Great link, I loved it. There's a band here called the 3 little pigs with the same line up. They even do Jaco numbers, complete with all the solos. Anyway, thanks for that.

From memory, we used to play it in E so the guitar/keys chords behind the sax intro and lead solo are A G E D (although the sax part and lead solos work perfectly well over an Em instead of the E) Then again, I could be talking complete bollocks.
They always are on Ray 5's. Still very playable, though.
Had a few mates who were always moaning about the G coming off the side of the fingerboard although I guess they could have done something about it if they wanted to.

Had a Yamaha years ago. Fabulous quality for the money. Hope you enjoy it.

anyone know any really cool bass tricks
I don't know if you could call it a trick, more of an amazing facility with a six-string acoustic. At a folk-club in the back of a pub near Romford, a guitarist played normally, then in mid-song, without missing a beat, flipped the guitar over and played it left-handed... and back & fore several times!! In those days he was known as "Shaggis". By 1977 or so he was better known as Davey Johnstone, Elton John's guitarist. Balcro.
Was that in the Kings head in the old market place? -
It's Free/Bad company/Paul Rodgers/Queen stuff. Basically covering Paul Rodgers' career.
That sounds like a great gig to get. Can't go wrong with that stuff. Best of luck tonight. Ps, after Free and before Bad Company, I saw Paul Rogers in another band he'd put together called Peace. Only saw them once at the Cook's Ferry Inn in Edmonton. Think it fell to bits after about 4 gigs and then he had Bad Company up and running.

Fun song recommendations for the bass

I know what you mean. I got turned down for a glam rock tribute for no apparent reason.

If money were no object, what bass would you have?
leschirons replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
Preferably one with a built in ability switch. -
Glad to see you've kept the best combo in the world. Not everyone loves them but mine has been a peach and I'd never part with it.
I've just finished five weeks' worth of professional pantomime at the Sheffield Lyceum theatre & it's suddenly dawned on me that the daily 120 mile round trip to Sheffield I've been doing since forever & perpetual life in a dark orchestra pit is now at an end and I'm going back to my old life tomorrow morning, instrumental teaching in schools as well as my other professional playing commitments. It's a sort of weird feeling, as I've been doing nothing else but getting up and going to the theatre & coming back to sleep for the last few weeks. (Weather permitting!) The panto was excellent & although Toyah Willcox was the big name, Damian Williams (the new guy on "Are you smarter than a ten year old?") kept us on our toes and laughing our heads off for the whole run as the dame, "Nurse Nellie." The whole crew from Sheffield Theatres and Evolution productions were excellent, apart from the constant problems we had with the sound engineers, but that's to be expected when you put your sound into the hands of incompetent morons, I suppose. The playing new year is looking rosy with a lot of shows in the diary, sixty big band jobs leading to a tv series already booked & a repeat booking for the same band on next year's production at the Lyceum, Peter Pan. Has anyone else got an exciting bass-playing year coming up? Rich.
Back as house bass after standing aside for someone else who it seems is always too busy to go to the venue, Got a couple of rehearsals this week and next week in the studio to do a six track demo for one of the bands. Apart from that, looking forward to a couple of slices of pate' on toast in about 10 minutes. So, pretty much the same as you.

Don't know a best bass shop as I usually buy off mates, ebay or the last time, from the States. Worst? (don't think it's fair to name them) but it's in a sleepy little Norflok town. The boss makes a point of playing every bass the punters would like to try and proceeds to slap at a zillion miles an hour, thus putting off "novices and some intermediates" with his "see what I can do" attitude.

G & L is worth a look for that budget too.
My lost prophets gig experience was similar. At the last song of the night, the singer dived into the crowd, and someone nicked his shoes (bear in mind it was in Norwich! ) so he got back on stage, said "You don't nick people's shoes! (isn't it)" in a heavy welsh accent then stormed off and played no encores. Pansies.
It would only happen in Norwich as they're the only other ones with six toes.

Just why is blues so important when learning bass?
leschirons replied to iconic's topic in General Discussion
Blues bass can get slated a bit by musos as easy and boring, until you hear someone like Tommy Shannon or Roscoe Beck doing it. It is without doubt a great place to start as the lick library comes up so often in other genres of music. I spent 3 years in a blues band here on guitar and then swapped with the bassplayer as he fancied playing guitar again after 20 years. At first, I thought I'd made a mistake but then realised it could be as exciting as I wanted it to be. It seemed to lift the band a bit too as I was obviously playing differently to the previous bassplayer. Not necessarily better, just different. It encouraged one or two of them to play different stuff too. Especially the keyboard player. It doesn't have to be just "donk da donk da donk da donk" -

This one has distinct advantages. He hits the lead singer in the face. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X3qnTr_KD4...AF6&index=7
Yes, indeedy! Ancient git here would like to give it a try, but I'm a bit puzzled as to how to go about it. Is there any way to practice the manoeuvre? Do you have to start small and work up, maybe hang a medium-sized banana round your neck on a bit of string?
I'm going to start by putting strap-locks on the OLP today. Hoping I don't have to dig out a satin shirt with a big sticky-up collar. That may be counter-productive.
I assume we mean like as in this rather understated performance. Ahem!
Yup, just like that but I seem to remember Vai doing it the other way round ie, headstock first. Still any way works for me. Thanks for the link. I think I need a light bass or a cheap guitar to practice with. I've also seen the two guitarists out of Poison do a crossing in mid-air swap. That's cool too. I'll have a word with our guitarist, Butter-fingers du bois.
