1. If you can find an old Status Energy 4 (I assume you play a 4 string) with the square edges (not the Artiste) mine weighed in at 7lb 2oz and you usually pick them up for under £400 The attached pic is a 5er but just to show the body type.
 2.
Yep, not sure about the painted neck yet. Will get some sweaty gigs under my belt and then decide what to do. Might stick a brillo pad in the shopping next week just in case! And the scratchy issue is now addressed it seems.
Like yours, I have an early one ( 2003) Couldn't get on with the paint on mine so took it back to the wood and sealed it with Danish oil. Quite a nice piece of timber in fact despite them supposedly having cheaper cuts of wood to keep the cost down. It now feels great (to me anyway) I also took the opportunity to whip about .5mm (that's point five) off the back of the neck. It's now the perfect profile for me, sounds and plays great and if it does get stolen or broken, it's not cost me €2,000
 3.
(and we never mention the war of 1815, although it brought 50 years of peace in Europe, it upsets the French).
(and also allowed Sweden to win the Eurovision song contest)
 4.
Some "superstars" do have the time and enjoy mixing with us mere mortals, without being looking for adulation. I've only met one such person, a guitarist, several times... he was a joy to be with, he had experienced so much and was still interested in exploring new gear and he'd share his experiences as he was recording his latest album... This is a guy who has played with several top tier world famous bands. Humble, funny, knowledgeable, helpful... He even gave me some backing tracks for me to play with (essentially his tracks without his lead guitar) when I told him how much I enjoyed playing along to the songs at home. There are some people like that, he wasn't really learning much from me, that's for sure! But "superstars" can also be just... well, human. Some are nicer than others, just like with the rest of us.
I'm sure there are a few who would take the time to get involved. My point wasn't that they're not nice generous people, but that in general, they probably have other stuff to do and that whatever they could offer by way of knowledge, could probably be passed on via an interview rather than being bombarded with posts on a forum. Re the original post, which referred to learning from them, anything other than knowledge is basically just personal experience and is, whilst possibly very interesting, subjective.
 5.
I agree. My guess is that many pros would say something like "get the best bass you can afford and then practice a lot" whereas many posts here are in search of the perfect sound. This is not very scientific, I know, but the fact that the "Bass Guitars" and "Amps and Cabs" forums here have 21,000 topics whereas "Theory and Technique" has 2,000 does indicate that most people come to this site to discuss gear.
+1, and I think it's because the vast majority are able to contribute at some level to a discussion about pickups, a lightweight rig or a sunburst finish as opposed to a discussion about modes and pitch axis theory. Gear subjects can include many more people as all members have some sort of gear but not everyone plays in a band or wants to learn theory or record etc. You don't even have to play to contribute. Re the OP, I'm not sure there's anything to be learnt from pro musicians that couldn't be imparted in an interview. In my mind, there are two types of pro anyway. There's the superstar household name (obviously many are top of their musical game but there are some who don't even know which strings they use or how to tune a bass) and the pro working studio / gigging type. Neither is likely to have time to contribute but if they do, the first short burst of "you're talking crap" will put an end to it. The superstar has better things to do and the working pro session / depping / gigging player sees no advantage in imparting all his hard won knowledge about "how" and "who" to the possible future competition.
 6. This sounds like you play with a couple of guys who just want to be able to say, they're in a band. Leave.
 7.
I usually get people talking to me whilst I'm not only playing, but singing!
+1 I've had (whilst singing and playing) "Excuse me mate, have you got a pen"? The most bizarre question though was "Can we play From Russia with love by Mat Monroe"? Bearing in mind we were called Van Helsing and had just finished the 1st set with a Def Leppard number, it was unlikely
 8. Alternative Rock Factfile (hereinafter known as "The thread") is to be sold off next month by majority share holder and popular beat combo bassist york5stringer. The Dorset based entrepeneur made the decision when it was discovered that he now officially owns more than 51% of all the thread contributions. In a statement issued earlier today, he told us that none of the 60's pop group "The Four Pennies" ever actually knew a girl called Juliet.
 9. Seems okay to me other than it may have been recorded in someone's shed. Don't like drums that up front in the mix either.
 10. Yes, I owned an acoustic "Merica" 4 string bass for about 4 years. Played really lovely, held tuning great and sounded very nice indeed. I appreciate you may not be needing an opinion on an acoustic bass but the build quality was really good. I bought it second-hand from a guy who did the cruise ships and he'd used it for a couple of years professionally so he must have been happy. I certainly was.
 11. I never played over the verses but never got bored as I was singing it. The only time I have made a noise in the verses was when I filled in the bass drum for the drummer as he'd forgotten his pedal (AGAIN)
 12.
'There's no guitar knob'. I beg to differ, I've met loads of 'em.
13. Nice post. Good on you. Did you keep the Marlin? Nice to hang on to the first bass
 14.
I love my current rig, sounds great, but if I was physically able to cart it about,
As above but with... Eden WT500, (bridged mode) Eden 4x10 (line out, into an) Eden 2x12CF 300 combo. I was only playing rock at time but it was also great for some seriousl funk.
 15. So is the venue fully booked for 2015 with JUST jam nights or are they still having bands too? If they're still having bands, it could just be a one off on a Saturday night, then there's nothing to worry about. However, even if they are not prepared to pay bands any more at all, it's their choice. If you decided to have solar panels on your house, you wouldn't expect EDF to turn up and say it's not fair As you said, you had another gig for last night anyway.
 16. I don't see anything wrong with jam nights. No-one would complain if, instead of a band, the owner put on a Bingo night or a darts tournament. The landlords are under no obligation to provide us with paid gigs. He's doing the same as you, trying to earn a living. People go on about it being a closed shop for mates of the house band or the fact that they might have to listen to a load of deluded crap players all night but not giving others a chance to get up there and have a go is also promoting a clic situation.
 17.
Don't worry, you can borrow mine.
Yeah but I think you may have been a Mod in the past and these were a small part of your golden handshake severance deal
 18.
What are you suggesting, you silly knigget! By the way, welcome!!
That some sort of remuneration is secretly paid out to Mods in the form of special emoticons, as if there exists some sort of secret emoticon club. By the way, I'm not the one that's just joined. He's at the top of the page
 19.
Apologise, when I'm the one that's been insulted..! Harrumph..! ... ... Well, all right then, but I'll limit the expressions of contrition and making-up to a simple : (Earl Grey for me, with a twist of lemon, please...) There, that's all settled. Une entente cordiale.
Do all Moderators (notice the respectful capital "M") have a secret supply of emoticons unavailable to the run-of-the-mill canon fodder like me?
 20. I spent £3000 on an Fbass and gigged it about 4 times. Absolutely fabulous instrument but was too worried about getting it knocked over and whatever. Sold it. Complete waste of time buying it.
 21.
Well Kev, i was sure you wasn't called Clement. leschirons and Dad: i don't want my introduction thread to be the scene of such a quarrel. Please have a (french) kiss. Or i call a moderator.
Don't worry Clément, I have ordered him to apologise to you
 22. Now listen here, you've totally hijacked this thread with your Norman Pythonesque ramblings so, “You are no longer the knights who say Ni! You are now the knights who say ekki-ekki-ekki-pitang-zoom-boing!” You now need to apologise to Clément as you're the one who's the moderator and who's also old enough to know better
 23. But in France they will always lay on a meal for the band as it has always been that way. So, the band accepts that it's always part of the evening / gig. Personally, I find it makes the whole experience that much nicer and laid back. Anyone who performs live in France is usually afforded the utmost respect. I don't need that in order to do my job but I think it's a lovely sentiment.
