They're not renowned as a slapper's bass at all. I think you'd be dissapointed if that's the reason you want one. As most of the other chatters have said, a good Jazz bass will cover 99% of everything and slap great. Having said that, they're well made, seem to hold their price and look seriously cool. If your trying for a swap, have a look at a Status. You can probably pick up an energy or energy artiste for not a lot of money and even find a staright swap if you're lucky. They'll do a great job in the slapping dept.

Yes, nice to hear about a shop that looks after it's punters. Enjoy your new bass.
Bonjour et bienvenue a Basschat! Il y a un prix pour la basse? C'est tres belle, je suis un pue interessant! Je regrette, je ne parle pas la francais! Merci! Mike
Seems a tad strange to say you're sorry you don't speak French when you replied in French. -
Erm.... had a look at the headstock in question. Although the 'hole' could be copyrighted, I'm sure Ernie Ball hold trading and manufacturing rights over the 4+1 machine head configuration. AND they are very much on the ball with the old CAD's.
My Fender Roscoe Beck was 4 over 1??

Considering I was in an Essex Rock band at the time, (Whitesnake, Focus, Satriani etc) The Girl from Ipanema came as a bit of a suprise request.
Very nice. ? Now you've got me, and I AM old. Did some googling and it seems they were introduced by Rowntrees in the 50's and never really caught on.
It was the for-runner to Picnic

I don't have a pic of me that doesn't make me look like a bloke that shouts in the street and looks for cold chips in bins. -
Bass Challenge: What the hell is this bass?
leschirons replied to ron s's topic in General Discussion
I seem to remember "Kay" did a lawsuit precision in about 81-82. Might be worth investigating that one. -
spangles! that's a blast from the past, nice bass too
What about Nux bars and Frys chocolate cream bars. I seem to remember they did a white one, a mint one AND a different fruity flavours one. About the same time as Jublees and Jamborie bags. I remeber having a Goblin Teasmaid as well. She was really nice. Latvian I think.
Hi! I'm Dave and i'm selling my 2001 Fender USA Roscoe Beck Signature 5 string. I'm selling the bass for £750 or very near offer and postage would cost £15 with TNT next-day courier. It's a beautiful bass in almost perfect condition, however almost all of the gigs I now play are on upright bass so it's time to say goodbye! I bought it from The Bass Cellar in London in 2001 and still have all the original paperwork (I've included a picture of the original receipt). I’ve mostly used it for studio recording and jazz gigs and it’s always been fanatically cared for. The instrument itself is perfectly set-up with a new set of Ernie Ball strings. I work in a guitar shop in Liverpool and the guitar technician in the store regularly services and checks all my basses. Although the 4-string model can still be found in the Fender 08' catalogue, the production of the 5-string model has now stopped and is now definitely a highly-sought after collector's item. This really is a professional quality bass. It was designed hand-in-hand by top session-bassist Roscoe Beck and Fender. The 'Bill Lawrence Quad Coil' custom passive pickups were specially made for this bass to defeat the problems that Roscoe Beck had found in other 5-strings. The sound of this bass is incredibly versatile. You really can dial in pretty much any Fender tone you can think of… There is a mini-toggle switch for each pickup which gives you the option of single-coil (for a classic Jazz Bass sound), parallel (Jazz Bass with no hum and slightly lowered highs), and series (a big fat Precision Bass sound). The tone knob also had a push-pull function on it that will slightly lower the output of the neck pickup so you can get that perfect growly 'Jaco' sound. The construction and hardware of this bass is absolutely top notch as well. The heavy duty ‘Gotoh’ bridge can be strung either thru-body or thru-bridge and the fingerboard is made from very rare Pau Ferro and is extremely smooth and fast to play. The 6-bolt neck is solid as a rock and very very rarely requires any adjustment. The bass comes with a very high quality British made Hiscox flight case as pictured. Unfortunately I sold the original case because I only ever use Hiscox cases anyway and i couldn't ever foresee wanting to sell the bass at the time... doh! There are 3 very small ‘dings’ in the body of the bass and i've included a close-up photo of these 3 marks. Apart from these there is very little to distinguish this bass from a brand new one. The only other sign that this is not a new bass is the small hole in the scratch-plate where I had a technician add a coil-tap to the pickups as an experiment. It turns out that the bass sounded better with it’s original wiring so it was changed back but unfortunately this left a small hole in the scratch-plate where the coil-tap switch had been placed. This really is a fantastic instrument and i'll be sorry to see it go. Please don't hesitate to e-mail me with any questions and good luck! Dave x
Hi Dave, Just a quick thought. If you don't find a buyer in the next few days, take a chance and stick it on French Ebay with a buy it now price of about 1,175 euros. I just sold my Roscoe Beck V there two days ago (1997 in Candy Apple) and I reckon I now hold the record for a sale. I put it on at 17.49 p.m. and it was sold by 17.51 p.m. Buy it now price was 1000 euros + delivery. The 5's are gold dust here in France and I now reckon I underpriced it for here. The buyer pays all the carriage and it's only £35 to send it here anyway. You can even do the write up in English as all the French musos speak proper language like us.

After a new 5 string, any recommendations?
leschirons replied to Sarah5string's topic in Bass Guitars
Hi, check out the OLP Tony Levin Stingray V Well within your budget at about £295 and possibly cheaper if you shop around. Real cool looker and I had a go on one last month. Was really suprised. It seriously kicked some great sounds out. Comfy to play and a classic design. Cheers K -
matches your floor!
Yes it does match the floor. Well spotted. I had the F Bass floor fitted 12 months ago by George Furlanetto himself. It was £1,310,267.00 but did not, strangely enough, come with a case.

Sorry to be a bore but here it is. Sold three guitars, two basses, one snare drum, a pair of hi-hats and both our children for this. I reckon it was worth it.

My bass sits naturally neck high so I keep the body down and my right wrist, fore-arm and fingers are as straight as possible as they pass over the top of the bass to reduce as much joint bending as possible.
Hi Guys. Clacton? That's somewhere up north isn't it? Maybe I should be more accurate - the Thames Delta in South Benfleet.
Not far from me then (not now, I'm in France) but we were BILLERICAY Welcome.

My F bass seriously damaged...Neck broken!
leschirons replied to geoffbassist's topic in General Discussion
As i was driving home today my boot came open, the bass fell out the car on the motorway and was runover many times in its case (overwater soft case). I had been driving for over an hour so it was a bit of a shock! luckly no one was hurt, except the bass.... Its a real nightmare, im a freelance bassist and this is my only instrument! I think i know someone who can lend me a bass to help over the christmas period but its a real blow, i really loved that bass, best ive ever owned. I think an email to fbass to find out how much a new neck would be is the best way forward as the rest of the bass is ok.... It was really dangerous though and im lucky i didnt cause an accident...
That's seriously upsetting (I'm waiting for a BN5 to arrive as we speak) If you contact George about a replacement neck, mention to him about a cosmetic second, I know he has a maple one there with a small grain stain on it around the 17th fret. It still looks great and would obviously be cheaper. You could then maybe get someone like Martin Peterson to fit it. Best of luck and so sorry. -
Sod the headstock design, you get "spunky" written on it. come on,how cool is that !!!
If that was my company, I'd bring out a 6 stringer called the "Jizzer"

Carole Kaye I reckon. Seem to remember she did the low end (upright) on an old Nancy Sinatra song called These boots are made for walking. First ever bassist to use defined quarter tones in a bass line. (for the intro)

Agree with Jakesbass 100% Whilst it's all changed in the UK in recent years with respect to where good stuff comes from ( you can list top recording and live bands from all over these days, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, and I believe Muse are Torbay in Devon based) the thing is, you need to get your face in the opportunity frame and I think London is the place to do that. Yes there's competition but it's where you'll make contacts in my opinion. Best of luck with whatever you decide. Nice to come across someone who's planning to make a career in bassplaying. Think most people just drift into it by default. It must mean you're focussed.

Hi Trev, I assume you weren't into the Roscoe Beck but bin the pics anyway. I stuck my toe in the water on French Ebay this afternoon at 17.49 pm and at 17.51 it'd been bought and paid for. I reckon that's some sort of record so it was probably too cheap. Best of luck with the search and swap. Keith
Ooo, that stings. Is it still cheaper even with the tax than buying it in Francoland?
To be honest Buzz, yes by about 800 euros so can't really grumble. Apparently as it was sent via FedEx, they do all the customs papers and it's automatically submitted. It's the same with UPS so, I've been told by a dealer here that I know, the best thing is to get it sent over by a smaller private courier or the US postal service. You can still get insurance but you then only have a 50/50 chance of it being picked up for duty. I would make it clear that in no way am I encouraging anyone to try and defraud the French or UK customs. That would be awful (yeah right) leschirons P.s, the bass in question is the one on the left.

Got home from mates house today, wife said, got some good, and some bad news. Gimme the bad first. (me) Better off with the good first. (wife) Go on then (me) They phoned up and said they'll deliver your new bass on Monday. (wife) Great, can't believe it's got here so quick from the USA. The bad news? (me) It was French customs that phoned up and they want another 480 euros (wife) Bo**ocks (me) Word of warning if you're in France, there's no getting round the 19.6 TVA (VAT) C'est la vie
