1. I would guess the man in the street is only likely to put a name to the song where the bassline actually starts the song. I don't think the punters would recognise anything I play, but then again nor do the band.
2. I do loads of summer gigs in restaurants, outdoors. The bain of my life....chip fryers. They never fail to to trip the electrics.
3. You're too ill to think about bassplayers that look like that.
4. Know what you mean. Sometimes its a pleasant surprise to find that you've nailed something easily, that you thought was going to be harder. I thought I was going to have an issue with Going underground some years ago as it sounded like a lot of work to get it right. The right sound and feel were the more important things.
5. From what people say about my playing, Mr Pastry Charlie Drake Norman Wisdom But based on what I like to think, Bernard Edwards Phil Lynott Kim Stone
6.
I was a bit bored with the pickguard on my MusicMan Bongo. I went to a metal fabrication company and brought the old pickguard and asked them to duplicate it in metal. Total cost: £20. It didn't fit perfectly first time but they were very kind and tweaked it a bit for me at no charge. Fits great now. I buried it in the garden for a few days to rust a little. Then I piled dead leaves and left it for another couple of days. Below is the result. What do you guys think? Success? Abysmal failure? - martin
Seriously cool, a James Trussart Rustobongo

10.
Very close - I think it's a Helicon, but you'd have to be a certifiable tuba wonk to know that. I was very disappointed with both of EC's numbers - I'd expect someone with Clapton's financial clout to be able to hire a piano player who could play a decent stride solo for a number like this, but the pianist in his band was clearly not up to it and Jools (who definitely is) had obviously been told to toe the line. I think the punk band got the sh*t end of the stick - only one minute 20 of their excellent stuff in order to make way for a second turgid Clapton tune. So far this series I make that two really decent acts - Imelda Mae and Bellowhead.
It looked like Chris Stainton on piano. Could be wrong, but if it was, that is a man with serious and respected track record. Maybe he was also just bored out of his brains.
11. As it's usually me that gives the glare of death to others who cock up, I make sure I don't make the same mistake twice. If anybody mentions my cock up afterwards I simply say "Yeah, thought I'd just try something a little different in that one but it didn't work so I'll just play it straight from now on"
12. A while ago, I did own a 7 string bass but it was strung B-F. I did not use it in a band situation, not due to anything other than that's not why I bought it. I mainly gig with a 5 string nowdays and the low B is enough for me (and my cones) I personally would have no use for a low F# but took great pleasure and amusement from the high F. Being a guitarist too, it was great for tapping, chords etc. Don't know how well defined the lowest notes would be on the F# but as you play the music you do, I guess it would work for you.
13. I would guess that most players on here with a little experience and currently playing in a band of some sort actually have quite a lot of theory under their belts but just don't realise it because they didn't take formal lessons or troll through theory books. There is a big difference between actually not having any theory and just not knowing all the terminology. Most have some sort of theory albeit self taught via experience but it's probably subconcious. I would imagine that the two go hand in hand to compliment each other.
14. Yes, most annoying and unwelcome. Seems you get 2 seconds to hit the "bass products" tab and then it stops.

16.
I was wondering about that.......I get the impression the seller knows nothing about what he's trying to sell!
He also points out that the neck is straight as if that's some sort of bonus you're getting for $13,000
17. Come on, they're not all this bad. I play in a rock band with two guitarists and we all have the same attitude of "you need to tell me if it's sh*t" and we all tell each other when it is. No egos whatsoever. Youngest 36, oldest (me) 58
18.
I got a flat tyre on the A64 last week and Chris Wolstenholme pulled over and helped me change the wheel, and then he taught me to play Hysteria, lovely geezer. I tried flagging down that ****er Alain Caron first but he pretended he hadn't seen me, ***hole.
I agree about Alain Caron, we had him round to do some plastering in the hallway and never came back to do the finish coat and, I'd paid him up front. However, we had the last laugh because he left this in the front garden when he loaded his van up.
19. If I've not had a combo at any point and have been using a seperate amp and cab. I have always (through lack of experience maybe) opted for the same manufacturer. Last rig was an Eden WT500 and a 4x10 Eden cab, as I assume that good manufacturers will make amps and cabs that compliment each other.
20. I may use a few chords if I'm on a 6 string, played fairly high up the register. I tend to put them into intros if there's enough space before the full band kicks in otherwise it all gets lost in the general racket. I only do it if it's going to fit the number. Great fun.
21.
Not very often that I feel compelled to think 'wtf' but what was that first track all about! I may not be a Blues fan but as a musician I thought I'd appreciate at least something about that track... Nope!
Oh dear, Bronzy must have been bored out of his brains. I think it was after about 2 minures he decided to play a second note. I think I bought one of his old basses about 12 years ago. or he bought one of mine, can't remember which way round it was now. But yeah, what a weird uninspiring song. Prefered the Fats Waller track.
22.
the lost boys soundtrack is pretty good, if you are 80's inlined of course................. i'll get my coat
Leave your coat where it is. Cry little sister is a seriously great number. For me, Midnight run and Christine.
23. As I'd only recently joined a standard covers band, I didn't think I'd have a say yet but I've already got "On the road again" and "I'd rather go blind" dropped The latter being so boring , I started to add the hammond with my right hand while the keys player played sax. Still, they're gone now.
24.
Sounds like time well spent. Shame some luthiers don't loom very large outside of their own country. Any chance of some piccys please ?
You're right, there are so many great luthiers here and in the UK that don't get the recognition they deserve. I met a few people there complaining about some of the 2,000 - 3,000 euro prices but speaking to some of these small builders who are doing it as a living, they are only making 6 - 8 instruments a year with hundreds of hours work going into each one. I'll get a couple of pics from a friend who was with me. It was at the Festival des guitares et lutieres at Issoudun. I used all my phone battery up on videos of acoustic guitarists who made me want to give up. In the meantime, here's a link to his site. http://ubass.free.fr/ And one to the festival. http://www.issoudun-guitare.com/
