Most fun job in the world. House bass, open mic night.
Whoever suggests Red House at a jam should have a finger chopped off!!
Blues is huge here (unfortunately) and that one comes up at least once every time. As usual, it was a guitarist's turn up on stage and his big opportunity to endlessly widdle and strut. However, as I always have to sing it, I tend to cut in with a verse when I get bored with them being too self indulgent. Get's me a few evil looks but who cares. -
If you ever get the chance to do this, do it. It's great fun, highs and lows for sure and a bit of danger depending on who you're playing for. There are always a few who have a strange idea on how a song goes but that's half the fun and in light of recent events, I needed a bit of light relief. Tonight, I got to play, Bucket Use somebody Highway to hell Shoot to thrill Hotel California Help the poor Baby please don't go Red house Crossroads Sunday with the flu Come together Reality (80's euro ballad) and the highlight of the evening, Manhatten by Eric Johnson What great mix of songs. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Even turned me on to the the Kings of Leon to be honest.

I do 90% of lead vocals in one band and 50% in the other so I need to be looking out, straight ahead at the punters.

No effects whatsoever for the 5 string but an Aphex exciter for the passive 4 string jazz

Bass player's answer Esperanza if you're a jazz man and TOP if you fancy a funkier evening or as Bilbo says, try and get two gigs in. Shallow answer, put their pictures up side by side on your screen and choose the obvious. Sorry, but she is seriously fit.
Agree with you on Rod the Mod, Maggie May, but didn`t Ronnie Wood play bass on Rod`s early solo stuff when he was still in the Faces? But agree with you, Ronnie Lane had great feel. Try and find a live version of the faces song "3 button hand me down". It was on a TOPTP2 special. Just found a link, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeZ4FMIVqto Jez
You're right, Ronnie Wood was playing bass with RS right back from the Jeff Beck group days and then the faces. -
Voodoo Chile, eh? I've always wanted to go to Chile.
Yup, I believe that's how it's really spelt and listed on the single (3 track EP I think)
-
As far as I'm aware they're not playing Voodoo Child but Voodoo Chile. The former is the Electric Ladyland track. They're playing the "slight return" which is Voodoo Chile.
I'd be wary of any teacher who imposes a "This is the right technique" regime - what's not right for him may be very comfortable & natural for you. There are plenty of excellent players who's techniques are very idiosyncratic & would be frowned at by the "Correct Technique Nazis"..
+1 for that. Technique can be a very personal thing. I suppose there are some "goes without saying" problems that can be adressed but go with what is best for you rather than someone else as you could find yourself adopting their bad habits. Anyway, try and get your mits around Hysteria by Muse if you're into them. Another obvious choice is Rhythm stick by Ian Drury. I wish by Stevie Wonder is a great groove if you you're up for a bit of Funk or if you're a Metal head, Run to the hills by Iron Maiden for an aerobic workout.

Welcome to Basschat Biscuit. Enjoy the forums. I used to be known as "The Wafer" but I've put on some weight in recent years so now I'm "The Bun"

The old 'what amp should I get?' chestnut
leschirons replied to holio.cornolio's topic in Amps and Cabs
Check out the Trace combo in the marketplace section for amps and cabs. It's only £250. Great for a bit of Funk and Rock. -
Looking for a pretty song to sing/play
leschirons replied to Jobiebass's topic in General Discussion
Especially nice if you have a fretless but it works fine without. "Coming back to life" by the Floyd. This sounds really pretty with just a voice over it and it doesn't matter how slow you want to play it. Just a nice song that works well with chords. Just follow the first keyboard part and then keep it that tempo for the rest of the song. -
Not often at all when playing. But singing!!! I end up standing there like a lemon as the intro goes round a third time.

I fancy buying another guitar that's becoming available shortly so need to clear a few bits out. This started out by me buying a body from a luthier here who'd just started supplying his own bodies. I then got a clone Tele neck off french ebay. I decided to be a bit different and added a Strat bridge (that works) and a pair of Epiphone Alnico V pick-ups (new) These were fitted by the luthier. It looks great and leaving any labour aside, I'm not likely to get my money back but hey-ho, it was an adventure. The headstock decal was added by the luthier and it also carries a Fender California neck plate just to complete the look. THIS IS NOT A GENUINE TELECASTER but plays, looks and feels superb. Can't really see in the pics but fingerboard is nicely figured. I can give anyone buying, a padded gig bag and could get the guitar to the UK next week. The bits alone stand me in 310 Euros but in reality I know it's probably only worth about £275. (Hope so anyway) The whole thing stands me in excess of 400 Euros. It is more or less pristine and it's only issue (with me anyway) is the pick-guard was over cut at the neck joint by about 1.5mm. Cheers for looking.

Sorry, thought I'd get involved. Below is the answer from BC Rich about 20 minutes ago. Hi Keith, That was a Handcrafted Mockingbird Standard - gloss black in the pic you attached. I'm not sure of the year. He also used a white Handcrafted Eagle Standard in the movie with reflective tape applied to the body. Not sure of the year on that one either but I did see it for sale by him on Ebay a few years ago . TK So, I imagine if they don't know all the facts, you're on a loser to get all the info.

Sold one here in France last year and got £499 for it. Not bad nick and played lovely but as usual, everything finds it's correct price due to bidding and who's looking for one at that time. I'd say £495 - £595 for yours.
-
Don't try and make an RB as there's a lot more to it than a few bits. Graphite rods in the neck, offset pole pieces on the pickups, the bridge and the neck profile all add up to the sound and playabilty. Save up and get a real one. Had one from 97 to last year and regret selling.

Personally, I like Marcus Miller's playing but I'm not a fan of this particular vid either as I think Edgar Winter does a better job with this song. Your original brief it seems was to check out Marcus Miller. There's plenty of other stuff of his that you may like. I've met some players in the past that because they hate one track from whichever band, they tend to tar the whole discography with the same brush. Similar to those who say EVERYTHING by Miles Davis for example, MUST be great because it's by him. I'm sure if he were still alive he'd be the first to admit he'd played and recorded some sh*t in his lifetime. Give Marcus Miller another chance and check out some other stuff like Bubinga5's vid posting about "Run for cover" Still may not be for you, then fair enough.

I know this should really be in "How was your gig last night" but I feel it's more allied to playing bass. Got in about 45 mins ago from a gig. There were about 150 people there and it was an informal dinner type jobby. With that many in the audience over here, you'd usually find about 4 - 6 musos and you'll end up in the occaisional jam/free for all. Usually mind numbingly slow blues but not tonight. I had the pleasure of having to play 3 songs I knew (in my head) but had never actually got around to playing before. I'd really forgotten how great they were. Scottish girl said she wanted a go at singing. She could do it. Up on the roof, Will you still love me tomorrow and You got a friend. So, a serious King / Goffin fan. Not difficult to busk but what great numbers. Sorry to sound like a 57 year old but they don't write them like that any more.

Blimey, no-one's mentioned Rush (check out Hemispheres for great examples) or Fish out of water by Chris Squire.
-
+1 for that. Even got my two kids loving this track ten years ago. Seen him do it live twice now. He sometimes plays this as his opening number. Everyone knows it and it's straight into groove city when he kicks it off. Funilly enough, both times I've seen it live, he's dispensed with the intro solo. I suppose he wants to hit you in the face with it. It certainly works. I would think this track is as much responsible for getting people onto bass as anything by Mark King, if you're into funky-jazz.

Dispite the quality of the songs and the enjoyment you get from actually playing them, this is a 5% pros and 95% cons situation. You know in your heart already what you really need to do. These people will make your life a misery. Walk away.

Maybe it's just what some people want to spend their money on and don't need anybody else to "see the point"
