1.
Just seen some Clapton tracks listed, so feeling brave (but will still put the tin hat on and hide) - Layla, esp that Allman drivel at the end, it's just an horrendous racket! Right, I'm off......
You're not alone.
2.
Should have gone to spexavers
Ooops yes you're right. I must have been too focused on his choice of carpet
3. So what happens if someone does the buy it now deal and he's already got bids on an auction with no reserve listed? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/status-graphite-bass/251921952639?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D30110%26meid%3D86536d49c0fe483aba785d580ee4d47b%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D251922233112&rt=nc http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Status-Bass-Guitar/251922233112?_trksid=p2047675.c100013.m1986&_trkparms=aid%3D555012%26algo%3DPW.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D30110%26meid%3D823fc4b7631549ebb6c866cba3964235%26pid%3D100013%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D29%26sd%3D161643267506
4. I don't have the ears to be able to tell the difference but maybe that's because I know what tone I like and get it anyway by twiddling knobs.
5. I'll be gear sharing on Saturday night. However, it's with the same band we always share with and it works both ways whenever we're on the same bill. They're probably the only ones we would share with though as they are all friends. Re the gig. Nightmare scenario as mentioned, everyone sods off after their mates' band / daughter's dance troupe / or in our case last time "La science d'accordéons" has been on. Despite all these negative points though, I would be uncontrollably drawn towards wanting to see the singer song writer who's intending to hold people's interest with his "journey of depression over the years" just so I can wait for a dramatic lull in his repetoire, look around and shout out "Anyone fancy a pint?"
6. I just remembered how much I hate "I don't like Mondays"
7. Did Alex " thecheesemaster" James need to be there? Is he skint? Probably not. His bass came over fine sound-wise but the song was a total crap 3 chord bash and multi-millionaire Damon Albran looked like he hadn't washed for a month and couldn't afford a dentist. Now I really do sound like my Dad did.
8.
Just hit it with a heavy book and it'll go away.
What book would be best? A novel or factual?
9. Make sure you have transport and good gear, preferably reliable. As mentioned, learn all the classic covers if it's covers / pub bands you're going after. Get your name about as previously mentioned and don't give anyone a hard time. Alternatively, offer to pick up the lead singer and the P.A. on the way. That way, you don't even have to be any good
10. Bat out of hell and that crappy song from about the 90's that keeps repeating "74 - 75"
11.
That's them. Thanks. Superb from the two or three minutes I heard. I'll definitely look them up.
Here you are. https://www.facebook.com/PrologMusique My old vocalist in Paris appears to know them.
12. I think the band you're looking for were Prolog. They were playing at Rue Point du jour (about 37k into the run)
13. Why not see if you can get one of these. I guess they also make them for the normal Shuttles. https://www.andrewsm...0-%26-12.2.html
14.
Ta for that, Molan. An interesting read, Sir. It rather begs the question of The Perfect Bass - a bass that might perhaps score 10/10 on every scale. A bass so universally perfect that everyone who played it would love it, irrespective of their technical prowess and chosen genre. What skills might be needed to craft such a bass? How much might it cost? And would they do a £250 Chinese clone, please? .
Surely a bass such as you describe could only be made by the Dark Lord Sauron, in the fires of Mount Doom.
15.
The BGM review model is the Amboyna Burl Monarch 4 Elite No - I'd never heard of him either. Turns out it's a type of wood..
Thanks for the info Drax. Well that's a relief now that I know it's Amboyna burl. For a moment there I thought it wasn't going to be worth the money.
16. I'm missing something here. The bass mentioned in the OP is listed in the current Fodera 2015 price list as $5050 . Even with import and VAT, where does this £11,000 come from?
17. All those archeologists that say they're "really excited" about every lump of pottery. I also hate the terms "dissing" and "way to go"
18. Nothing at all. The setlist is all still going round in my head.
19. We're always our own worst critics. Last function band I was in in the UK was like this. They got good work and good money and went down really well so, they all assumed that the band was great. Like you, I'm no Vic Wooten but like to get things right and polished. They would not listen so after 10 years of banging my head against a wall, I moved on. Obviously your band all agree it wasn't great so you have a good opportunity to improve the overall performance as everyone will have the same mindset. I've had murders in the past with a couple of bands with a "that'll do" attitude due to the apparent success of the gig. You're lucky to not be in that situation.
20.
My band is adding to our repertoire again and although I'm slightly peevish - why does it always seem that what I want to play isn't 'quite right' or 'a bit lame' or... well yeah. I'm not that attached, though, so I'm happy to have a go at whatever numbers they want to play, but lately they seem to be picking numbers that are really beyond my playing ability - just too damned fast etc. I'm doing my best, but bass is a late discovery for me. Anyone else had that? Do I suggest they get a better bassist?
In an ideal world, no, just nail the bass parts and shut them all up. However, your post sort of suggests that you feel they are deliberately criticising your bass lines and making life hard for you by choosing difficult numbers. I'd have a word.
21. Out here, the use of Karaoke, D.J.s or singer with backing trax doesn't really happen. The venues I know tend to go for open mic nights or a duo to cut down on the cost of entertainment as they still prefer live entertainment. Generally, we play as much as we want these days albeit that it may be less than some of you would like to gig but it is our choice due to a; My age and other musical commitments b; The guitarists work schedule c; The singer's other musical commitments d; The drummer's other musical commitments We'll never get less than 90€ each for local gigs but sometimes an awful lot more if it's a function. Along with the duo thing I do, a few one-off gigs and a the odd dep, I'll probably play 40 gigs this year which quite frankly is far too many for me these days. The other bands also seem to do well re number of gigs but some do go out cheap. We've been asked if we can match other's cheaper fees but we always refuse although we have no problem doing a freebee for a good cause. So I guess it's quite healthy here. Of course, venues close but it seems that just as many open up, even if it's only for 2 or 3 years. I get the impression that the French will never tire of live music and will always support it.
22. Some good stuff mentioned there. I intend to suggest "You gotta fight for your right to party" to whip up a little excitement. Anyone here already do it?
23.
What do you start with?
Rolling in the deep.
24. Gigged a new line up last night for the first time (new drummer and new guitarist, both French) Myself and the singer had taken the opportunity to weed out some old numbers and make quite a few changes in the play list. To my surprise, the number that went down to tumultuous applause and screaming was "Crazy in love" Usually it's the Adele numbers or the French standards that we throw in. We do the Snow Patrol version so much rockier than the original. I admit I wasn't keen when it was first suggested but it was really fun to play and I couldn't believe the reaction. This will now be our new "end of gig biggie"
