I would guess the man in the street is only likely to put a name to the song where the bassline actually starts the song. I don't think the punters would recognise anything I play, but then again nor do the band.

I do loads of summer gigs in restaurants, outdoors. The bain of my life....chip fryers. They never fail to to trip the electrics.

Know what you mean. Sometimes its a pleasant surprise to find that you've nailed something easily, that you thought was going to be harder. I thought I was going to have an issue with Going underground some years ago as it sounded like a lot of work to get it right. The right sound and feel were the more important things.

As it's usually me that gives the glare of death to others who cock up, I make sure I don't make the same mistake twice. If anybody mentions my cock up afterwards I simply say "Yeah, thought I'd just try something a little different in that one but it didn't work so I'll just play it straight from now on"

A while ago, I did own a 7 string bass but it was strung B-F. I did not use it in a band situation, not due to anything other than that's not why I bought it. I mainly gig with a 5 string nowdays and the low B is enough for me (and my cones) I personally would have no use for a low F# but took great pleasure and amusement from the high F. Being a guitarist too, it was great for tapping, chords etc. Don't know how well defined the lowest notes would be on the F# but as you play the music you do, I guess it would work for you.

I would guess that most players on here with a little experience and currently playing in a band of some sort actually have quite a lot of theory under their belts but just don't realise it because they didn't take formal lessons or troll through theory books. There is a big difference between actually not having any theory and just not knowing all the terminology. Most have some sort of theory albeit self taught via experience but it's probably subconcious. I would imagine that the two go hand in hand to compliment each other.

If I've not had a combo at any point and have been using a seperate amp and cab. I have always (through lack of experience maybe) opted for the same manufacturer. Last rig was an Eden WT500 and a 4x10 Eden cab, as I assume that good manufacturers will make amps and cabs that compliment each other.

I may use a few chords if I'm on a 6 string, played fairly high up the register. I tend to put them into intros if there's enough space before the full band kicks in otherwise it all gets lost in the general racket. I only do it if it's going to fit the number. Great fun.

As I'd only recently joined a standard covers band, I didn't think I'd have a say yet but I've already got "On the road again" and "I'd rather go blind" dropped The latter being so boring , I started to add the hammond with my right hand while the keys player played sax. Still, they're gone now.

I met a few people there complaining about some of the 2,000 - 3,000 euro prices but speaking to some of these small builders who are doing it as a living, they are only making 6 - 8 instruments a year with hundreds of hours work going into each one. I'll get a couple of pics from a friend who was with me. It was at the Festival des guitares et lutieres at Issoudun. I used all my phone battery up on videos of acoustic guitarists who made me want to give up. In the meantime, here's a link to his site.
