Not to be confused with Acoustic Silence, which was what we used to hear when my band finished a song.
Hair colour ranked ahead of musical ability?
No, you've misread it... it's nearly 2 feet.
Like the role of Tarzan. -
Well personally, I think this has been a really worthwhile thread as I'm going to nick "Acoustic Science" as the new name for our acoustic duo

Best contact the mod for the market place section then.

Bar Gigging, Why Do We Love It? / Why do We Hate It?
leschirons replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
Re bands boycotting poor venues that don't pay, it's never going to happen and the reason for that is in 50% of the previous posts. Lots of people like to play for fun. It's just a hobby for some people and why shouldn't it be? The question is, how good are the bands that do play for nothing? It's possible of course, but unlikely that they'll be exceptionally good and after the landlord has only served drinks to 15 people each night for a couple of months, he'll go back to paid bands that will fill a venue. I have a couple of mates in an Essex covers band that never fail to fill every venue to danger point. Of course they don't play for nothing, they know their worth but so do the landlords. -
What bass his he playing.? this will suprise you.
I'm not a keyboard player; I'm a guitarist, so I put a lot of thought into making a bass track, which usually comes about as part of the writing process with Bluey. Occasionally they'll be handed over to a bass player to record which is what happened on the Positivity album; mostly my bass lines but played by Randy. Besides, I like to think that what I do is beneficial to the craft of bass playing and my work has certainly benefited some bass players! Bluey told me that they used 'Colibri' at Berkley as part of their bass curriculum, thinking that it was a live bass track! In fact, most people assume that it was recorded by Randy, which is one hell of a compliment. Who played what on 'Tribes, Vibes & Scribes' can be found here. Richard Bull
My bass teacher told me he'd like me to try and nail this great line he'd just heard by Randy Hope-Taylor when Tribes was released. I wonder if he knows after all these years ( I never got it to sound right if you're wondering) Many thanks for the information, and hats off to you. You had me fooled (and 50,000 others I suspect) -
Well, looking at the replies so far (I wasn't familiar with two suggestions but have just listened to them) we're all sitting on the same bus at the moment. Every one of the choices makes you need to tap feet / hands / bob your head and just generally move and get into it. I had expected to come across a few that might make me ask "where's the groove in this?" as some folks may view things differently but, not yet so maybe groove is a universal thing that we all agree on after all.
-
Groove. Now there's a word that gets used a lot by bass players and drummers. So, what is the one song that really sums it up for you? I'm interested to find out if groove actually means different things to different people or whether we all agree on what it is but simply feel it in different music. For me, the song is not even one I particularly think is great but this is about "the groove" so, with a simple (but very well played) bass line, a little percussion, 3 chords on the keyboards and a few other bits 'n' pieces, it's Paradise by Sade' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KuKmjikoQc

Did an acoustic gig last night in a pizza restaurant. They'd decked the whole place out with cobwebs and the like and advertised it as a Halloween party. Quite a crowd in there with about 50% of them dressed up. It was good fun.

ok, where have I seen that headstock design before?
Hockey stick?
That's why it looks like a Kramer. The original Barettas had the hockey stick head-stock (with the crap luthier's joint that always became detached) -
Try using "Davis" then....!?
DAVIS! NO! Yes, that works, thanks
Refreshing version; I hope your drummer's up to it, as there's a lot going on there in that department. Very tasty; would you like to post your version of it, if it goes through..? Thanks for sharing.
Ha ha, yes I listened quite intently to the drums on this. Our boy has the energy and enthusiasm for sure, just a matter of the ability. If it does happen, and we record the event at rehearsals, I'll post. All depends how far out of their comfort zone this is -
You get to choose who you work with? Lucky old you.
Yup, except on deps but even then, I don't do this for the money primarily so can still say no if I know there's someone in a band that I don't like.
Always nice to hear a slightly different treatment of a familiar song, and this is good! Thanks Keith. I can just hear Steve H doing this - can you?
Ohhhhhh yes, I can. He'll probably rush out and buy a 7 string something though -
I'd buy the same thing again. (Shuttle 6.0 combo and the ext cab)

Yes I probably am, but at least I draw the line at referring to Miles Davis as "Miles"

....in about every band I've ever been in (we thought we were so "ROCK" with the Frijid Pink version) Just came across this little gem by Five Finger Death Punch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7siqTsfoqA Despite my advancing years, I quite fancy having a go for the fun of it. This song is up there with the other unofficial French national anthems as it was covered by Johnny Hallyday and has been requested at about every gig I've ever played since moving here. Not sure about how this will go down with the local farming community but hopefully, the band may be up for it.
-
Not really sure that I understand what the OP is looking for. In any of the bands I've been in or currently play in, we are all band "mates" meaning, we play together. Some are just "mates" and some are also friends but surely this applies to every situation in life be it work, bands, being in a Sunday football team, having neighbours etc. I wouldn't be in a band or spend time with anyone I hated anyway, in any situation, so all people I know are either acquaintances, or friends. At times we fall out, whether they be friends, or "mates" If I find the other members of the band are easy to play with and communicate with, the music works and the band works. Makes no difference whether we only ever meet at gigs and rehearsals or spend a lot of time socializing together.
oh, I know, I can't help hating them bitterly too... In my mind I see the little guy as an embryo, dividing fast... meanwhile, I am playing bass somewhere... then the embryo forms into a foetus, you see the little limbs now, the fingers are clearly seen, tiny little buds... and meanwhile I'm playing about the same thing I did earlier on my bass... then he is born... and he learns to walk, to talk, to pee in the toilet, to use cutlery, to read, while I'm still having difficulty with the same songs I did earlier. Then he gets a bass... I blink, and he's replaced me in my band... Oh, I hate him.

I'm pretty sure it's the kids playing... (just open it on youtube proper, and you'll see other videos. If that doesn't convince you...)
Look, I know it's them, you know it's them, the whole world knows it's them but I'm in denial because they have a collective age that's younger than the cheese in my fridge and I'll never play like that if I make 100

what's the worst thing that's happened to you onstage?
leschirons replied to Funky Dunky's topic in General Discussion
A long long time ago we were supporting Black widow at Redbridge college. Our vocalist was so drunk and stoned that our mate who was roadie for the night actually stood behind him with arms around his chest and held him up to the mic. After 4 numbers, the SU organiser stopped our set and we had to do the walk of shame off stage with our gear. It's like a cold sweat Vietnam flash-back when I think about this even after more than 40 years. -
Five String Jazz Basses talk to me?! NOW A NBD THREAD !!!!!

Worth trying a Roscoe Beck V. Fabulous bass to play and a ton of options tone-wise. Never goes out of tune due to graphite rods in the neck. -
Yes...Mo Foster. Well done. Just been reading his credits, he sure did/does get around. http://www.mofoster.com/biog.php
Have you read 17watts? a great and entertaining insight into the birth of rock, and his career.

Then the only other I can think of that's certainly played for two of those is Mo Foster. Wrong again?
