1. Here's the rock band set. I know it's all the obvious stuff but we are in France after all. It's what they know. The boys are back in town Don’t believe a word Jailbreak Whiskey in the jar Shoot to thrill Highway to hell You shook me all night long You could be mine Paradise city Sweet child of mine Smoking in the boy’s room Can’t get enough of your love Hush Sharp dressed man Born to be wild Black night Lights out in London Hard to handle You really got me Rock and roll The hunter Dead or alive Comfortably numb Pretty vacant Word up Doctor doctor Hotel California Rockin in the free world
2. Why do I feel guilty every time I look at this post. I'd have this but as I'm in France, it'd end up as £120 with delivery. He's 12 for God's sake and making the effort to work and save up. One of you a bit nearer must have £35 to start your nipper off on guitar. Worst way, it's a bump.
3. This is bordering on Ritchie Blackmore sending Rod Evans and Nick Simper round the pub for fags and them being told by the landlord he'd heard they were leaving Deep Purple. I'd fix an audition under a different name and embarrass them when you turn up.
4. I've done my homework, locked in to the drummer, a nice groove, on time and easy to get on with = good audition. Late, + look what I can do = disaster.
5. This is the nearest place I know (from me) They're in Holland and they speak English. I guess a good courier could get it there. http://www.wurlitzer-epservice.nl/joomla/
6. Great band Gentle Giant. Remeber them (well most of them) as Simon Dupree and the big sound.
7. Keep up the private practice and one day.....your singer will have one beer too many at a gig and you'll save the day. In the words of Rick Wakeman. Good luck is only when preparation meets opportunity. Go for it.
8. Maybe you're just being slighlty more open to other types of music and, at the same time, developing a style that's really you.
9. If you're happy with what you play, how you play it, and it gets you gigs, why fix it if it isn't broken. Although, there will obviously be a strong argument for improving if you feel the need to move on from whatever level you are at.
10.
So, 30 hours to go. I've worked out most of the songs - 60's covers - beatles, stones, move, kinks, searchers, roy orbison, etc. Now got to learn them and practise them. Assume it's ok to have a music stand, just for reminders? I'm sure I used to have skin on my plucking fingers ( yes, plucking ) And I used to be able to feel the fretting ones. Any tips on protecting the plucking ones - plasters ?
If I get a cut or split on a finger, I always dip the tips in Superglue. Comes off by the end of the evening and doesn't really affect what I do. So, you could give them a dab before the gig. If it does wear off too soon, at least you've had the benefit for the first set.
11. In order of preference The Rippingtons ,Family, Kool & the gang and Tony McAlpine's band (Maximum security days)
12. I think you'd have more scope tone-wise with a 2x10 cab or combo as opposed to a 1x15 but it's all down to taste. In your price range there's loads to choose from. Ashdown combos seem to very popular and do a good job. Peaveys are well worth the money and ultra reliable. Loads secondhand floating about. charic is right about go for 300 watts as you can always turn it down in a pub but your lost if you need more. Try to avoid Behringer as they have a low resale value if you want a change and usually get slated although I have no experience of them. Line 6 is another good option (I'm not on commission) Top of your budget would also get you one of the smaller Eden heads and a cheap cab. So, also look at the Nemesis range. I just picked up an N250 combo on ebay (never been used) for £130. Okay it's a 1x15 but great for small venues and rehearsals.
13. I once bought a guitar because it was the only musical instrument at a boot-sale and sort of felt I had to.
14. Enjoy your gig and best of luck. If it's a payer, you can go to the pictures, buy 10 fags, have fish and chips on the way home and STILL have your bus fare just like I remember.
15. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ENGLISH-STATUS-STEIN...=item19bfef5204 I reckon he's got the model and the previous owner's price a bit mixed up too.
16. Keep all my guitars and basses in one location with a cheap dehumidifier on, set to 50%. Never had a problem.
17.
I have a dilemma you can all help me with. I want to form a tribute band to make loads of money and stay in hotels in Dubai but I can't afford any new gear so the question is, which bands have a bass player who uses a Wal fretless and has a big enough following to guarantee loads of gigs. I tried a Brand X tribute but it went nowhere. PS I look like Rolf Harris
You could just start playing anything and then ask the audience.... "Do you know what is yet?"
18. Sorry if you've all seen this before but I hadn't. Spinal Tap on..Jazz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wscZhvj_lH4
19.
I am getting together with 3 members of my very first band to do 3 surprise gigs (private parties) as a sort of support act for the main band. We haven’t played together for many, many years and two of the new members (rhythm guitar and drums) of this venture, although competent musicians, are young guys who haven’t gigged before. So my question is this, can you suggest about 12 songs that are fun and easyish to play, usually go down a storm and that most age ranges (16 - 60) will have heard of? We want to play melodic rock, so obviously no death metal but not too poppy (sp?) either. We are just at the talking/jamming stage at the moment, the two young guys are both nervous and excited. I realize this is a bit of a long winded question but any advice would be gratefully received. Cheers, Nick.
Assuming you have no keyboards, you could try a few like (as it's all age groups) Born to be wild Whiskey in the jar Another brick in the wall (if you have 2 guitarists) Message of love Rock & roll Breaking the law Summer of 69 Best of luck
20.
EIther that or the music that stretches the bass player is too hard for the guitarist and drummer to pull off!! Give the audience what you assume they want, I say.
I'd agree with that if my old drummer didn't come on here for a nose around. Oh, bugger.
21. A bright magenta Vester 4 string. (copy of a Bass Collection which are copies of Tune) Absolutely unplayable. Took it back to the shop same day and Mr "I'll show off my slap technique to all the novices" picked it up, played 4 notes and told his mate to put it in the back and let me choose another bass. A used Hohner Jack. Great bass.
22. I use two basses at gigs. A jazz 4 and a BN5. I don't run the BN5 passive mode so I have the Jazz plugged into an Aphex Exciter. Hitting the switch saves me resetting any EQ on the amp.
23. Thanks to everyone who answered. Will pass on info. Cheers all
