Never gig on NYE as we always throw a party. However, as there's always a good ten or so musos among the guests, I always set up some gear in the corner.

I take it all back about the guitarist not having spare strings after I turned up for tonight's gig. Post should have read What sort of roadie forgets the f*#$&*g mixing desk!! 😂 I'm not joking either.

Went to see a mate's band last night. Four piece that included two full time musicians. The guitarist (one of the two) breaks a top E. Finishes the number and announces a 5 min break as it's his only guitar. Second guitarist starts a number that he will sing to keep things going whilst the other searches his case, accessories bag, his jacket, other guitarist's case, bag of bits, his jacket, the bass player's case and bag only to find, there are no spare E strings. Finished the evening on a borrowed guitar. Nothing like being prepared is there??

Exactly this. We have a set list, but the singer tends to read the crowd as we go along and make changes as we need them. Last gig we did found 90% of the audience line dancing to Miss you, by the Stones. I think we extended the song to nearly 10 minutes. They loved it. So, if need be, do what you have to do, to make it work for that audience.

5 string 75% of the time, 6 the rest. Have a nice 4 string but only rarely play it, mainly out of guilt when it looks sadly down at me from the wall as I leave for a gig.

I recently bought a back up head on here as my main amp is a GB Shuttle 6.0 and I wanted something sans tube. Last night was a good opportunity to try it out at length so despite having set up the Shuttle combo, I set up a second rig with this Mark bass LM2 and the other GB 1x12 cab. Achieved my usual sound and played the gig. Guitarist says to me afterwards how much better and focussed my sound was. Just goes to show, what I thought was exactly the same, was totally different. Same cab, same bass, just the head, but to me, set up with my usual sound. Not sure how this equates to the OPs point other than my hearing is probably shot?

Great gig. It was a Beaujolais nouveau night with food. Wasn't expecting much tbh as the food element usually dictates that people are sitting / timing etc. However, crowd of 150 oldies like me, seriously up for it. They even made us do Highway to hell in memory of Malcolm as a last number? Great night, and good money and food (Beaujolais decidedly average though)

For me, anyone that supplies what the song requires. Current drummer is a lovely guy, good friend, brilliant sense of humour (for a frog) and reliable. He's not the best drummer I've played with by far but, he's flexible. All these lists add up to the same thing. Anyone I enjoy playing, and being with.

Wow, the "bassiest" of bassists. How much more bassiest can you get? None, none more bassiest.

Another thing is, I imagine that if you get to a really great ability level, you'll either end up always being frustrated that other band members don't quite cut it or, you're forever chasing the better gigs but possibly end up doing loads of stuff that you don't find satisfying.

They do a five slice? Is this from the custom shop?

So what's the diagnosis? Is there a cure? Is there medication? I only enquire as having been asked by my wife, daughter and son what I'd like for Xmas ( and they're happy to club together in this) I've asked for a quality four slice toaster.

Blue, Good post. I get why you asked the question. Okay, you might not be on the same level as say, Lee Sklar but the chances are you're getting more gigs than him? You love playing and it's paying your bills. So, you obviously play to a good enough level that allows that. If I wasn't slowing down my gigging scedule these days, I think I'd take your enthusiasm over his ability any time. There are many players who would kill for your gig dates.
