1.
There was a youtube thing on here the other week where a bass player tried it at a gig and the bass flew off and crashed onto the floor. It was hilarious. I can't find it though.
I don't want to hear that. I'm gonna go for this. At 58 years old (soon) I need to get some stage antics back in the rock band set. It's either this, or learing to Moonwalk and we don't do Billy Jean.
2.
Guilty. I did it a few times with my Fender Jazz a few years ago. I don't do it anymore.
Don't say it like you're embarrassed. I bet it went down a storm. Out here in France it would probably be seen as the coolest thing ever as they're about 20 years behind. I was sort of hoping for a few tips as to what type of strap you had and method to avoid ruining a bass or burning my neck. I have a wireless system which I imagine I'd need.
3. Hi, from La Creuse. Nice bass (and stonework)
4. Anyone on here ever done, or tried, the flipping round the neck guitar or bass swingy thing like Steve Vai?
5. I don't play with any bands that write their own songs so I guess if we're just doing covers that I should really just learn the correct lines but often don't. Sometimes I feel that I'd like to play songs differently if I feel that the line would improve the song for us or even make it easier for me as I cover most male lead vocals. Having said that, I'm always appreciative of any constructive criticism and am always prepared to listen to other suggestions. I'm not precious, or Victor Wooten (who I suspect is still open to learning) so what others suggest could potentially, be a far better option to what I've played. I do get annoyed with band members that are not open to discussion about what they play. IMO, you don't even need to be a musician to figure out if something is not quite suitable. But some I've come across (mainly, no, in fact always drummers) who think that because they've owned a kit for 20 years, no-one has any right to talk about their playing or sound. Our guitarist is trying to organise a recording session at his studio for our function band demo but in true form, after speaking to the drummer about how he (the guitarist) would like to record the drums, the old "who does he think he is" reared it's ugly head. Bloody politics.
6. I never learned any theory and look where it got me.
7. I have an OLP (first model) and it's instant Bernard Edwards. It cost me €100
8. The Madness version of "It must be love" great fun, great song. Just thought of the other one that I get right into. Lido Shuffle.
9. Not really that modern but Hush (Kula Shaker version) is a great crowd pleaser. So are.... Take me to the river Mony Mony (Billy Idol version) Vertigo Times like these All my life Message in a bottle Roxanne Kiss All the small things Basket case
10. Learn to play Mandolin take up the Violin again (it's been 40 years) Find a drummer that has a metronome in his head
11.
they had a trussart steelcaster bass at bassday uk 09, i didn't get chance to sit with it, but i've fancied one for a while.
I've never tried one either. It's just something I reckon I'd buy if I won the lottery and hope it played as great as it looks.
12.
i must be the loan bass player of gurnsey
And probably the richest on Basschat if you live there.
13. That's quite cool. I don't mind the rivets. The shape is not really for me but I can see why some love it. Now THIS, I would love. It's a Trussart and he's been making Steelcasters for years. Seriously not cheap though.
14.
In my world there's considerable difference between saying that you don't like something or that it doesn't float your boat and labeling it lame The interweb however is a flawed medium for expressing oneself.
Isn't this just due to the way that our language has evolved though? Max could've said it was "sad" and we would all know what he would have meant by that as in "not to his liking" and not taken the literal meaning of the word sad. I think a couple of people on here have taken a throw-away comment too seriously. (I'm not suggesting you have, it's just that I think some people use terms in different ways to other people)
15. I've got twins but can't show them here. (They're Black Strats)
16. Head back, eyes closed Jack Bruce stance. Usually just before hitting an Eb when it should have been E (I never learn)
17.
I think this is true for most of us, just in terms of what makes us take something off the wall in the shop. I personally wouldn't touch a BC Rich bass even if it was set up beautifully and played like a dream. Equally I am sure there are people who feel like this about Fender. Obviously to counter balance this I wouldn't buy a bass if it played badly or didn't feel right but certainly the initial attraction is down to looks.
Spot on. It's the same thing as the first girlfriend or boyfriend that you don't know yet. You wouldn't think "I'll go and talk to her, she looks like she might have a nice personality" It's down to initial visual appeal. Although, from time to time I have borrowed a mates bass that I wouldn't give house room to due to looks and been seriously impressed afterwards.
18. If you're not a pro band and one guy is taking the only other payment out of the equation (having fun) Get rid of him.
19. Been on a five now for about 16 years out of about 20 and like the previous poster, hit the B instead of the E a few times but the constant p*** taking soon gets you over that. I still use a 4 for particular songs but only due to the sound I need. Once you've done a few weeks with it, it will seem completely natural. Recently (2 years) I moved on to 6 strings and apart from the neck width, it's no problem. Mainly play the five though. A sort of all things to all men type of bass from my point of view. I wouldn't look too deep for any advice or tips on this issue. At the end of the day, it's just a bass with one more string that's really handy sometimes.
20. Is that the actual bass you've got? I guess if you bought it off of Beaver recently it's probably worth about the same as you paid for it. It certainly wouldn't have gone down as his prices are pretty keen to start with.
21.
Any BC'ers like Tune basses ? I bought one recently (Japanese manufactured Bass Maniac) , and cant seem to put it down,.. I love it.
Yup, I'm a fan. Been looking for one of the natural 6 stringers for about five years now. I know someone on here has one so I'm always on the lookout for it coming up in the marketplace. Great basses and really worth the money.
22.
Hi guys i just finish that it came out as an idea i had a clear pickguard and then suddenly poped my mind. I am fan of comis and i wanted a bass painted with comics but this is very difficult so i thout of cutting an image and put it behind it what u think? Do you like it or you prefer it like it was before? Before After
Bloody hell Manos, if you'd TOLD me you were going to do that, I'd never have sold it to you. Ha ha. But now I've seen it, it looks seriously cool. You've no chance of buying the F bass now though in case you put a big pair of tits on it.
23.
Bump for this for a real gent to deal with
Hi mate, thanks for that and great to hear from you. How's the fretless Ray going?
24. Fedex cost me $250 for a three day service that took a week and then I copped a charge of €500 import and TVA (VAT)
25. Just a quick word about a thread like this. (As I've been there) Sometimes, being a member of Basschat can come up in conversation from time to time with other band members. These posts are viewable by guests. They can usually work out if it's someone they know. I had a pop at a drummer I played with once and he saw the post. Tricky.
