Bought an amp head from Alex, really easy to deal with and a nice guy to boot. Very accommodating as he met up with my daughter for the delivery. Thanks again for a great deal.

Just met Phil in a dodgy MacDonalds car park to buy his Status 6 string. Really nice guy, easy to deal with and very accommodating. Buy from / sell to, with confidence. Thanks again Phil.

Aria Pro 2 I had one of these for about 3 years as a spare 6er and for outdoor gigs. Can't praise them enough. Really cheap, 34" scale, reliable passive electronics and a really lovely easy to play neck and, they sound lovely. Very light too, about the same weight as my 4 string jazz. Ended up using it most of the time due to the weight compared to my Spector 6. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141368544924?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Here's one on Ebay at the mo.
(Moderators - If I have posted into the wrong section of the forum, please point me to the correct part....) I am principally a guitar player - fingerstyle folk mainly - but have also acquired a range of other stringed instruments, and can bash a few chords out of them. My daughter has now gifted to me her bass guitar - a Crafter Cruizer 4 string with a small Peavey practice amp. I am gradually getting my head around a few scales, and would ultimately like to use the bass to accompany a few songs in the ukulele club that I belong to. Nothing fancy at all, just a steady beat or shuffle to give a bit of tonal variety to our performances. Two questions, please: 1) In general terms, what are the advantages/disadvantages of light guage strings to heavy guage ones? As a total newbie, it seems to me that light guage strings would be easier to play, but will they spoil the sound? (I guess the strings on the guitar are old, and I have no idea what guage, so I have decided to change them, but just need to decide what might the most appropriate guage for a beginner who just wants to play undemanding lines). 2) The 1st string (G) is way louder through the amp than the other strings, and I can't seem to rein it in despite lots of tweaking of the amp controls and the pickup controls. Is this something I will just have to live with, or does it need proper intervention by a luthier or an electrician? In which case I will have to just live with it, cos I don't want to throw money at this project, other than some strings! Thanks in anticipation of any input from the forum. Paul
Hi, and welcome. No doubt others will reply too but my thoughts are, if you go for a fairly standard 40 - 100 set (assuming it's a 4 string bass) you won't go far wrong and they'll be easy to play and give a nice feel to the bass however, it really all depends on what is most suitable for you personally. Re the louder G string, it could be something simple like a bit of severe pickup height adjustment required. It's unlikely that the rest of the pickup governing the other 3 strings will be faulty. I guess the first thing to try would be regulating the EQ on the amp to compensate (take off some of the hi mids and treble and boost the lo mids and bass a little) that may at least get your G string a little more in the background. If none of the above, a pro opinion may be required so hopefully someone else will be along with more suggestions. Also, if the strings are very old but maybe someone has changed the G recently, it will obviously sound a lot brighter than the rest. Good luck on you bass journey.

Depends what you're into. If it's jazz, they have some great little acts on here (link attached) A bit like Ronnie's really. Gregory Privat is there at the moment. Great pianist + upright and drums. http://www.sunset-sunside.com/

He is also selling his "Dave Murray / Paul Kossoff" guitar.
Anyone know what she actually looks like when she's NOT appearing to have her mouth hanging out of a Euro-star window at full pelt?
I've just Googled her name and managed to find the few pictures that don't include the weird "surprised cod" expressions. Apart from the Wikipedia entry, most threads are the subject of the "faces" This leads me to believe that she's more famous for those than for bass playing. As to her being "super hot" ? Hmm. I guess you'd have to make a judgement if you just saw her in the street without a bass, not knowing who she was.

Aged 11. First violin in School orchestra Aged 15, brother starts band (3 guitarists and no bass or drums) One changes to bass and I bang biscuit tins as drums. Brother buys me 2nd hand kit (John Grey) Buy Premier kit and we're away after two years rehearsals. Now a 3 piece. Psychedelic rock. I audition for T.Rex and get a second try out but job obviously eventually goes to Billie Legend. Pinnacle of drumming career, East of Eden stand in on a gig and Genesis support slot. Get married and buy catalogue guitar (Kimbara Strat) Buy more real guitars and join band (with bro again) as guitarist. Get call from old workmate about joining band. Get to first rehearsal with Strat and amp to find he meant as bassplayer. Borrow Hohner cricket bat, borrow Peavey combo 300, and love it. Buy loads of expensive exotic gear only to eventually realise I sounded exactly the same with the borrowed cricket bat and keyboard amp. By now, about 1500 gigs under the belt. Still playing drums too and lessons from Russ Gilbrook. Moved to France in 2004 have played about 350 gigs since then. 70% bass 20% guitar, 10% drums.
Thanks, but I only photograph a little younger than my chronological age. Face to face I look all of 61, no big deal. However, it brings up another part of discussing "The Aging Local Rock Musician" I don't go out of my way to look old where I see a lot cats my age do. I don't try and dress like a 20 year old but I also don't try and think too much about what a 61 year old should wear or look like. Blue
I agree. I don't think about what a 61 year old wears either but to try and look like a young Billy Idol when you're 35 years too old for it can look ridiculous. A few years back, I saw a couple of ex big name rock guitarists playing to backing tracks in a pub. Probably for about £150 between them knowing the pub. They were serious players and would have been just as appreciated had they not been trying to recapture the days of their youth with clothes that were 16 sizes too small for their physiques. I try to make an effort on stage dress-wise but it needs to be comfortable. That's really what I meant.
I spent the weekend trying to find a dep for a Jazz gig (double bass) I cannot do at relatively short notice (family issue). I had to ring 9 guys before I found one who could do it. THen it dawned on me. I am everyone's 9th call guy and they were all busy because they had been called before me and I had been the 9th guy called for the gig I had!! Bugger!
Sit down, take a deep breath, pour yourself a stiff drink and tell yourself that they were all playing with their regular bands and you, are still the No1 dep call

I have this weird vision where some day there will be old folks homes where 85 and 90 year olds will sit around and reminisce about the good old days with Cradle of filth, Megadeath and Snoop dog -
Very cool, I'm not sure our 29 year old female front and lead guitarist is interested in learning anything from my experience. I'm certainly open to what I can learn from the younger generations Blue
First off, if that's you in the picture (and not your son ) You look 10 years younger than your age. I'm 62, will be gigging next Friday, Saturday and Sunday and will have done 5 gigs and two rehearsals in 9 days. I'm not saying I won't be tired but it definitely will be fun. I don't do this for the money although that is nice, so fun is the only excuse I need. I'm the baldest and oldest in the band but luckily, the most talented by far well that's what I tell them anyway. The only change that my age has brought (apart from aches and pains) is that I don't attempt to lever myself into black stretch jeans and tight T-shirts any more. I try and dress a little more befitting my age these days. Other than that, nothing has changed. You're a long time dead my friend so enjoy it for as long as you can.
Try 'La Mer' by Charles Trenet on 'em, Les.
We did it, I just forgot to put it on the list She sings the French version too and not the Beyond the sea version. Went down well. We also threw in Sway (a la Dean Martin) Admittedly Never can say goodbye is the odd one out but at the moment it's my all time fave feel-good number. The band had doubts but it's a winner.

You lot would have to tell me how they tend to go down in the UK when you throw the odd one in. Here in central France, it was a real surprise how well they were received. I'm not sure how much of what we call "standards got here in the 60's so I don't really know if they applauded because they were accessible quality tunes or if it was due to recognition. I've played with quite a few very good French musicians who have actually asked me who Sinatra, Carole King and Billie Holiday were. Maybe they were just too wrapped up with Jonny Halliday and Serge Gainsbourg at the time although they are more familiar with the old rock'n'roll numbers as mentioned in the last couple of replies.
