1. I would think a Markbass 2x10 combo would be perfect for you. Not as dear as you think secondhand.
2. Used a WT500 for years and only changed it due to the weight of the whole rig (Eden cabs) Doesn't sound a bad price and highly reliable with tone to die for. Regret selling it now. Many players reverse (and improve) the airflow on the WT range by simply turning the fan round. They even admitted it worked better on the Eden forum.
3. Was sort of expecting a picture or do I have to say "yes, I would"?
4. In about two years time after you've got hooked on the gear and bought a couple of Ampeg 8x10's and a couple of heads, you'll wish you'd stayed with the drums. Welcome.
5. Welcome Gerald, nice to see another member from France AND with a BN5. I also joined to help improve my English, because I'm from Essex.
6. A truly great player and his son is a pretty damn hot drummer too.
7. Get the biggest amp you can afford (S/h Peavey, great value for money) The Combo 300 is a killer. Google any tech/electronics questions you're too embarrased to ask although there's no need to be. Any advice on where to start with theory will be gladly given on the forums here. There are a great number of great players and teachers here. (Not me) Find a band where you actually like the people and the music you're going to be playing Don't ask them what colour you are.
8.
Put them on an MP3 player and listen to the songs until they're embedded in your head, don't over-think them counting etc Get he feel. Then get your bass out.
+1 here. I get all the songs slotted in the brain-box first before I start playing. You should be able to "listen" to the whole song in your head.
9.
Rounds - if I wanted my bass to sound like it was being played in the shed at the bottom of the garden I'd buy a double bass
+1 Rounds. If I wanted my bass to sound like a bass, I'd take lessons.
10.
I love each of my instruments, but the Cort is my "go to" bass, the one I'm most comfortable on, and the one I'd take. To flip my original question the other way around: How easy/acceptable would it be for me to ask the band to play in the original ("my") key? Given that it's just for a couple of songs, and I've had no rehearsal time?
I wouldn't ask the band to change the key. You could make it difficult for the vocalist (assuming it's a vocal number) and you're also asking every other person on stage except the drummer to play it differently as opposed to just yourself changing key. If you make a cock-up on bass at a pub gig, about 2% of the audience will notice. If the vocalist is screeching to hit notes he can't achieve, everyone will notice. If you're not confident about it, then don't get up there.
11. Have you ever been in that situation where, after setting up, you stick on a really quiet background CD and "uncle Sidney" then asks you if it's going to be that loud all night?
12. And don't you just love that really optimistic " The meal will be finished at 8 p.m. sharp and the speeches will be finished by 8.30. Yeah right. I've done a few where we've started playing at 11.30 p.m. after the bride and groom had already pissed off.
13. You gotta check out a Roscoe Beck V They don't make them any more but well worth a try-out. Regret selling mine. You can find them for about £800.
14. Saturday's gig went well but had a slight problem over money. Last time we played there, they did no advertising whatsoever and ended up with 40 people. They paid, but were down about it. This time, we advertised the gig and got 200 punters in and they still asked if we could do it cheaper. I had to sort it out. We got our money.
15. At the time, you probably made the right decision and as Oldgit said, you probably kicked them up the arse enough to get their act together so congratulate yourself that you've helped them out. "They'd be nothing without me..etc...etc"
16. Best version of Gimme some lovin for sure.
17. Being bald and 57 years of age, I've just realised there is a god. I still have a 32" waist.
18. His name's Gary and he's based in Essex.
19. 41? bits of kids on the bloody forum now. (Welcome)
20. wecum too basechat, the home of reeson and literasy.
21. I use both passive and active basses for gigs so I have an Aphex exciter in line and just switch it on when I use the passive bass.
22. Beautiful lump that. Always had a hankering however, may be worth looking at some old posts (Crazy Kiwi I think) apparently Ken Smith is not the most "forgiving" person to deal with if you need any back-up or support. I'm jealous though.
23. Apart from the finish (paintwise) truly a great bass for no bucks compared to a Stingray. Don't think you'll be dissapointed.
24. Early Jap made Tunes are great quality. (Newer ones not so bad either) Seem to remember the bassist in Aswad using one. They made a fabulous 6 string bass also. Heard one at a function one night many years ago. The guy was a good player admittedly but it was only through an old Trace 715 and sounded superb. Really high tech. I reckon you've had a serious result. Cheapest 4 I've seen has been about €600 here and about £450 in the UK.
