1. Just out of curiosity, if there was an actual thing called a schmender, what would be the second word? would it still be schmender "schmender"? I guess this question applies to any noun that starts with schm....
 2.
Being able to check harmonies is invaluable, but don't allow it to distract from actually listening to the bass line.
It doesn't distract me from the bass line at all. I just like the idea of being able to play all of our numbers on any instrument in the band (including the drums) It keeps them all on their toes and puts a stop to bullshit excuses
 3.
Now I have sideboard GAS!
So have I. So much so that I've just purchased www.sideboardchat.co.uk and am looking for a partner / collaborator. It's the future. Are you in?
 4. If I need to learn a song, the first thing I do is write down all the chords for intro, verse, bridge, mid 8, etc then sort out the bass line. I find being able to play the song on guitar or keyboards gives me a clue as to why the bass is doing what it does and what it should be doing if I can't hear it properly (actually, more like what I can get away with) Also, being able to play all the chords usually means I can correct our guitarist who's only listened to it in the car on the way to rehearsal
 5. Most I've been in has been four, plus helping out another two whilst they each sought a full time bassist. Luckily, both bands did find a replacement with about 4 months so it wasn't too long. No problem juggling the balls as none of the four main bands were playing more than once a week as a rule (sometimes twice, sometimes not at all) but what made it a lot easier was a fairly regular gig on a Thursday and another on a Sunday. I found it immense fun but wouldn't fancy it these days. Too old.
 6. Have to say it's the opposite for me. I love everyone in the band but hate 70% of the set list.
 7.
Do they know gigging is fun? Blue
For you and me, yes it is, but maybe not for others.
 8.
So it seems. When you play for yourself and to yourself, you can basically do what you want, you don't have to consider anyone..their style or sound or opnions ..anything. You aren't putting it through anyone's elses reference... you don't even need to consider if it is any good...i,e others like it and will put a value on it. You may not have discipline as you may not need it. You really have to have confidence in yourself to be in control of everything with no other sounding board...but then if you are just doing it for giggles ...then no one ever hear it..so you don't need to care. For me... that is a complete waste of time... but there you go. Music is all about what you can give to other people, IMO. so to take that part out of it..?? hmmm ..??
If I had never in my life, heard a live band that sounded like no-one in it cared what the hell it sounded like, I may have agreed with you but there are plenty out there who appear not to employ the "discipline" you speak of. One only need spend 5 minutes on You tube to see that there are a thousand bands out there who should be punished for crimes against humanity. To say that anyone making music in their bedroom for giggles (by which I assume you mean for their own pleasure) doesn't need to give any consideration as to whether it is good is a little shuttered. Good by who's judgement? Your definition of good? I'd guess that playing or composing music without the confines of whether others would deem it good has been a contributing factor in the evolutionary process of music and the production of some highly original and groundbreaking compositions. You're suggesting that only others can judge your music to be good or bad if indeed, "good and bad" exist. Leaving any financial issue aside, it would appear that many live musicians have an inherent need to be adored and ultimately accepted by their peers. Maybe, those who play for their own pleasure, do not.
 9.
wrong discipline
Well that's now two of us that don't know what you mean by "discipline" then.
 10.
Is working from home a good comparison to playing bass guitar at home. Blue
My point was, that irrespective of what the "work" is, you don't only have to be playing live in order to put the work in. You seem to have this weird view that there is only one possible goal when being able to play an instrument, and that goal, must be to play live. You don't appear to understand that others may not have the same outlook as yourself. I think it's all about what goes on in people's lives (I'm not suggesting that this really is the case but) in your life for example, your band may be the only thing you have going on at this point. You may not be in a relationship, you don't have another job, ergo, your main focus will be on your band life and gigging. For some people on this website, gigging will be the last thing on Earth that they'd ever want to do. It's obvious that you're really passionate about what you do and that's brilliant but we're all different and we all take from music (and playing) just what we need to fill either a large, or very small gap in our lives. Peace.
 11.
ok but EU500 are about £360. am i right iN presuming that you will ship this to the UK for £360?
You have to put a "trade" price on here so that may not actually reflect what the seller wants for an actual sale. He's stated that he wants 500€ shipped so that's what you'd need to pay him. If that happens to be in your favour at present exchange rate-wise then that's your good fortune. Pay him in Euros. Hope that helps.
 12.
I mean if you play for yourself at home to only please yourself...it doesn't matter what your discipline is like... but when you play with other people or to other people you have to adhere to other people's parameters.
Surely anyone who works from home has to be disciplined otherwise they'd all lay in bed all day and get nothing done. I can't see that self discipline has anything to do with other people. You may have to conform or be flexible in some way but that's not the same.
 13.
I don't think it's all that complicated or that one is better than the other. I'm saying a lot more work goes into gigging than playing at home alone. And then, it only my opinion. Blue
Really? You turn up at a gig, someone else has probably put the set list together. You rely on a drummer to provide the drumming, guitarists and vocalists to provide the guitaring and vocals etc etc etc yet if someone wants to do that at home, they are programming drum tracks, singing, playing or programming the bass, playing guitar or (and) keys and possibly even composing the track in the first place. Even if they purely play one instrument for pleasure, they may be putting in 8 hours a day to learn their craft. Pity Mike Oldfield or Emmit Rhodes aren't here to explain how much work they put into their "easy way out" home recorded projects. I agree with an earlier poster that maybe you need to change your name to Black & white
 14. 6 basses, 4 electric geetars 4 acoustics and 2 banjos. Why not?
 15.
All I'm saying is playing in the bedroom is still taking the easy way out. Just because a guy doesn't care about the inconveniences of gigging doesn't change that. Do your saying the skill set it takes to be a live gigging musician is the same as the bedroom player? Blue
The easy way out of what? Music is a hobby to most people. The big difference here is that it's your one and only job so, you work to deliver the best you can so you don't lose that job. Regarding your "skill set" remark, it takes a different skill set to be a brain surgeon as opposed to a nurse but maybe all the nurses didn't actually want to be brain surgeons and get more job satisfaction doing what they do. You appear to be under the impression that if others aren't as enthusiastic as you are about playing and gigging, then they're not taking the whole thing as seriously as you think they should. I remember from a previous post that you used to work behind a desk in some sort of financial institution or something. A job you hated and couldn't cope with by your own admission so, you picked up a bass and now play in a band. Maybe in your old office they think you took the easy way out
 16.
Thing about playing at home, your always playing under damn near perfect conditions. Playing to a perfect tempo, playing along to recordings made by the best in the business, playing in a sitting position. None of that happens at live gigs. There's a completely different learning curve you have to master to play live. Stuff that doesn't happen in the bedroom. Blue
But people who only want to play in the bedroom, don't give a sh*t about standing or having to play with a live drummer, that's the point Blue, not everyone wants to do what you do and probably 75% of them don't need the money. Folks just do what suits them.
 17.
I found that too at Ronnie Scott's last week at the Bebel Gilberto show - I looked round the room and I was the ONLY person grooving along in my seat. Eventually I stood up and grooved along at the bar with apparently the only other person in there with a pulse
Yup, 6 months ago, a friend of our son told me he was going to Ronnie Scott's for dinner with some friends. "Who's on?" I enquired. "Dunno, some bloke or a band maybe. Me mate got the tickets" Whoever was playing must have been overjoyed with that bunch in the audience.
 18. I enjoy gigging, and I play quite a few but certainly don't regard anyone who plays, but doesn't want to gig as weird. Maybe they just enjoy the challenge of the instrument or simply want to play for their own amusement. It doesn't make them any less of a guitarist / bassist or violinist than anyone else, only a musician who'll be inexperienced in playing with others.
 19. Being a huge Steve Morse fan, I simply love Dave La Rue's tone on all of the Steve Morse band albums. I've not managed to get anywhere near it in 10 years though.
 20. I'll have a look on UK EBay anyway, see what's about. Trouble is, like last time I went to Ronnie Scott's (Lee Ritnour, Dave Grusin, Tom Kennedy and Sonny Emory) half the bloody audience have no real interest in the music but just think its the place to go to impress their girlfriend or pals and spend half the night yakking.
 21.
I wonder if he does lessons.
Yes he does, I believe he's a tennis coach.
 22.
But whatever Robert Plants, Roger Waters!
Ah, but was Rick Wright?
 23. Never use the bridge. I only ever use neck or neck/middle positions.
 24. Electro harmonix Holy grail? Seem to be the one that loads of guitarists swear by.
 25. I suppose that had the mids been set at -8, you could safely assume that Mark King had been the previous driver
