung up by the neighbours
Thanks that's a very kind offer indeed. I am currently in Dublin, Ireland and will be back in South London probably early May. Cheers
18.
Would be worth you taking a trip to Camden. Bass Gallery had a little 1x12 Vanderkley in the demo room that blew me away a couple weeks ago. Probably less selection than Bass Direct, but a hell of a lot closer to south London.
Thanks. Yes, ideally I need to compare sound directly head to head or should I say cab to cab, but even then that is no substitute for using at a gig with our drummer who models himself on "Animal"
19. Yo EZZY Boy, Have you tried using your MXR DI Box as a preamp straight into the PJB300? Was wondering if my Sansamp or even the lineout of a Markbass would be compatible?
20. Hi All, I have used many bass rigs over many years including Hiwatt, Acoustic, Fender, Laney, Gallien Krueger, and currently Markbass. I selected MB afew years back after direct head to heads with Ampeg etc etc. I am now looking for quality lightweight speakers that will cut through the mix. I play a wide variety of music mainly rock, funk, blues, soul, etc in tribute acts, wedding & blues bands etc. I love my Markbass amp sound and speakers in isolation, BUT cabs ocassionally seem a bit wooly or to lack clarity on stage when playing with a medium/loud 5/6 piece band. Are Vanderkleys or similar the answer? Appreciate views of experienced Vanderkley players please.
21. Hi Is this cab still available? If so can you please post some pics? Cheers
22. I have been using Markbass exclusively for several years now. I recently bought the Blackline 250 mainly out of curiosity (and back-up which I don't really need!). In a head to head comparison with Little Mark 2 (500W) through a variety of MB cabs, I could not tell the difference in sound, there is obviously marginally less power and headroom between the 250watt Blackline amp and my 500watt models. In conclusion the Blackline 250 is an absolute winner in it's class, at circa £250 they are great value and make that superb MB sound available to a wider market.
23. Hi Please see pic of my Warwick will send more by email later. Cheers
