1. America by Nice Whiskey in the jar by Lizzie With a little help by Cocker but as a winner, yup has to be Hendrix and Watchtower for me.
2. Okay, Gregory Porter. Anyone know what's going on with that hat when he's indoors? Or, is there something I don't know about like alapecia or cheomo and I've put my foot in it.
3. Party anthems? Does that mean Mustang Sally and I love rock'n'roll?
4. Have to be that white Yamaha Nathan East. I think that would be the do it all bass for me.
5. Just heard. Yet another one. Not a fan but huge respect. Seems it was an infection. Real shame. Only 68 too.
6. Had one for two weeks which probably says a lot. I personally found it positively underwhelming in every respect. Bought it purely because it was an Alembic, back in the days when I could. Neck too deep for my liking, bass didn't balance well, sound was very wooly and lower mid biased. Restrung it, just the same. It was heavy too. Eventually came to the conclusion that superb playability doesn't actually have a lot to do with price. Maybe it was just not a nice one, or just not for me. Got a couple of mates who swear by Alembics though so all down to personal choice. Try it out and make a judgement.
7. I understand that the police are unwilling to get involved in lots of stuff these days but they seem to be putting across the message that they don't consider deliberate fraud to be a criminal offence anymore.
8. I think the best playing I have ever heard (live) was from Tom Kennedy. I've seen a few of the really top names like Marcus, Melvin Davis, Vic Wooten, Alain Caron, Nathan East, Alphonso Johnson etc but Tom Kennedy is always playing to compliment the music and never seems to play for playing's sake. Saw him twice with Dave Grusin and he blew me away.
9. I appreciate that your financial situation is tending to dictate your actions but the guy had intentionally committed fraud. He needs to be prosecuted. Have you any info regarding his real name or whereabouts?
10.
Interesting topic. Take Sledgehammer, awesome song, huge hit, but if it were released now, would it make it onto radio?
Exactly, my post came about due to our French guitarist saying that "Let it be" could still be a mega hit today as it's quality as a song is undeniable. My point is, probably not if you're hearing it for the first time.
11.
Still have my "Yankee",at least 20 year since I used it but still got it just in case.
What, just in case you want to put a big squiggly twirly scratch across the job when the bit jumps out of the screw head and you're still pushing😂
12. Following a recent conversation regarding the Beatles, I've been trying to think of songs from the 60s 70s and even the 80s that would be successful if written today, and apart from show tunes, can't really come up with anything. If the success of pop songs were purely reliant on being contemporary, it's quite a weird thought that had (for example) the Beatles written and recorded all those songs 15 years later, they may well have sold in hundreds rather than millions.
13. Telecasters with me. Latest one is my 5th after having sold the previous 4 as they "weren't my thing" 😂
14. Bit of a strange one as we played yesterday (Monday) at 2.00pm but it was for the local physio unit staff and patients so a good cause. Quite heartwarming to see people dance (albeit sitting down) and enjoying themselves when they've obviously had some quite serious problems. Went down well and the band were appreciated so all good.
15.
Bassist, backing vox with occasional lead vox, setup and pack away. I tend to lead how we arrange songs, but that's not official, just how it's developed. In my acoustic trio it's the same but just backing vox and arranging songs is pretty democratic.
Exactly the same for me except I shout a bit more in the arrangement area.
16.
Thanks for all the positive comments people. I guess the bass and drums are very much linked, I know I often listen to the drums on a track before the bass. I'd love to have another go, but this time with a bit of prep - a few stock fills and some stuff to end songs with would have really helped.
If you really enjoyed it, treat yourself to a couple of lessons. It may help you decide if you want to get into it more and also get you into a practice regime without any bad habits. Not that you have any, but a couple of professional lessons can be worth a lot.
17. Buy a Status. Only need to tune them every 22 years.
18. Well done. You're proper rhythm section now (meaning you do both) 😀
19. When we rehearse, the vocals are coming through one 1x15 active monitor and the drummer is using those sticky brushy things that didn't exist when I were a lad. Old small Laney combo for me and guitarist has my old 50watt Yamaha combo. Any of us can stop a number at talking volume to comment on some issue. Thus, no ears bleeding, no ears ringing and we can gig at remarkably low volumes if need be.
20. Over here, an "acoustic band" usually means you'll get €100 less than a "band"
21. There's apparently something called the "Sillybugger". Which I'm good at.
22.
my head hurts too much to wade through all of this but it's perhaps worth having a look at this and seeing if you can register to get paid as and when they get out of receivership http://uk.practicallaw.com/1-501-6905?service=crossborder#a946618
Thanks, I'll have a read.
23.
I know that place. Late 70's, I used to dep there quite a lot during the week. Backing visiting 'Crooners' and 'Barbra Streisand' wannabes. "Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner" and "The Lambeth Walk" were certainly the end of the evening knees ups. Sorry about the money loss. Always a tricky one to deal with.
Our fee would have been £15 and, we'd hired the van😂
24.
I have no idea how it works in France but is it worth asking for details of their administrator and registering a claim as a creditor? Or take your van and help yourself to whatever isn't nailed down..
I made sure that our invoice was on their system as there was someone official there this morning. Re your second suggestion, they would have lost the MacBook on the unattended reception desk as I was leaving had I not noticed the CCTV screen when I was in the office shouting at the financial director😀
25. The owners are British. Obviously bound by French regulations but yes, I imagine they'll put it all behind them, shaft all the creditors and eventually continue trading with a fresh load of mug suppliers. (Like us) I have warned everyone I know in France though.
