1. ...............I guess I should consider myself lucky that I've only been knocked for the money twice. First time was the first gig (The Mildmay Tavern in North London, due to us refusing to play "Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner" which was apparently the traditional last orders number for the venue. Partly as we thought it extremely uncool for a progressive heavy rock trio to play it and partly because we had no idea how to Second time was this morning when I went to the remarkably impressive Chateau de la Cazine, where after 10 weeks of e-mails and phone calls trying to get our wedding gig payment, I was told that they were in receivership since 28th November. Considering they had our invoice first week of October, it's obvious that they'd held back payment until their tribunal hearing. I even spoke to their accounts director on Saturday and she said nothing. The thing that annoys me most is that the end client (bride & groom) had been so happy with our performance, they'd paid an extra 20% tip for us on top of our fee when they paid the venue which we had been told to add on to our invoice to the venue Total [sup]W*****S[/sup]
Here's me and two of my band members with the Robster after we supported him last christmas* *may not be the real Robbie, terms and conditions apply, your house may be at risk etc.
Living the dream Pete, living the dream LOL
3.
I'm not a huge fan of Mr Williams, but in his defence he won a shed load of Brit awards and has had a very successful career, with a chart record, both singles and albums, that's not been matched by many. Not every celebrated 'musician' (and I use the year loosely) can come from the 60s and 70s, things have to move on. No matter how much we may disapprove.
I agree about the 60s and 70s bit however, I was kind of referring to the fairly well documented fact that he wrote no music and possibly provided a few lyrics though in fairness, the term "icon" doesn't dictate that you have to create, simply be, an icon.
4. The Blue boy was Gainsborough, this is Yeames. (royalist child being questioned by the Parliamentarians about his father)
5. He may have had actual complaints about noise although I'd guess he'd be keen to mention that as it lets him off the hook. Makes you wonder though exactly when you would've been informed had you not mailed him so could be that he was taking his time in figuring how to do that without offending.
6. "And when did you last see ANYONE playing Cantaloupe Island on a BC Rich?"
7. Apparently, only the third artist to get this award. The other two were Elton John and David Bowie. Bit of a difference in output there as the other two have/had, careers spanning 40 plus years. Surprised it wasn't someone like McCartney, Peter Gabriel or Kate Bush etc.
8.
The vocals in the chorus of Beyonce's Crazy In Love. Some would call it "feel", I call it off the beat.
Great, thought it was only me. Rest of the band said I was imagining it.
9.
I'll think you'll find he's pulling your leg mate, Dood has many basses with many many strings!
And he might be from Norfolk so could have more fingers than the rest of us to play them with.
10. These look very similar to the EA2000 millennium model. Beautiful guitar. Good luck with your sale. These older high end Washburns are really great guitars.
11. Apart from a couple of Lee Ritnour gigs, I saw him backing Larry Carlton and Steve Lukather. Absolute monster of a class bassist. Held my attention for the whole gig despite having two of the world's best guitarists out front.
12. None of us get to choose though do we? We take every gig at £xxx and always hope it'll be busy. If it is, it's a bonus for me. If it isn't, I certainly don't get down about it. It's a paid rehearsal, and a meal out, with friends. I can enjoy a €600 gig thats empty just as much as a free-bee with 500 people. For me, it's more playing the best I can, with people I really like.
13. It's what else happens in a song. Armed with Em, C, G and D and an acoustic guitar (albeit not exactly) you can entertain friends and family with songs by Jessie J, Alex Hepburn, The Cranberries, Pink, Jason Mraz, Black eyed peas, George Ezra and a few hundred others. All these songs are different due to the melody, tempo, production, voice, what instruments are used, how they're used and by whom. The main thing is, depending on your point of view, they're all good and successful numbers.
14. Bit far for most you but Friday night will be at Nouhant (Dept 23) for a commune organised entente cordiale function and Saturday night is at St Sylvain le Roc for a Lions club function. (Same dept)
15. Any good for metal? And probably a good investment as of this morning, stainless scrap is £650 per ton.
16. Thursday night gig for us, a bit strange midweek but it was a last minute thing. Really tiny French pub / restaurant with the drummer taking up 80% of the space Nice vibe in the place. Not exactly overcrowded but very appreciative and up for it. Good pay and fabulous food. I personally love the gigs where we're forced to play quietly. It's a great exercise in discipline. We played well so all in all, a good'un.
17. I went about 15 pages into the list of stuff they do and found quite a rare gem... Custom Shop Jeff Beck Relic Teal Vintage Old Aged Jazz Bass
18.
Not a very close tribute band then.... try the originals
To be honest, I said sort of tribute band as the guitarist (who was also vocalist) was a kind of AC/DC stalker. He kept writing, and sending (to AC/DC) songs about all the members. Actually had a link on their website at one point. Although I did audition for it and would've liked to have got it, it was all a bit weird in a restraining order kind of way. They did send him a signed album but after that, I think he thought they were actually mates and wouldn't leave them alone.
19. I auditioned for a sort of AC/DC tribute a while back. Some original stuff in there too but all in the style. Played well but didn't get it due to them looking for someone with a "little more energy and presence" which I translated as "too old" Fair enough, I've no problem with that. It was their band, not mine. I would've looked like their granddad on stage anyway. Unless you're told that you're not good enough, no point in dwelling on anything like that.
20. Sounds like a good deal. Probably loud enough for 90% of what I do. As stated, bigger gigs, D.I out. Nice and light and compact and probably sounds great.
21. Further down the Ebay page it does say that "People also viewed this" etc and there's a long list of other ads for the same bass at £300 cheaper so I can't see that they'd sell many.
22. It's quite difficult to recollect what actually happened after the event but I think that if the drummer loses the plot for a second, I think I latch on to what he's doing with the snare ASAP as that's the most prominent sound for the audience.
23. The drummer and myself are always having a bit of a laugh on stage. It's a good relationship and he's a good enough player for me to know that if he messes up, it's not a regular thing so, we have a giggle. The audience will hardly notice if at all, he'll then try and throw in something I'm not expecting and then I'll grab hold of his crash as he hits it. A lot of the time (as long as your playing is generally good and on the mark) the band enjoying themselves on stage is as important to the performance as the quality of the music. All about being flexible.
24. I know all the set plus any of the other 40 numbers that could get thrown in depending on the crowd. I don't have a music stand and don't have sheets anywhere other than the actual set list for the order which seems to change for each gig. However, I have been known to let a 4 bar intro go round 3 times whilst I try to remember the first vocal line of something I'm singing so, I have the ability to go from consummate professional to red-faced incompetent pillock in about 60 seconds
