  1. Friends, I've got GAS for a fiver. Given my experiences with my existing Sandberg I would like it to be Sandberg again. There are some for sale at PMT, but I'm not in a position to pop into their Birmingham store to try them out. I will probably ask if I can have them transferred, but that requires a deposit for each bass and so may get expensive. This is just for curiosity's sake so I'm not going to bass (badum tish) any purchase on the replies here, but which of these would you, sound unheard, pick? Why? Even better, all you Brummies, have you tried them? What were your experiences? https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/sandberg-custom-bocote-5-string-bass-with-gold-hardware https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/sandberg-basic-5-buckeye-burl-rosewood-dots-gold-hardware
  2. How does the sound post stay in place without the bridge?
  3. I can only over a cautionary tale. I took a broken item, £150 to the Post Office to get it fixed in Germany. I was assured that there would be no customs to pay the other end as it was for the repair of a faulty item, despite me insuring it for the full amount. Fast forward a week, and the company the other side had 15EUR to pay for the privilege of picking up my item. As an aside, Supernova lights are absolutely amazing. They absorbed the cost, fixed the 10 year old light and returned it without a quibble.
  4. To put the tonal counterargument for triangular ports at the corner of the boxes, I'll defer to the prose of BFM: The way I read this you would get a similar effect putting round ports at each corner of your box. In a band context I doubt I would be able to tell the difference, but maybe others will be able to.
  5. Impressive playing. On a tangent, I've been really lusting after these Delano The XTender pickups. Every single video shows them to be amazingly versatile, going from J to P via Musicman. Anyone own a set? As a longshot, anyone own a set that I could possible come over and try? They're not easy to come by.
  6. The website says that there's an instrument in, an aux in and a headphone out. Can't see any other io in the photos either. Shame because I agree that it would be a nice idea.
  7. My experience of PJB documentation and press releases is that their copy is not good, to put it mildly. They're riddled with typographical or factual errors and I'm guessing this is a copy pasta from another product, or a prototype. If it's not a mistake then it's conceivable that the speaker is coax, but again given PJB's history of mistakes and the heritage of the double4, I think that's unlikely.

    feedback for ikay

Bought some DB strings. Ian was a pleasure to deal with and the strings arrived promptly in good condition. Will definitely be happy buying from Ian again.

    Which DAW?

I was in exactly the same position as you, wondering why people thought this. Then I got into the bundled effects plugins, and I realized I think it's there. There are sliders that offer values that don't make sense, a plugin called "ReaVerb" that doesn't actually offer tweakable reverb (that's "Reaverbate") and usually there's no visual representation on what the settings have done to your sound. Here's a video comparing ReaComp to other compression plugins:
  10. Sheesh they really should add a hyphen to their patreon URL. I had to double read that.
  11. As I understand it the Blackstar headphone amp has no eq so you're at the mercy of the headphones and its sound signature. I was never a fan of the amplug but maybe it was the headphones I was using
  12. Just out of interest how much were they?
  13. Good grief! You could set that up in Dover and they'd hear it in Calais! Looks amazing. GLWTS.
  14. Nice demo. I've been to all kinds of shops around London looking for a EUB for silent practice. Of the ones I found, none could hold a candle against the Yamaha SLB-200 in terms of playability and tone......and price. There's one for sale right now. Cannot believe it's still available.
  15. Sure, that's fine. There are times though when you'd like to be able to swap batteries and charge outside the device. Bike lights and effects pedals are two examples that spring to mind.
  16. My point was along the lines of that there's a global standard for Alkaline batteries, but the world has moved on to more power hungry stuff but instead of there being a standard for lithium every device has a different size and shape of battery, making swapping them out impossible. Nothing really to do with this preamp.
  17. You're right that's probably the reason. Shame really. I get 60 hours from my Pocket Blender on a single charge, but no 9v would cut it if the current requirement is too high. <whinge> Why isn't there a standard battery size for Lithium so you can buy and replace batteries across multiple devices? Keeping AA/PP3 stocked in shops shows there's clearly still a market for swapping out batteries rather than waiting 9 hours for your device to charge.</whinge>
  18. For those that don't usually read it, there's a very good writeup of this preamp in May's edition of Sound On Sound. Not often you get bass-centric gear in that mag but they gave it a thorough explanation of input combinations and what switches there are on the box. One missing feature I would have liked would have been battery operation, perhaps with the loss of 48v. My Fishman Pocket Blender, which I adore and would cry if it broke, can do dual input with electret phantom power with a PP3 battery
  19. Sorry if this is a really stupid question, but what does the extra extra B stand for in NBBBD? Lovely bass btw, and happy birthday!
  20. Thanks. Is that not modelling which I don't like? Modelling sounds quite fake (to my ears) in the upper register, and has poor tracking in the lower. Even at its best there's a lag, although it may be better now since I last tried.
  21. These are perhaps the answer I was expecting but didn't want to hear. I was hoping that technology was advancing enough that a conventionally shaped pickup could pass as a piezo these days (and I wasn't prepared to hack up the Streamer, that's why I'm asking for conventional pickups!) For what it's worth, I probably would have bought an Ibanez by now, but space is at a premium here and the upright bass is already already taking up a fair chunk of our living space. As for swapping, yeah I may be up for that, but I've been on the same two electrics (other is a fretted Sandberg in case you wonder) for over 10 years now and have grown somewhat attached. Just to throw it in here, after some searching I've found an Ibanez with both magnetic pickups and their aerosilk piezo system: the Ibanez SRF700. If it's close to the SRH500 when on piezo that would be a killer versatile bass. Thanks all for the very helpful replies.
  22. I can't see a cable coming into the cavity from the bridge directly. My guess without removing the pickups is that the earth is daisy chained from the bridge pickup.
  23. Thanks. Even with a Warwick-made part it would still be quite an invasive procedure no? I'd rather swap pickups than route wood.
  24. My only thought was that there's some form of capacitor there. It does say it needs charging. I'm not sure which pickup I'm supposed to be looking at on that page though...
