1. Thomann are currently selling a Squier VM jazz for £234 (free delivery) One I was bidding on the other day (Ebay UK) for a French guitarist friend finished at £196 + delivery. So this is going to end up nearly the same price as brand new with no 3 year guarantee or 30 day refund option and, it had a few light dings on it I can see how the OP gets this impression although, the seller didn't set the price in this case, it was the buyers.
2.
Not to be confused with Martin Fry's Band however?
The same Martin Fry who's dad owned the chocolate factory?
3. As pointed out, an extension cab is not possible to add as nothing goes with the existing 6ohm load. I had one of these for 3 years and never struggled to get over a full heavy rock band (mic'd up drums, and two guitarists with BIG valve heads and 4 x 12s I could make the other three in the band beg for mercy. The 3x 10's in these really can kick out the low mids try boosting those.
4.
Depends on the band.... Not that we do pubs regularly anymore but we never had any issue getting a crowd and I think the most common song we had in our set list with any other band was half of long train running. It's all about your audience engagement
Very true. Years ago, we had a gig in a little Essex bar, known for the usual Mustang Sally / Alright now stuff. We were warned that the place would be empty when the club opposite opened at 10pm. We gave them, Room 335, Sylvia (Focus) Peg, Black Friday, You might need somebody and even Manhattan. No-one was more surprised than the owner when we still had them all there at 11.30pm at closing time. It's not just a matter of playing well, it's also a matter of not under-estimating the taste of the audience. Give them some credit for music appreciation.
5. South African Freakbeat and 60s soul singer Sharon Tandy opened a chain of electrical component shops after her pop career came to a halt.
6.
Hello...!?
Sorry, was that me you're looking for?
7.
I can only agree with the bolded statement. Actually( and this is the truth) this thread is just a ruse by Ped to drive traffic onto the site and thus increase advertising revenue...or maybe not. Do you think 20,000 views by Christmas is unrealistic?
Ha ha, I think 20,000 is easily achievable. Especially if you have Thursday off work and get stuck in (smileys don't work on this iPad but it's the thought that counts)
8. Contrary to popular belief, famous bass-ace york5stringer does actually have other things going on in his life other than contributing to this thread
9. Comfortably numb.
10. My old one weighed in at 4.8 kilos. Sounds heavy but it's not when it's on. One of the most comfortable and well balanced basses I'd ever owned. They are the ultimate 5 string unless you want to spend double the money. Good luck with the sale.
11.
sh*t the bed and call me Julie!!!
Hi Julie, (whoops, must clear something up) Stunning looking bass Hamfist BTW. Won't be here long.
12.
So what was he talking...?!
Many say he was up there with the very best of 20th century romantic visionary poets however, having met him, I'm going with the pretentious bollocks angle.
13. Contrary to popular belief, when warbly voiced glam pop prince Marc Bolan said "My people were fair and had stars in their eyes, but now they're content to wear sky in their hair" He was not just talking pretentious bollocks

Sold!

Ooh that is cheap. Serious bargain.
15. Go for the covers band, they're up and running and if they already have gigs, they're organised. You know most of their set anyway. Jamming with mates is fine until one decides he can't really commit to a band. The originals thing might be fun but I doubt if that will get productive gig-wise within a year, and then it all ultimately depends on how good the songs are and how much control the writer wants to retain when you're playing them. On top of this, you haven't said whether the bands are in Norfolk, Normandy, or both
16.
Yes I know it's our fault, we should have double checked the fee and there is no excuse, but had they offered that we probably wouldn't have taken the gig
It seems that this is the answer then. Ask how much it is before saying yes. Then, by your own admission, you would not have taken the gig. No offence, but it seems the pubs come in for some real stick here. They are running a business and have no obligation to adhere to how we think they "should" be running their business. If Jim Beam say to the landlord that they will supply them at an 80% discount to get some exposure in the region, they'd be mad not to accept the deal. We wouldn't expect them to say no as it's not fair on Jack Daniels. Some pubs pay well, others not, so, just avoid the ones that don't pay well. If you still find that you want to accept lesser paid gigs as you're all bored at home on a Friday night, then it turns out that you do actually play for fun.
17.
But to offer a band £150 for a second visit is a bit rich, we got caught out as we assumed it was the same as our first rims which was £200.
The onus is on you (the band) to confirm money before the actual gig if you want to avoid any nasty surprises but I find it weird that after paying you £200 for a first gig, you'd think the offer of a second date meant that they'd previously been happy with your performance and their takings As for your original question, if you ask yourselves why you actually gig, your answer will tell you if you should bother or not. I have plenty of friends who will drive 50 kms to play 3 hours for nothing and others who won't take the covers of their rig for less than 250€ per man. They're all happy because they all play for different reasons.
18. Yes, he's a great player. Saw him loads in the late 80's with Gary Moore. Welcome to Basschat by the way.
19.
One from my teens - Naked by Reef. The simplest bass line imaginable behind a great guitar hook. I hear this song and it always pulls me right into that groove! Reef - Naked:
Ooh, that hits the spot
20. At first, I thought that they sound like they were more interested in fun and mates playing their favourite tunes rather than providing a show that could earn them any money. Then I thought, maybe they're just sh*t and "fun" is their excuse.
21. Cheeky "Oirish" 70's popster Gilbert O Sullivan once worked as a pirate in Cornwall.
22.
when Kansas split up ex members were heard to say " I guess......"
Correct. They were speaking to Steve Lukather and David Paitch at the time.
23. Probably nothing wrong with them at all or Thomann wouldn't sell them. However, I would suggest that as makers such as Peavey and Aria have always made basses and guitars since the year dot, would it not be better to buy a secondhand one of those? I seem to remember a Peavey Milestone on here for about £50 just recently.
24. Because her management told her that her posh upper class double surname may hinder her career, screechy pop princess Katherine Lady-Garden changed her name to Kate Bush.
25.
Hoist by my own petard, which was in fact Van/naV/Fourgonnette/ettennogrouF's working title for the "Contractual Obligation" album.
You are of course, again correct in your assertions regarding that album. However, I must point out that it was not released under his own name but under the pseudonym "Marmite Morrison" and I'm sure you are well aquainted with how the story of that came about involving a supermarket "own brand" item and a supposedly borrowed handbag makeup mirror. In my opinion, This may have been responsible for the much used "you either love him or hate him" view.
