The one song (Cover) that you would love to gig and why ?
leschirons replied to lojo's topic in General Discussion
Despite my current "laid back" age related tastes in music, I'd love to gig Last resort by Papa Roach. Loved it when it came out, I don't think I'd heard a commercial song with a more "right between the eyes" feel to it. It's a well constructed number, great hook and just the right length to grab the attention and then leave you wanting. -
Musician wanted ads - the kiss of death!
leschirons replied to JapanAxe's topic in General Discussion
I used to laugh at "World class lead guitarist wanted, ideally 14 -17 years old" I've stopped laughing now as there actually are some out there these days. If I look at the ads now, I find myself muttering an optimistic "oooh" when the ad reads, bass player for 60 + old farts pub rock band -
Do the big name acts make cock-ups like us mortals?
Thank god for that. I feel much better. I fluffed it recently at a gig and had to stop. Started on the wrong note and never recovered.
After seeing the Slash howler, I think I now need to publish an open apology to every guitarist I've ever played with as they've all tripped up on this one at some point and I've been ready to give them "the look" -
Do the big name acts make cock-ups like us mortals?

Ha, and it always appears to be the most well known number. The one I heard was a couple of years ago at Larry Carlton's gig at the end of the guitar festival. He'd hired some Euro musicians for the gigs over here and the drummer had a car crash at the end of Room 335. Red faces all round and quite a few dirty looks on stage, especially in front of what was probably a 99% audience of players. -

Blimey, some big names there. So they are all human. -
The last clanger I dropped at a gig was not just an odd bum note. Albeit on guitar, I've no excuse, I thought I could do something I was not capable of. There are gigs where I'm spot on all night and gigs where I'm not. I assume the majority on BC are not pro musicians so we all probably have gigs from time to time that don't go too well due to a mistake. However, when I pay a lot of money to go and see a "name", I have, only on one occasion heard an almighty cock-up on stage. You may say that that's why they are name acts but we all know that lots of success doesn't always require lots of talent. I know they are usually quality players with years of experience and I expect them to be perfect but I guess anybody can in theory, have an off night. Anybody here heard a massive cock-up from a serious pro band or artiste? I don't just mean a vocalist who can't quite hit a note but a real mistake as we understand it.

Rory was a fortnightly regular at the Marquee when I was a teenager. Lucky enough to have seen him over 20 times. His gigs were never a disappointment.

Well, went to last night's gig. If I'm honest, I had actually decided not to enjoy this due to the 1 hour 30 minute delay in starting due to technical problems with a "power supply" I know these things happen but according to reviews, this is the third time so someone needs a kick up the backside. In fairness, they offered a ticket refund which only a few did take up and had I been on my own, would have too. Musically, very interesting and strangely magnetic to someone who is not a die-hard fan. I felt, visually, it was a little "theatre for theatre's sake" in places. Re the band performance, front of house mix was terrible for the first 30 mins but can only assume that it was good in the monitors. They were superbly tight but I felt that the bass was really unbalanced in the mix. The eq didn't work out front. Huge B and E strings but anything above the 5th fret on the A,D and G strings was non existent. At times it felt like the bass and drums were on different stages and badly mixed afterwards. Very tight but somehow disjointed. Pros, aurally and visually exciting gig from a truely original artist and probably the last opportunity to see her Cons, it's a very middle class gig and therefore attracts those who want to cheer and whoop at every twitch of Kate's little finger and personally, I thought at least she'd want to finish with Mustang Sally for the encore but sadly, no.
They have got somebody waiting in the wings to fill in anyway, but they want to borrow my rig for three months.
Now that, is way funnier than my Tommy Cooper joke.

90% of the time I gig with a s/h £80 OLP 5. Had a bit of rewiring and shielding (total 25€) I don't even take my Custom Shop Jazz to gigs now as I don't break strings and don't need a back up. Don't care what's on the headstock. I love it. As someone already said, " if it's a player, it's a player"

Just gone three and just got back in. Here is the pic I actually took on arrival. Great gig. We went down well (apart from the car crash on one number near the end due to my vanity and believing I could transpose "Can't take my eyes off of you" down a tone and a half on the fly whilst actually playing it. Apparently I can't The grub and wine were seriously good and a great welcome from the owners.

Ras52, that got me thinking after I'd Googled the name of the place for a pic (Not been there before) as I've put it in the SatNav and it's only an hour away from me. Loire valley is much further. I'm all depressed now, this is the dump I'm actually playing at. What a let down. So yes Douglas, I am slumming it.

I'm playing here later tonight. Hopefully the wine & food will be on a par with the surroundings

There are quite a few sunday afternoon gigs over here (in the summer) and as that "Hendrix / Cream / Bonnamassa" thing is big here, the line up usually includes a band that plays it. My experience of this in the UK though was that if we wanted live music at a lunchtime or afternoon gig, and it wasn't a big special event like a car or bike show, it would invariably be jazz in some pub or club. That seems to be a more suitable genre for that period of the day. I've played a few here over the last 10 years and the only problem has been getting the audiences in as people either want a sunday slobbing around or tidying up the garden.

Great thread idea. However, I must say that the funniest three phrases I've ever seen together are these The answer was, (you'll all be kicking yourself now) "Ótta" by Sólstafir.

Bought an amp head from Alex, really easy to deal with and a nice guy to boot. Very accommodating as he met up with my daughter for the delivery. Thanks again for a great deal.

Just met Phil in a dodgy MacDonalds car park to buy his Status 6 string. Really nice guy, easy to deal with and very accommodating. Buy from / sell to, with confidence. Thanks again Phil.

Aria Pro 2 I had one of these for about 3 years as a spare 6er and for outdoor gigs. Can't praise them enough. Really cheap, 34" scale, reliable passive electronics and a really lovely easy to play neck and, they sound lovely. Very light too, about the same weight as my 4 string jazz. Ended up using it most of the time due to the weight compared to my Spector 6. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141368544924?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Here's one on Ebay at the mo.
(Moderators - If I have posted into the wrong section of the forum, please point me to the correct part....) I am principally a guitar player - fingerstyle folk mainly - but have also acquired a range of other stringed instruments, and can bash a few chords out of them. My daughter has now gifted to me her bass guitar - a Crafter Cruizer 4 string with a small Peavey practice amp. I am gradually getting my head around a few scales, and would ultimately like to use the bass to accompany a few songs in the ukulele club that I belong to. Nothing fancy at all, just a steady beat or shuffle to give a bit of tonal variety to our performances. Two questions, please: 1) In general terms, what are the advantages/disadvantages of light guage strings to heavy guage ones? As a total newbie, it seems to me that light guage strings would be easier to play, but will they spoil the sound? (I guess the strings on the guitar are old, and I have no idea what guage, so I have decided to change them, but just need to decide what might the most appropriate guage for a beginner who just wants to play undemanding lines). 2) The 1st string (G) is way louder through the amp than the other strings, and I can't seem to rein it in despite lots of tweaking of the amp controls and the pickup controls. Is this something I will just have to live with, or does it need proper intervention by a luthier or an electrician? In which case I will have to just live with it, cos I don't want to throw money at this project, other than some strings! Thanks in anticipation of any input from the forum. Paul
Hi, and welcome. No doubt others will reply too but my thoughts are, if you go for a fairly standard 40 - 100 set (assuming it's a 4 string bass) you won't go far wrong and they'll be easy to play and give a nice feel to the bass however, it really all depends on what is most suitable for you personally. Re the louder G string, it could be something simple like a bit of severe pickup height adjustment required. It's unlikely that the rest of the pickup governing the other 3 strings will be faulty. I guess the first thing to try would be regulating the EQ on the amp to compensate (take off some of the hi mids and treble and boost the lo mids and bass a little) that may at least get your G string a little more in the background. If none of the above, a pro opinion may be required so hopefully someone else will be along with more suggestions. Also, if the strings are very old but maybe someone has changed the G recently, it will obviously sound a lot brighter than the rest. Good luck on you bass journey.

Depends what you're into. If it's jazz, they have some great little acts on here (link attached) A bit like Ronnie's really. Gregory Privat is there at the moment. Great pianist + upright and drums. http://www.sunset-sunside.com/
