Depends really, a 5 or 6 string obviously retains your string intervals, a 4 string in drop D moves your E string out of your traditional fingerboard patterns. Some people will find a 5 string more comfortable, some people will find a 4 in D more comfortable. Depends how good you are with fingerboard knowledge Si
I don't think I'll have a problem with new fingerboard patterns. We seem, to do quite a few numbers in D (due to the vocals) and when I've only had a 4 string at my disposal, I've dropped the E to D purely because the numbers sound a bit empty and lifeless played on and around the 5th fret. (Although that could be a jazz bass quirk too) The downside being de-tuning and re-tuning mid set. I'm just thinking that for the songs that we have in the set that I need (or prefer) a low D, this may be the answer. I've just looked through our set list for this Friday and there are 17 numbers that I use a low D on so, may be the way to go as it's less grief than buying another bass (especially here in France)

I normally use a 5 or 6 string these days but, I seriously miss using my lightweight 4 string Jazz bass over the course of an evening as the others are starting to feel a little heavy in my advanced years. I've realised, 99% of the time it's for the low D and just the odd occasion where I get bored down the head stock end so move up the board. I saw a covers band at a wedding a few weeks ago and the bassist was using a 4 string (an attitude I think) with a Hipshot drop D tuner. He covered a fair few of the numbers we do and used the drop D a fair few times. I'm not really into changing basses on gigs and wondered if any of you have forsaken the low B string in favour of a D tuner. The alternative I guess would be buying a lightweight 5 string but thought I'd investigate your opinions first. Thanks.

A Harmonic Algorithm (Research Project - looking for input)
leschirons replied to Oscar South's topic in General Discussion
Well, with the 1st reply being an apology, the 2nd and 3rd starting with "Can you explain?...... and "Do you mean?....... and me sitting here thinking "Eh?" It ain't looking good -
The subject is of great interest to me but not sure whether it would warrant it's own sub-section. If I need to know something, I tend to just ask in general discussion and lo and behold, tons of useful info comes back.

Does someone need to be "qualified" to criticise?
leschirons replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
The guitarist mentioned in my original post had overheard, or heard about a comment regarding his playing so really, this has nothing to do with any criticism being offered to him. -
You either think something's good or bad, or somebody is good or bad. It's not rocket surgery.
No, but it could be brain science -
I seem to recall Buckler saying that "There were three people in The Jam, and two of them weren't Paul Weller" That probably sums up Paul Weller's "up his own backside" attitude quite well.
TBH there is no right or wrong in music (playing) its just how other people perceive it.
Really? then don't you know if you've f***ed up? -

Just to add, this is not someone I play with in a regular band, it was a one off. -
Played with a guitarist a while back who had heard someone make a comment about one of his solos which, to be honest, was a bit sad with quite a few bum notes in there (no, it wasn't jazz before any joker asks) I understand that no-one likes criticism however, his argument was that the guy wasn't qualified to make a comment as he was not a musician. My personal view is that if something is not good, it's not good. It's not as if he was playing anything so way out and clever that he could employ the "I think it went over their heads" argument I believe that if someone is into music appreciation, as opposed to actually playing it, they're more than qualified to say what does, or does not, sound good.

Played a duo gig yesterday afternoon in a church. It was some fundraiser but a paid gig for us. Only 80 people, most of which were 65+ so a quick change of the set list was needed to add some older French standards. The real upside of the gig was that my guitar and the singer's vocals had never sounded so good. We had next to no volume coming through the P.A. and zero effects. Didn't need it. Coupled with her singing in French (she's English) it all went down a storm.

So, looks like I'm the only one who has drum sticks, box of assorted plectrums, a hi-hat top clamp, a Vox Satchurator pedal, a spare SM58 and 9-42 guitar strings in the car, apart from all my bass gear. Every one of these items has been forgotten at some point by the others in the band.

So, despite being old and out of touch, can I assume the the shouty out of tune and over enthusiastic pop princess currently making my jaw drop in disbelief, is Florence? Whoever it is, she's sh*t.

Jazz on electric bass... Saint or Sinner?
leschirons replied to Modman's topic in General Discussion
It's okay as long as you use something acceptable to die-hard jazzers. In my experience, something like this would be fine. -
The wife is in an Irish folk band (Irish as in the music, not the musicians) and at last night's gig, the main guy in the band changed between 4 string banjo, 5 string banjo and mandolin 11 times. Did my brain in just to watch. I change once in my group (to a fretless) and I insist on it being the last number in the first set so there's no need to change back again immediately.
I have more basses than I've had gigs in the last 2 years. Sometimes I wonder whether I should flog all but the two 'special' ones!
They were all "special" when you bought them, so keep them all. Sorted.
Me neither... I can't hold a pick properly, it keeps slipping round my hand and I end up with the pointy bit facing away from the strings. Also, after this weeks first rehearsal on guitar it turns out I have a lot to learn about controlling feedback.

I too only recently bought a guitar to lay down guide tracks, bit of noodling, etc... then realised I can't play it. Bugger!
You two are going to ruin it for everybody, you're just looking for every little excuse not to buy guitars

I am thinking of starting a Pink Floyd Tribute Band
leschirons replied to Bilbo's topic in General Discussion
Floyd tribute bands are not really audience magnets are they? None of the ones I've seen were obscured by crowds. -
Ah, see, it's all different in France. "Jamming" here, means "Hey Joe" Always suggested by a guitarist who thinks he's better than he actually is and always ends up with a 15 minute, not very good guitar solo and me deciding to go home with my head in my hands, mumbling "never again"
I looked at a couple of videos, and each seemed to have a different bass player. I wonder if something is going on with bass players in this band... E.g.:
Like Spinal Tap and drummers?
But isn't that simply the clever ploy of a very, very good scammer..? You're all falling for it..! The fellow has spent the last 15 years baiting this elaborate trap, and he's likely to get away with a whole wad of notes (well, maybe £120 or so...); plus a real UK passport number he can launder if he's 'savvy'. A mastermind, I say; teeth like razors and the cunning of a fox. A second Moriarty, and here you all are, falling for it..! Hilarious..!
A second Moriarty? How dare you. There shall be only one. (Although, the second most dangerous man in London was Capt Sebastian Moran I believe)
