1.
Sorry
2. I don't have a choice. Thanks for reminding me you ba****d
3. Questions to the band assuming I know how many gigs they want to do. Do I have to pick up the drummer / vocalist / guitarist / keyboard player who doesn't drive? Is it a democracy re band decisions and payment? ( I don't have any problems with a band MD if what they say is valid) Do any of you think that the first note or chord of any song is always the key of that song? Question I'll ask myself. Will I get on with, and enjoy playing with these people?
4.
It's a regular thing for me to put on the radio and try to play along with whatever comes on. I figure that to be a useful skill and good ear training even if I never hear those songs again.
That sounds like a challenging, yet really worthwhile fun idea. I'll have a go at that. Cheers.
5. I originally wrote the word "waste" but of course, any time spent on your instrument is worthwhile. I ask because I picked up a bass this morning ( I keep one and a practice amp in the lounge) and started playing along to stuff on You tube. Ya mo be there. M.MacD Together again, Dave Koz Easy lover, Collins & Bailey Paradise, Smooth operator, Sade' Just the two of us, Bill Withers / Grover Washington Room 335, Larry Carlton Midnight at the Oasis (BNH version) I play none of these numbers in any bands but I have a tendency to play along with all this MOR smooth stuff rather than actually practice the stuff I do play live (Rock, soul, disco etc) Looking at that list, I obviously need to be in a covers band called the "elevators"
6.
So the majority of us took up bass because it was the only instrument left in our first bands? ... doesn't say much about our instruments appeal does it
But finding that you want to stick with it and get good does
7. In my teens, I started out as a drummer. As a kid I'd been in the school orchestra on violin. I then picked up guitar in my late 20's and in my 30's, the usual thing happened when mates decided to form a band and no-one else wanted to play bass so I thought I'd have a go. Still play gigs on the other instruments but generally call myself a bass player these days as it's my first choice.
8. Just be grateful you didn't start a Miles Davis, genius, or self indulgent tosser? thread. You'd have crosses painted in blood on your front door by now Mark King is A-okay. Probably responsible for thousands of people taking up the bass.
9. He's actually missing out a lot on what his sound could be. Mids (especially the higher mids) assuming he's playing a few solos, will improve all the harmonics, especially if he's using single coils. From what you describe, it sounds like he'd have a better sound with everything flat
10. Highly recommend one of these. OLP baritone. 2 H/B, great rock sound. Great neck, mean looks and cheap. About £150 should get one. Brilliant for detuning.
11. The term "Jam session" these days unfortunately seems to equate to a guitarist wanting to widdle away for 20 minutes whilst the bass player plays A, D & E and the drummer (when he finally gets too bored to carry on) attempts to try out all those little fills he's been working on.
12.
What a pity. Great songs, I love his stuff. But have some consolation.
Always a pleasure to hear Laura Nyro. Thank you. Funnily enough, the wife was listening to her version of "Up on the roof" yesterday. She covered some great songs despite being one of the best writers around. Saw her live in the 70's Re the B.B. thing, I'll also console myself by burning a greatest hits CD for the car and playing it to death.
13. Been looking forward to this prog as I think he's one of the best songwriters around. However, the choice of vocalists covering his work live (full orchestra of course) is really dire. Rebecca Fergusson seems to covering the Dionne Warwick hits badly. Her voice is way too harsh and cold for that, and "What the world needs now" sung by Justin Hayward?? It was like a bad Anthony Newley impersonation. Still, great songs though.
14. Saw them here a few years back. Gillan in bare feet and struggling with the high stuff. As already stated, Steve Morse delivering the goods but then I've always loved him anyway. Ian Paice was on form I must say though.
15. Hi, nice bass, but you may want to think about adding a few more pictures, year of manufacture, where you're based and if you're prepared to post etc. It will help generate a little more interest. Good luck with your sale.
16.
Now there's an idea for another topic. What's the best band you saw but cannot remember? I think I saw Hawkwind and Joe Walsh (not together), but don't remember much. And no unusual substances involved, just don't remember. No reflection on either, I'm sure they were excellent.
I don't think you're alone, I'd guess that most of Hawkwind aren't even sure if they were ever actually in Hawkwind
17. A friend here bought a Jazz bass via Ali Express. He only told me a couple of months ago and he's had it 2 years now. I thought it was genuine to be honest. Damn good copy, and on the one occasion I used it, apart from the different feel of the neck and action, it didn't really sound any worse than my custom shop with all the bells and whistles. Stayed in tune too. He had no real issues with the delivery either although it wasn't a five minute thing and a couple of e-mails had to be sent.
18.
Ah yes, another thng about old SBs... it can be a challenge to find one with both coils of the original MB pickups in working condition, you'll find lots of replacements like that one or ones where it all goes silent when switched to series
Yes, I guess it all depends what is most important to the buyer, The feel and playability or retaining the original sound. Mind you, there are a couple more around the 900€ mark so still cheaper.
19. Ha, just realised it's got a Noll pre in it and a Crell P/up. Maybe not what you're looking for as he doesn't have the original parts. Sorry.
20. Here's one for sale over here. Under half the price. I don't know much about these so I'm assuming it is what he says. You'd know more than me. Have attached his pics and if you want me to find out if it's still available, let me know. Insured postage to UK would probably be about 45€ Forgot the link so here it is. https://www.zikinf.c...annonce=1133737 Works out at about £390 at today's rate.
21. I suppose because of my advancing years, I was lucky enough to have seen a few of those listed above like SRV, Laura Nyro, The Who, Queen, Free with Paul Kossoff, Rory Gallagher etc although I seem to have been lacking in the major rock acts department like early Purple, Led Zep, Hendrix, Ronson etc. Strange, as that was when I seriously into rock music. Even the early Who Queen gigs were small affairs so maybe I simply didn't like huge venues. Some interesting names coming up though.
22. Just been listening to Michael Hedges. Really regret not seeing him in concert.
23. Acoustic duo gig last night. (Me guitar + female vox) Didn't know if I was looking forward to it really due to the current mood here. They were thinking of cancelling but decided to go ahead in the end in line with the typical and admirable French attitude of "You can't keep us down" Wasn't packed, but we had a minutes silence, then started with Imagine (Eva Cassidy version) That went down well and then we did our normal sets but with an added 10 French numbers dotted around. A very good night in the end as quite a few turned up later in the evening.
24. It's just one of those really rare ultra feelgood numbers that everyone wants to hear. Love it or not, it's quite infectious, like "Happy" was.
