What makes a Precision Bass, a Precision Bass?
Bassfinger replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
A Fender factory, or a Squier factory. -
Im a classic and prog rocker born well out of time. And I also have a fondness for the music of Gordon Lightfoot. And Vivaldi. As for JMJ, his Docklands performance of Magnetic Fields 2 is absolutely mind blowing. He good.

Absolutely. The Fountains of Wayne are far better.

Just give them what they want and do Sex on Fire (the song, that is, don't set fire to yourself and have sex for their entertainment). It's reasonable fun to play on bass, so why not? I tell you what boils my pith about gigging. Not so much the gigging itself, which I enjoy, but some members of the bands approach to it. A set list should be set in stone for some weeks on the lead up to a gig. Our guitarists are big ones for throwing in a new song with 3 days to do. "It's easy", they say. It may be for them, because as a guitarist also myself I know 3 or 4 chords on a guitar is a lot easier to learn than hundreds of notes, double stops, and the odd chord all done in a particular order. "Just play the root", they say to that - no, I play bass properly or I don't play at all. It's narking me off a little, and I've stuck with it as theyre all otherwise nice guys and pleasant to hang around with, but I'm well known on the local circuit and there are more bands/projects than their are bassists so Im not hostage to them if they don't start acting a bit more professionally with their planning.

Aye lad. Enter the link for your song, select the file format, click go, within 2 or 3 seconds you have a fine with your song on it. Ive done it through Audacity in the past, but this is soooo much simpler and a helluva lot quicker.

11lbs unusable? My breakfast weighs more than that.

We have a keyboardler in our band and I've never had any reason to think about it. One band on the pub circuit I saw recently had a bassist who did double duty as a keyboardler. Fine, but when playing the keyboard - and he was good - they had no bass and it just didn't sound right to by battered lug holes. It's not as if he was even making an attempt to fill in the bass part on the keys, butnwas simpky playing the keyboard bits and hell be damned to the bass.

Did 4 hours with a 10.5lb '69 precision last night, no problems. Only break I had was to splash my boots.

I quite like it. Im not a Rush nutter, but do quite like them, and Lifeson and Lee have both said that there is no Rush without Peart, so any diehards expecting them to suddenly rewind on that are a bit misguided.

The weight is itneresting, as I have the all black 4 string and its fairly svelte on the scales. Different woods?

A tortured soul who left us far too early. -
Kurt Kobain would have been voted Best Dressed Man in 2021, and would have slapped Will Smith at the 2022 Oscars.

Karen Carpenter would be running her own kebab shop. Hendrix would be a drug addiction counsellor.

It doesnt quite work like that. The magnetic field is not a neat column rising vertically out of the pole piece.

A friend of mine recently built one, a guitar. It worked out pretty well and I have to say it sounds superb. I don't think much fettling of wood was involved.

I've used them a few times, never had an issue before, during or after the B word (which seems to have passed me by entirely). I'd use them again if Thomann don't have what i'm after. -
John Entwistle or Chris Squire, who do you prefer and why?
Bassfinger replied to The-Ox's topic in General Discussion
I wonder if the methods by which they learned their craft is responsible for the large differences in their sound? Entwistle, like many young men of the time, wanted to emulate his heroes and even went as far as making his own bass as a lad because he couldn't afford one, played formed bands, played some more, joined incrementally more successful and better bands which brought him into the orbit of the likes of Daltrey, Moon and Townshend. Pretty much the traditional route for p,ayers through the ages. Squire, on the other hand, took a different route. He had a Rick-O and had noodled for a while, but didn't get serious until he had a bad acid trip. For some reason this prompted him to lock himself in his flat all day, every day, with his bass for 3 solid months and he didn't emerge until he was a top flight player and ready for the big time then and there. Then the first band he himself was involved in forming as Yes, and the rest is history. How history and happenstance may shape a player is a mystery to us lesser mortals. -
Pah, I don't uneerstand this moaning. Compared to a 30 mile speed march with a 60lb bergan, and being made to carry the Gimpy as well because I was the biggest, wearing even the heaviest of basses for a mere gigs length is nothing. We'll be in serious trouble if we ever go to war if this is the state of our nations manhood! (Tongue firmly in cheek! )

metaphorically, what does your bass sound like?
Bassfinger replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
When I play loud songs it like a bomb striking a land mine and triggering an earthquake.
