A Hofner sounding better than a Wal? Now that is rare.
Not if you think Wals sound horrible.

Who pays for rehearsal room if 1 person drops out?
leschirons replied to solo4652's topic in General Discussion
The important thing is that your guitarist offered to pay for the room. That says a lot about a person so in this situation, either rehearse without him or don't rehearse but all pay as normal. -
Just picked up a bass I'd bought from Graham about a month ago. All I can say is that Graham is a real credit to Basschat. A true gentleman who bent over backwards to make the transaction a smooth one and one of that rare breed who does exactly what he says he's going to do. Buy from or sell to, with the utmost confidence. A really nice and helpful guy. He seriously looks after his stuff too.

I like it.
The inevitable BC question... what does it weigh?
I seem to remember a US Ebay advert stating 13lbs. Far too heavy for a whole gig but maybe okay for just a few numbers..

It's why I've never wanted a Wal. I don't doubt it's quality, but to some, a thing of beauty. To me, a failed schoolboy woodwork project.
This thread also reminds me of the other advert fave... "Unwanted gift" Who gets £400, £500, £600 basses as birthday presents? And who is it doing the giving and, more importantly why are none of them my auntie? I'm lucky if I get a pair of socks and a CD!
Surely, anyone who gets a 500 quid bass as a present and then sells it because they don't "want" it, is just an ungrateful bastard

Anyone know anything about, or come across one of these (or something similar and as cheap) and if they're available this side of the pond. The brand is Maestro and far eastern. Not sure I'd be able to wear one for a whole gig but I certainly have a use for one for maybe half a dozen numbers. They do a 4 string version too. I love the idea of the 5er and normally use a 5 or 6 string but I could get by with a 4 so if anyone has any info, I'd be grateful.
Did a blues festival in Scotland a couple of years ago playing three gigs in three different venues (all within 500 yards or so of each other) back to back ie starting around 5 o'clock in the afternoon thru to 1 o'clock in the morning. It worked ok - the only problem was finding time to get something to eat...
After we did the second one, (the Brit wedding) they kindly provided us with bacon rolls and brown sauce. Absolutely perfect at 2.00am when you're starving. The two Frenchies couldn't quite get their heads around the Daddies sauce though but I think they'll be back for more

Okay, I've woken (and got) up. Got in at 4.30 a.m. Highs and lows. Pros, very good money. Cons. 1) Setting up the wedding gig. Gear had to be carried 100 mtrs to the marquee, across a bridged moat! and obviously back again at 3.00 .am. 2) Leaving the roadie at the first gig to pack away whilst we rush off to second gig only to find that his tablet (used to control the WIFI mixer) is password locked and he's turned his phone off so played first 40 mins using one mic and just two un-preamped foldback monitors for vocals until he arrived. 3) Audience already dead on their feet upon our arrival but still gave it their best shot. 4) Sunday written off as still shattered. Going to have a nap on couch now but put me down for the Swarfega thing.

Going to be a long night tonight. Playing at 8.00pm until 11.00pm at a big Dutch camp site and then leave Dobbie, our stage elf (singer's husband) to pack it all up while we then drive to a Brit wedding to start again at midnight for a 2 hour set. The band they'd hired now can't play as their singer is unexpectedly in hospital and we got a panic call 48 hours ago. Can't ruin their special day so they've hired a duo to get it going until midnight then we take over as soon as we arrive. Luckily, we have enough gear to set up both gigs so going to install at the wedding venue at 3.00pm, home, get changed and off to first venue. Can probably write the rest of Sunday off as I'll be in bed I imagine

Played a stonker last night at a great restaurant. Outside as it was very warm. Had them all up going crazy for the last hour and then they wouldn't go home LOL

Weird, I was just about to ask about the active USA 5 string version. I tried one the other day in the UK and it was superb in every way. Great balance, neck and play-ability. Tone-wise (for me) better than a Stingray as there were more tonal options. I imagine, the passives are just as good if a little slightly more limited re tone. I doubt there's much difference in the build quality either. I guess it'll be the "it's not a Jazz and it's not a Precision and certainly not a Stingray" line of thought that will kill off this bass commercially. However, I was impressed by the design and Fender having a go at something that ISN'T a Jazz or Precision.

Extra bang for your buck from more costly basses?
leschirons replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
I'm just about to sell my MM 5 string as it's now too heavy for me. As I'll be without it's replacement for about a month, I'll be using my £80 OLP 5 string for the next 5 gigs. Although it's still a little heavy, and despite needing a little tweak on the amp's pre-amp gain, it plays and sounds no worse than the real one does so if you're not bothered about names and the mid / cheap stuff is reliable, why spend a lot more on something that has been lovingly hand built? I have a Fender Custom Shop Jazz bass that plays the same as my mate's Fender vintage modified. I don't think I could even hear a difference in sound either so no, my bass is not 10 times better than his. Of course it's nice to have a thing of beauty that others drool over and no doubt some expensive basses really do play and sound fabulous but as said before, it's all subjective as are all personal evaluations of what represents good value for money. Folks are now paying £2000 plus for mid seventies 3 bolt Jazz basses that were once considered overweight cricket bats but that's their choice and it's their money. If you love it and have the dosh, go for it. -

Sorry to hear you got hurt. I've never fallen off stage but my bass drum and two toms did in 1970, hit a girl on the head who was sitting on the floor in front of the stage and she got carried out on a stretcher by St. John's ambulance.

What is it with singers and sore throats?
leschirons replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
The singer of our band had a sore throat once every 4 to 6 weeks which was annoying, but what really annoyed me was that she couldn't sing any of the set list without the lyrics in front of her!!!
I had no idea that a throat infection could affect memory. Well, you learn something new every day. -
Why are music stands not acceptable in guitar bands?
leschirons replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
Loads of musos use stands here in France and there appears to be no stigma attached to it. However, not for me. I'd rather be interacting with the band or audience. On the odd occasion where I do need notes, it's on a sheet on the floor in BIG writing next to the set list. I have now managed to convince all the band that we look better without them. -
For gigs, Cabs Roqsolid covers Shuttle 6 in GB Shuttle bag All leads in a cloth lead roll All other stuff in a plastic stacking box Mic stand usually left by gate outside my house For rehearsals. Nowt as I leave a complete setup in drummers studio inc a bass.

Didn't everyone used to moan about these re quality control and weight a few years back as being the worst that Fender ever produced? I assume it's only the age then that gives it a value like that.
Ooh, Hamer Steve Stevens, lovely guitar. Was yours a mk 1 or 2 model? What colour was it? (they came in some great finishes!).
Sorry, just seen your question. It was a MK1 in the white pearlescent finish, stock Dimarzios HSS. Never went out of tune, even after serious dive-bombing. Harmonics to die for, and probably the biggest mistake ever in selling it.

Highs and lows. Played well and crowd went crazy But, I'd just flown back 3 hours earlier from the the UK and my Mother-in-law's unexpected funeral and wasn't exactly in the best frame of mind to be playing.
