This is bordering on Ritchie Blackmore sending Rod Evans and Nick Simper round the pub for fags and them being told by the landlord he'd heard they were leaving Deep Purple. I'd fix an audition under a different name and embarrass them when you turn up.

I've done my homework, locked in to the drummer, a nice groove, on time and easy to get on with = good audition. Late, + look what I can do = disaster.

Regret selling these two.

Great band Gentle Giant. Remeber them (well most of them) as Simon Dupree and the big sound.

Keep up the private practice and one day.....your singer will have one beer too many at a gig and you'll save the day. In the words of Rick Wakeman. Good luck is only when preparation meets opportunity. Go for it.

Maybe you're just being slighlty more open to other types of music and, at the same time, developing a style that's really you.

If you're happy with what you play, how you play it, and it gets you gigs, why fix it if it isn't broken. Although, there will obviously be a strong argument for improving if you feel the need to move on from whatever level you are at.

Comes off by the end of the evening and doesn't really affect what I do. So, you could give them a dab before the gig. If it does wear off too soon, at least you've had the benefit for the first set.

In order of preference The Rippingtons ,Family, Kool & the gang and Tony McAlpine's band (Maximum security days)

I think you'd have more scope tone-wise with a 2x10 cab or combo as opposed to a 1x15 but it's all down to taste. In your price range there's loads to choose from. Ashdown combos seem to very popular and do a good job. Peaveys are well worth the money and ultra reliable. Loads secondhand floating about. charic is right about go for 300 watts as you can always turn it down in a pub but your lost if you need more. Try to avoid Behringer as they have a low resale value if you want a change and usually get slated although I have no experience of them. Line 6 is another good option (I'm not on commission) Top of your budget would also get you one of the smaller Eden heads and a cheap cab. So, also look at the Nemesis range. I just picked up an N250 combo on ebay (never been used) for £130. Okay it's a 1x15 but great for small venues and rehearsals.

I once bought a guitar because it was the only musical instrument at a boot-sale and sort of felt I had to.

Enjoy your gig and best of luck. If it's a payer, you can go to the pictures, buy 10 fags, have fish and chips on the way home and STILL have your bus fare just like I remember.

Keep all my guitars and basses in one location with a cheap dehumidifier on, set to 50%. Never had a problem.

A bright magenta Vester 4 string. (copy of a Bass Collection which are copies of Tune) Absolutely unplayable. Took it back to the shop same day and Mr "I'll show off my slap technique to all the novices" picked it up, played 4 notes and told his mate to put it in the back and let me choose another bass. A used Hohner Jack. Great bass.

I use two basses at gigs. A jazz 4 and a BN5. I don't run the BN5 passive mode so I have the Jazz plugged into an Aphex Exciter. Hitting the switch saves me resetting any EQ on the amp.
