Van Morrison actually got the idea for his stage name after seeing a well known supermarket delivery van in his rear view mirror. Marc Bolan was the only brother of the Nolan sisters and changed his name slightly so as not seek success on the back of their fame. U2's Bono decided on their name after a bass playing school friend turned up at A&E at Dublin General Hospital to have something removed from his bottom which he'd been carrying when he fell down the stairs.

Re bands boycotting poor venues that don't pay, it's never going to happen and the reason for that is in 50% of the previous posts. Lots of people like to play for fun. It's just a hobby for some people and why shouldn't it be? The question is, how good are the bands that do play for nothing? It's possible of course, but unlikely that they'll be exceptionally good and after the landlord has only served drinks to 15 people each night for a couple of months, he'll go back to paid bands that will fill a venue. I have a couple of mates in an Essex covers band that never fail to fill every venue to danger point. Of course they don't play for nothing, they know their worth but so do the landlords.

Well, looking at the replies so far (I wasn't familiar with two suggestions but have just listened to them) we're all sitting on the same bus at the moment. Every one of the choices makes you need to tap feet / hands / bob your head and just generally move and get into it. I had expected to come across a few that might make me ask "where's the groove in this?" as some folks may view things differently but, not yet so maybe groove is a universal thing that we all agree on after all.

Groove. Now there's a word that gets used a lot by bass players and drummers. So, what is the one song that really sums it up for you? I'm interested to find out if groove actually means different things to different people or whether we all agree on what it is but simply feel it in different music. Did an acoustic gig last night in a pizza restaurant. They'd decked the whole place out with cobwebs and the like and advertised it as a Halloween party. Quite a crowd in there with about 50% of them dressed up. It was good fun.

....in about every band I've ever been in (we thought we were so "ROCK" with the Frijid Pink version) Just came across this little gem by Five Finger Death Punch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7siqTsfoqA Despite my advancing years, I quite fancy having a go for the fun of it. This song is up there with the other unofficial French national anthems as it was covered by Johnny Hallyday and has been requested at about every gig I've ever played since moving here. Not sure about how this will go down with the local farming community but hopefully, the band may be up for it.
