Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense film apparently had some post-production work. IIRC, as I haven't watched it for years, it is fairly obvious that the video itself is an amalgamation of several nights' concerts but the audio also had some 'editing and fine-tuning', I don't know how much. The albums are pretty much separate tracks and not pretending at all to be a continuous live concert. Still one of the best-ever performances by a band, though.

Bass players you didn't know were bass players
KevL replied to Cestrian's topic in General Discussion
KT Tunstall is listed as the the bassist -and most of the other instruments - on at least one of her albums. -
Thanks Gareth and 40hz, the various woods running along the centre look similar to some Ibanaz, hence why I wondered. Also thanks for showing the original photo that's on his t-shirt - now I know what it is I can just make out 'Down In The Tube Station At Midnight' at the top of the t-shirt. One of the greatest songs written - not just by The Jam but by anyone, it's so well-crafted and tells a complete story.
-
A great photo, just taken at the moment and not posed (I'm assuming). Where was it taken and who is the other guy? (Apologies if he's famous and everybody recognises him). More q's: Is that an Ibanez and did Bruce ever use one in The Jam? What's on his t-shirt? I thought it was The Jam at first, which would be a bit narcissistic, but it looks as if there are 4 people on it. The writing on it is unclear.

16.5mm string spacing pickups with 18mm string spacing?
KevL replied to benh's topic in Repairs and Technical
Using your initial figures of 18mm string-spacing and 16.5mm pickup spacing would put each of the inner strings 0.75mm outboard of their pickup, with each of the outer strings 2.25mm outboard of their pickup. These figures are just the centres of the strings and polepieces so will be less in reality as they do not account for string diameter or pole-piece diameter. As said, the pickups have staggered polepieces so this would further spread any discrepancy. Also, I used your initial measurement at the bridge - the slightly narrower string spacing at the pickups will obviously reduce things a small amount again. I wouldn't worry about it at all, get them bought and fitted. -
Was only joking about BofS wars (hard to convey intonation in writing). Where do you get your bulk stuff from, please?

Definitely better than the Allparts, I'll keep them in mind. There must be something available in the UK; not necessarily purpose-made markers but some suitable material. The ones I saw on the replica at the guitar show were brown-grey and seemed slightly less monotone than these ready-made ones. I should have asked him how he made them! Thanks for looking, though, I do appreciate it.

I realise it's chemically the same (the baking stuff will have some raising agents added) but the household cleaning type is usually available in more useful quantities and is more cost-effective. Let's not start some big 'Bicarb of Soda War'. I think the problem with Febreze, Shake 'n' Vac and similar is that they contain a lot of perfume to mask smells but dont effectively neutralise the cause and properly clean the material. There's a lot to be said for natural cleaning products.
-
Thanks, @ikay, I hadn't seen those Allpart ones despite my extensive Googling. I have to agree that they don't look the part, though. The search continues...

As @chris7273 said, bicarbonate of soda (the household cleaning type, not the stuff for baking) sprinkled into the case, left at least overnight, and then vacuumed out should make a difference.

I'm planning a few mods to a guitar, one of which is to replace the white plastic fingerboard markers (dots) with something that relicates the so-called clay dots for that 'authentic vintage vibe' (yes, I know). I've done some research and the best evidence seems to be that the original Fender markers were made from white vulcanised fibreboard which, over time, darkened in colour to resemble clay https://precbsstratocasters.com/vintage-fender-clay-dots/ The obvious answer would be to make some from white fibreboard but this seems to be unavailable now; I asked RH Nuttall (UK supplier of fibreboard) and they hadn't seen any white, only grey and black. Some seem to have had success with various modelling clays, putty etc. One UK-based guy said he used Ronseal wood filler to good effect so I tried a couple of shades (natural and light-brown) but neither looked right. I was at a guitar show last year and one of the (UK-based) replica-vintage makers had a couple of guitars with clay-style dots so the right material must be fairly easily available. I did hope to quiz him but he was busy with potential purchasers so I didn't want to annoy him by asking to steal his secrets. I was wondering if anybody on here has successfully achieved making convincing replica clay dots and, if so, how did you do it? Thanks in advance for any help.

Having a tidy-up and found a few things that, realistically, I am never going to use so best to move them on. Can email photos, just ask (the strings are just a packet of strings, so don't get too excited). This is my first 'For Sale' post on here but we all have start somewhere - I have bought a couple of things off here, so I am sure someone can vouch for me if required. All prices include UK postage. Payment by bank transfer, please, or cash on collection from North Wales. Rotosound roto pinks 9-42 electric guitar strings 2x unopened, original packs. £7 for the two packs. Ernie Ball Earthwood 12-54 80/20 bronze acoustic guitar strings 1x unopened, original pack. £5 Sold Elixir Nanoweb 12-53 80/20 bronze acoustic guitar strings 1x unopened, original pack. £8 Sold Gotoh GE101TS Tremolo Chrome finish, solid steel block, 11.3mm string spacing. In original packaging with arm (white tip), screws, 5x springs, claw/spring-holder. I bought this to upgrade a MIJ strat but only got as far as installing and stringing it but then removed it without use (the strat wasn't really as good as I'd hoped, so it wasn't worth it). I believe this model is suitable for many MIJ Strats but may fit others, check on Gotoh's website for dimensions. As new, no marks etc. £50 Axesrus 'Late 60s' pickups Set of 3, white covers, reverse-wound centre pickup, cloth-covered wiring. In original box with springs and 2 sets of screws (domed and round head). Never fitted, as new, see Axesrus site for more info. Their pickups are well-regarded and these would be over £120 now. £60 Thanks, Kev

Bass players you didn't know were bass players
KevL replied to Cestrian's topic in General Discussion
@Bobthedog Your work colleagues' comments is typical of those in today's world who think that something's only worth doing if it is associated with some halfwit celebrity and can be posted all over Instagram etc to show what an exciting, hip lifestyle they lead. What's happened to pursuing an activity just for one's enjoyment and satisfaction? (I'm assuming that you do get some enjoyment and satisfaction from playing bass). -
It may be well-known amongst everyone except me (and I know it's far from a new release) but I only found out recently that Mark Knopfler wrote Private Dancer, heard all over the airwaves in the mid 80's courtesy of Tin O'Tuna. He must have made a few quid from writing that.

Ha! This album's just been mentioned on Johnnie Walker's Sounds of the Seventies and he's now playing Sultans of Swing. Apparently, when Charlie Gillett first aired this single in 1976, loads of A&R people were phoning him before the single had finished playing, wanting to sign the band.
